             Are you afraid of sharks? You shouldn’t be! Below we cleared up the main myths about one of the world’s most perfectly formed creatures …

             All sharks are the same.

             This is absolutely not true. There are nearly four hundred species of sharks and they vary widely in habitat, size, features, diet and lifestyle. They range from the cigar shark, which is about 15 centimetres long, to the whale shark, which can be up to about nine meters long. More than 50 percent of sharks are less than a metre long and more than 90 percent are less than two metres long. And their habitat ranges from shallow to deep water and from the Arctic to the Tropic.

             This is not true, either. In fact, many shark populations are decreasing. The chief reason for this is that hundreds of thousands of them are caught in fishing nets. Depending on where they are caught. They are either killed for their fins(鳍), which are used in shark’s fin soup, or they are tossed back into the sea because they are unwanted. Almost all sharks which are discarded in this way die. Also, sharks mature late in life and produce very few young. If the current reduction in numbers continues, the ecological balance of the oceans will be severely threatened.

             Sharks will always attack you

             This is nonsense. The chances of being attacked by a shark are minimal. You are 250 times more likely to be killed by lightning than by a shark, and your chances of being killed by lightning are practically zero.

             However, if you are planning to take a swim in shark territory, then follow these simple rules:

             Avoid swimming at dawn or duck when visibility decreases.

             Avoid areas where there are breaking waves. Turbulent(汹涌的) water makes it difficult for sharks to see and determine whether you are prey(猎物).

             Do not wear jewellery in the water. Sharks are attracted to shiny fishes, and jewellery may resemble their scales(鳞片).

             Do not swim near schools of small fish, which are the favorite food of some sharks.

    　　C．With elevations ranging from 8，000 feet in the wet，grassy valleys to 14，259 feet at the weather-ravaged top of Long's Peak，a visitor to the park has opportunities for countless breathtaking experiences and adventures．A large variety of animals will delight wildlife-watchers of all ages．Wildflower-lovers are never disappointed in June and July when the meadows and hillsides are splashed with botanical color．359 miles of trail offer endless opportunities to hikers，backpackers and horseback riders．So far to find 60 peaks rising above 12，000 feet challenge intrepid hikers and climbers．

    　　D．The world's largest concentration of natural stone arches is found in this park．Over 1500 of these“miracles of nature”grace the 73，000-acre area．And it is famous for the red arches of Entrada sandstone that occur there in great profusion．A 41-mile round-trip paved road in the park leads to the major sights， including Balanced Rock，Skyline Arch，and the Fiery Furnace．But there are also many other striking rock formations scattered over the park's 73，000 scenic acres．

    　　E．Yellowstone is the oldest park in the U．S．park system and is its flagship．Visitors come to experience the park's restless geology；to see grizzlies，gray wolves，and herds of buffalo．Its turbulent（狂暴的）landscape-which remains among the most geologically active lands on the planet，with steam-spewing geysers（间歇温泉），gurgling fumaroles，and frequent earthquakes-was protected as the world's first national park in 1872．Yellowstone and the huge tracts of national-forest land that ring it comprise one of the world's last intact temperate ecosystems-all its major species of plants and animals are still present．

    highest pillars in the great cities of the world you will find the figure of a conqueror or a general.
         1. It is just possible they are, but they are not the most civilized. Animals fight? so do savages? hence to
    be good at fighting is to be good in the way in which an animal or a savage is good, but it is not to be civilized.
         2. People fight to settle quarrels. Fighting means killing, and civilized peoples ought to be able to find some
    way of settling their disputes other than by seeing which side can kill off the greater number of the other side,
    and then saying that that side which has killed most has won.
         3. That is what the story of mankind has on the whole been like. Even our own age has fought the two
    greatest wars in history, in which millions of people were killed. And while today it is true that people do not
    fight and kill each other in the streets, nations and countries have not learnt to do this yet, and still behave like
    savages. But we must not expect too much. After all, the race of men has only just started. From the point of
    view of evolution, human beings are very young children indeed, babies, in fact, of a few months old.
         4. These figures are difficult to grasp? so let us scale them down. Suppose that we reckon the whole past
    of living creatures on the earth as one hundred years? then the whole past of man works out at about one
    month, and during that month there have been civilizations for between seven and eight hours.
         5. Taking man' civilized past at about seven or eight hours, we may estimate his future at about one hundred
    thousand years. Thus mankind is only at the beginning of its civilized life, and as I say, we must not expect
    too much. The past of 8 man has been on the whole a pretty beastly business, a business of fighting and killing.
    We must not expect even civilized peoples not to have done these things. All we can ask is that they will
    sometimes have done something else.
         [A] Even being good at getting other people to fight for you and telling them how to do it most efficiently-
    this, after all, is what conquerors and generals have done-is not being civilized.
         [B] And I think most people believe that the greatest countries are those that have beaten in battle the
    greatest number of other countries and ruled over them as conquerors.
         [C] We have got to the stage of keeping the rules and behaving properly in daily life. However, every year
    conflicts between countries and nations are still claiming thousands of lives.
         [D] And not only has won, but, because it has won, has been in the right. For that is what going to war
    means? it means saying that might is right.
         [E] So you see there has been little time to learn in, but there will be oceans of time in which to learn better.
         [F] Scientists reckon that there has been life of some sort on the earth in the form of jellyfish and that kind
    of creature for about twelve hundred million years? but there have been men for only one million years, and
    there have been civilized men for about eight thousand years at the outside.
