I asked Jackie a lot of questions. I asked if she became close to her patients. She said, “Some I do, especially if I have become their close friends and they tell me things they wouldn’t tell anyone else. I’ve found it harder for the patient’s family to accept what’s happening. In most cases, the dying person has accepted the truth.”
I asked her how she could do this work for so long. She said, “I have taken care of 3,000people over 37years. I consider dying to be a very important part of life. I feel good because I can make these people’s journey easier.”
Jackie was the mother I have never had. My own mother, Helen, was taken away from me right after I was born. I never knew her. And I had a strange relationship with my father. He was a Sunday father. Since my sister and I lived in foster homes, he came to visit only on Sundays.
But at the hospice(临终安养院), nurse Jackie gave me hope, love and encouragement. She listened to all my stories, and I listened to hers. It was a comfort. The nurses had told my family that death was coming near. As time went on, I became the star patient at the hospice, because I didn’t go according to plans. My kidneys started working again and could function without dialysis(透析). It was a mystery to my doctors. My friends said It was a miracle. But I knew what actually cured me.
The employees showed me off to other patients and being the ham I was, I enjoyed.

Once an Englishman named Jack Brown went to Russia for a holiday. He stayed there for several months and then came home again. Some of his friends visited him a few days after he got back. “I had a very dangerous trip while I was in Russia.” Jack said to them. “I wanted to see a friend of mine in the country and the bad weather made me very late. So I was still travelling through a forest in sleigh<雪橇>when the sun went down. It was a long way from my friend’s house when about 20 wolves began to follow my sleigh. It was very dark in the forest. There was thick snow on the ground. It was cold, and there were no houses for miles and miles. First I heard the wolves, and the noise was terrible! The horses heard them, too. They were frightened and began running faster. Then I saw long, grey forms among the trees, and soon the wolves were near us. They were running very fast, and they didn’t seem to get tired like the horses.” “What did you do?” one of his friends asked. “When the wolves got very near,” Jack answered, “I put up my gun and shot the first wolf. The sleigh was moving about, but I hit the animal and killed it. Then all the other wolves stopped and ate it, so our sleigh got away from them for a few minutes.” “Then they finished their meal, and I heard them coming again. The moon was shining brightly on the snow, and after a few minutes I saw them among the trees once more. They came nearer again, and then I shot another of them, and the others stopped once more to eat it.” “The same thing happened again and again, and my horses became more and more tired and ran slower and slower until, after about two hours, only one wolf was still alive and following us.”

It must have been around nine o’clock when I drove back home from work because it was already dark. As I came near to the gates I turned off the head lights of the car so as to prevent the beam from swinging (摆动) through the window and waking Jack, who shared the house with me. But I needn’t have done so. I noticed that his light was still on, so he was awake anyway—unless he had fallen asleep while reading. I put the car away and went up the steps.
Then I opened the door quietly and went to Jack’s room. He was in bed awake, but he didn’t even turn towards me.
“What’s up, Jack﹖” I asked.
“For God’s sake, don’t make a noise,” he said.
The way he spoke reminded me of someone in pain who is afraid to talk in case he does himself serious injury.
“Take your shoes off, Neville,” Jack said.
I thought that he must be ill and that I had better give way to him to keep him happy. “There is a snake here,” he explained. “It’s asleep between the sheets. I was lying on my back reading when I saw it.I knew that moving was out of the question. I could not have moved even I’d wanted to.” I realized that he was serious. “I was depending on you to call a doctor as soon as you came home,” Jack went on. “It has not bitten me yet but I dare not do anything to upset it. It might wake up. I’m sick of this,” he said.“I took it for granted that you would have come home an hour ago.”
There was no time to argue or apologize for being late.I looked at him as encouraging as I could and went to telephone the doctor.

I still clearly remember that day. I was on the side of the road for close to four hours with my big Jeep. I put signs in the windows that said, “NEED A JACK(千斤顶)”.
Right as I was about to give up, a truck stopped and a man got off. He sized up the situation and went back to take a jack. After about two hours, we finished the job with sweats. We were both dirty. His wife produced a large water jug for us to wash our hands in.
I tried to put $20 in the man’s hand, but he wouldn’t take it, so instead I went up and gave it to his wife as quietly as I could. I thanked them up one side and down the other. I asked the little girl, their daughter, where they lived, thinking maybe I’d send them a gift. She said they lived in Mexico. They were in Oregon now so Mommy and Daddy could pick cherries for the next few weeks. After that, they were going to pick peaches, and then go back home.
After I said my goodbyes and started walking back to the Jeep, the girl called out and asked if I’d had lunch. When I told her no, she ran up and handed me a tamale(玉米粽子). I thanked them again and walked back to my car. When I opened the tamale, what did I find inside? My $20 bill! I ran to the van and the guy rolled down his window. He saw the $20 in my hand, started shaking his head smiling, and with what looked like great concentration said in English: “Today you, tomorrow me.” Then he rolled up his window and drove away, with his daughter waving to me from the back.
This family, working on a seasonal basis where time is money, took a couple of hours to help a stranger while others passed by quietly.
Since then I’ve helped many people like the Mexican family. I didn’t accept money. But every time I was able to help, I felt as if I was putting something in the bank.
