    　　To the west and off the European Continent, there are thousands of islands on the continental shelf(大陆架)．They are generally called the British Isles．Of all these isles, the largest one is called Great Britain．For convenience’s sake, it is often shortened to Britain．Still further the west of Great Britain is the second largest island known as Ireland．The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland(U．K．)is made up of Great Britain, Northern Ireland, and a number of smaller islands around them．The total area of the country is some 240 000 square kilometers with a population of about 57 million．

    　　Great Britain runs nearly 1000 kilometers from south to north and extends, at the widest part, about 500 kilometers from west to east．Its area is some 230 000 square kilometers．Great Britain is traditionally divided into three parts, or countries：England in the south, Scotland in the north, and Wales in the southwest．There are discernible(可辨别的)differences between them even now．

    　　England is the largest and most developed of all the three．Its area, about 130 000 square kilometers, takes up nearly 60％ of the whole island．Its population is more than 46 million which makes up 85％ of the country’s whole population．The importance of England is so great in Britain that some foreigners just say “England” when they mean Britain．The same is true of the custom of speaking of the British people as the English who are the majority in the United Kingdom．

    　　Scotland is the second largest both in area and population．It has an area of about 78 760 square kilometers, less than 30％ of the whole island and with a population of 5 million, less than one tenth of the whole population．

    　　Wales is the smallest of the three both in area and population．In area,20 700 square kilometers, it makes up less than 9％ of the total area while its population, 2.7 million, does not exceed 5％ of the whole．

    NASA is moving ahead with plans to put a long-armed lander on Mars’ icy north pole to search for clues① for water and possible signs of life.

    The $386 million Phoenix Mars is planned to touch down in the Martian arctic in 2008. The stationary probe will use its robotic arm to dig into the icy land and pick up soil samples② to analyze. In 2002, the Mars Odyssey orbiter spotted evidence of ice-rich soil near the arctic surface.

    Scientists hope the Phoenix mission will find clues to the geologic history of water on the Red Planet and determine whether microbes③ existed in the ice.

    Phoenix will be the first mission of the Mars Scout program, a renewed, low-cost effort to study the Red Planet. “The Phoenix mission explores new territory in the northern plains of Mars analogous to the permafrost regions on Earth,” Peter Smith said.

    True to its name, Phoenix rose from the ashes of previous④ missions. The lander for Phoenix was built to fly as part of the 2001 Mars Surveyor program. But the program broke down after the well-known disappearance of the Mars Polar Lander in 1999. The Polar Lander lost contact during a landing attempt near the planet’s south pole after its rocket engine shut off prematurely, causing the spacecraft to fall about 130 feet to almost certain destruction.

    The Phoenix probe had been in storage at a Lockheed Martin clean room in Denver before it was reused for its present mission. It will carry science instruments that were designed for the Mars Surveyor program including an improved panoramic camera and a trench-digging robotic arm. Phoenix will lift off from the Kennedy Space Center in August 2007 and land on the planet nine months later.

    Howard Dill is a giant among giant pumpkin(南瓜) growers. He grew world champion pumpkins for four years running，from 1979 to 1982, and missed winning the fifth year by only 5 pounds. Today, his Dill Atlantic Giant seeds are sold worldwide to more than 50 seed companies. The pumpkins grown from his Dill Atlantic Giant seeds commonly weigh in at over 1,000 pounds. “I don’t have any training in genetics(遗传学); it was all trial and error,” Dill says. He got his love of pumpkins from his father and has enjoyed growing them for years.

    Dill still grows giant pumpkins, but not for competition. In the fall, visitors come to enjoy the pumpkins on his 90-acre farm in Nova Scotia, Canada. He plants ten acres of pumpkins for Halloween and two acres of giant pumpkins. One of giant pumpkins was recently baked into 442 pumpkin pies and sold at $5 each for charity.

    It you want to try growing a giant pumpkin, Dill recommends starting with a soil test and then adding fertilizer(农药) as needed. Plant the giant pumpkin seed. A giant pumpkin can gain 15 to 20 pounds a day, so careful watering—every day or two—is necessary. You should wait about 130 days until the pumpkin matures and then you can harvest it.

    Dill’s favorite pumpkin set the Guinness Book record in 1981. It weighted 493.5 pounds. “I’ve grown them larger since, but that one meant a lot,” he remembers. “I never would have imagined ten

    years ago that there would be a 1,000-pounder, but there are many of them now,” says Dill. The 2006 world record holder is Larry Checkon of Pennsylvania. He grew a 1,469 pounder. Dill says, “These world champions are grown from my seeds, so I feel like a winner right along with them.”
