【题目】阅读理解
It might be something that you miss unless it's pointed out to you. Next time you go to a public bathroom, take a look before you sit down on the toilet seat. You won't see a circle shape, but something designed not connected in the front part: a U.
This is an open-front toilet seat, and thanks to the American Standard National Plumbing (水管装置) Technology, it's the go-to for most public restrooms. This technology was created in 1955 and further developed by the Uniform Plumbing Technology in 1973, according to Mental Floss.
As to the plumbing rules which fit water seats, the first two requirements are as follows:
Toilet seats shall be of smooth, non-absorbed material.
All Toilet seats, except those within apartment units, shall be either of the open front type or have an automatic seat cover.
This part of the rules also clears up why you won't meet fur toilet seats in truck stop bathrooms. The reason for both of these rules comes down to health. With an open front, there's less surface area that can make incidental touch with your private regions. But what about the toilet seat covers you can use? Unfortunately, those don't offer as much protection against bacteria as you think they do.
They were also designed with women in mind, according to Lynne Simick, the senior vice president of technology development at IAPMO. The open front of the seat is fairly good for women.
Now that you know why the public toilet seat is shaped the way it is, learn which one is the cleanest you can use.
(1)What do we know about the toilet seat from the first paragraph?
A.It's round.
B.It's expensive.
C.It's complex.
D.It's specialized.
(2)What is the advantage to use the toilet seat with an open front?
A.It has an automatic seat cover.
B.It is made from non-absorbed material.
C.It is very comfortable to sit on.
D.It can protect you from bacteria.
(3)Which of the following is the best choice according to the text?
A.
B.
C.
D.
(4)What does the text mainly talk about?
A.How U-shaped toilet seats came into being.
B.Why public toilet seats are shaped like a U.
C.What materials are used in public toilet seats.
D.Where U-shaped toilet seats are used.

【答案】
(1)D
(2)D
(3)A
(4)B
【解析】本文是一篇说明文,介绍为何马桶座圈是U型的。从文章可知使用这种开放式马桶座圈的好处是它能保护你免受细菌感染。
(1)考查推理判断。根据第一段中的“Next time you go to a public bathroom, take a look before you sit down on the toilet seat. You won't see a circle shape, but something designed not connected in the front part: a U.”可知它被专业化。故选D。
(2)考查推理判断。根据第四段中的“ With an open front, there's less surface area that can make incidental touch with your private regions. But what about the toilet seat covers you can use? Unfortunately, those don't offer as much protection against bacteria as you think they do.”可知使用开放式马桶座圈的好处是它能保护你免受细菌感染。故选D。
(3)考查推理判断。根据“As to the plumbing rules which fit water seats, the first two requirements are as follows: Toilet seats shall be of smooth, non-absorbed material. All Toilet seats, except those within apartment units, shall be either of the open front type or have an automatic seat cover.”对U型马桶的介绍,A图应该是最好的选择。
(4)考查主旨大意。根据第一段中的“You won't see a circle shape, but something designed not connected in the front part: a U.”和最后一段中的“Now that you know why the public toilet seat is shaped the way it is, learn which one is the cleanest you can use.”可知本文介绍为何马桶座圈是U型的。故选B。

Good news for giant panda lovers: The cute and cuddly creature has just been brought back from the brink of extinction.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) downgraded the species from “endangered” to “vulnerable” as the union released its updated Red List on Sept 4 at Hawaii.

The downgrade came after IUCN data suggested that there were 1,864 giant pandas in the wild in China in 2014 their population has grown by 17 percent in the decade leading up to 2014.

Chinese conservation efforts, including forest protection and reforestation, are considered to be the driving force behind the animal’s resurgence.

“It’s all about restoring the habitats,” Craig Hilton-Taylor, head of the IUCN Red List, told the BBC.

The number of panda reserves in China has also jumped to 67, from 13 in 1992. Nearly two-thirds of all wild pandas live in these reserves, according to the World Wildlife Fund.

“Just by restoring the panda’s habitat, that’s given them back their space and made food available to them,” Hilton-Taylor said.

A loss of habitats, on the contrary, was what caused the number of pandas to drop to just over 1,200 in the 1980s, Hilton-Taylor added.

Apart from giant pandas, the Tibetan Antelope has also moved from “endangered” to “near threatened”. According to a statement from IUCN, the animal’s numbers dwindled severely dropping from around 1 million to an estimated 65,000-72,500 in the 1980s and early 1990s due to commercial poaching. Rigorous(严格的) protection has since been enforced to protect the beasts and the population is now likely to be between 100,000 and 150,000.

Despite the improved statuses, wild animals like the giant panda and the Tibetan Antelope still face great challenges. The IUCN warned, for example, that ongoing threats from climate change could eliminate more than 35 percent of the panda’s bamboo habitat in the next 80 years, which would reverse the species recent gains.

The first ancient Olympic Games for which we still have written records were held in 776 BC. Coroebus won the only event at the Olympics. This made him the very first Olympic champion in history. Then they grew and continued to be played every four years. In 393 AD, the Roman emperor Theodosius , a Christian, announced to end the Games because of their pagan (异教的) influences.

About 1,500 years later, a young Frenchman named Pierre de Coubertin began their revival (恢复). In 1892 Coubertin first brought forward his idea to revive the Olympic Games but failed.

Two years later, Coubertin organized a meeting with 79 delegates (代表) who represented nine countries. At this meeting he got what he wanted. All the delegates at the conference voted for the Olympic Games. They also decided to have Coubertin set up an international committee to organize the Games. This committee became the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Demetrious Vikelas from Greece was selected to be its first president. Athens was chosen for the revival of the Olympic Games and the planning was begun.

The very first modern Olympic Games opened in the first week of April, 1896. Since the Greek government had been unable to afford a stadium, a rich Greek architect, Georgios Averoff, donated one million drachmas (over $100,000) to repair the Panathenaic Stadium, originally built in 330 BC.
