Because there can be fortunate accidents, like bumping into an old friend you haven’t seen for years and whose address you’ve lost. 【4】.

由上文“We tend to use the same old words over and over again, to limit our powers of expression by limiting our vocabulary.”“我们往往一遍又一遍地使用同一个老词,限制了我们的词汇量,同时限制了我们的表达能力。”结合下文“but why not enhance your speech and writing by learning to use new ones from time to time ds alternatives?”
由下文“Or why not occasionally describe a situation as aggravated(恶化)instead of worsened.”
由上文“I don’t mean that you should throw away the Mold words.” 故选A。
由下文“Try to make these words your own, as companions or friendly rivals of the ones you have owned in the past. Let them compete, and make your language all the richer.”

If you wear glasses, chances are you are smarter. Research published in the famous British journal Nature Communications has found that people who displayed higher levels of intelligence were almost 30 percent more likely to wear glasses.
The scientists studied the genes of thousands of people between the ages of 16 and 102.The study showed intelligence can be connected to physical characteristics. One characteristic was eyesight. In out of 10 people who were more intelligent, there was a higher chance they needed glasses. Scientists also said being smarter has better benefits. It is connected to better health.
It is important to remember these are connections which are not proven causes. Scientists call this correlation. Just because something is connected to something else does not mean one of those things caused the other. And it's worth noting that what constitutes intelligence is subjective and can be difficult, if not impossible, to measure.
Forget genes though. Plenty of proof shows wearing glasses makes people think you are more intelligent, even if you do not need glasses. A number of studies have found people who wear glasses are seen as smarter, hard working and honest. Many lawyers use this idea to help win their cases. Lawyer Harvey Slovis explained this. Glasses soften their appearance, he said. Sometimes there has been a huge amount of proof showing that people he was defending broke the law. He had them wear glasses and they weren't found guilty.
Glasses are also used to show someone is intelligent in movies and on TV. Ideas about people who wear glasses have begun to shift. People who do not need glasses sometimes wear them for fashion only. They want to look worldly or cool. But not everyone is impressed by this idea, though. GQ magazine said people who wear glasses for fashion are trying too hard to look smart and hip(时髦的). However, that hasn’t stopped many celebrities from happily wearing glasses even if they do not need them. Justin Bieber is just one high-profile fan of fashion glasses.
【1】What does the new study show?
A. People wearing glasses are smarter.
B. People wearing glasses are healthier.
C. Wearing glasses can make people cleverer.
D. Wearing glasses is associated with higher IQ.
【2】What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. ShiftB. Link
C. ProofD. Consequence
【3】Why do some lawyers ask Their clients to wear glasses in court?
A. Because it can create a moral image.

The minute Joe Serna walked into the Veterans Treatment Court, he could feel his shoulders tense up. He had come to turn himself in (自首).
Six months earlier, Serna had been arrested for driving after drinking and was required to report to Judge Lou Olivera’s court every two weeks to take a test and prove he hadn’t been drinking. Serna had passed every biweekly screening—until the week before. Positive. He decided to try to bluff his way out of trouble. “I never had a drink, Judge,” he told the court.
^Both Joe Serna and Judge Olivera were old soldiers, and Olivera had come to know and admire Serna as he participated in the court’s program to help old soldiers with drinking and addiction problems. And that was what had brought Serna back to Olivera’s court a week after his lie. “This guy is a fellow soldier,” he told himself. “I need to make this right.” So Serna stood before Olivera and admitted, “I lied, Judge. I was drinking.”
After countless combats and the memories of many “best buddies” losing their lives, 39-year-old Joe Serna left the army in 2013 with 18 years of service. But in truth, the terrible memories had never left him and would reappear in nightmares. And that’s the reason for his drinking. To this day, being stuck in a closed space can cause flashbacks (突然重现) for Serna.
On the day when Serna admitted he had lied about drinking, the judge was moved and decided on the punishment: one night in jail.
The next night, Joe Serna was in a small cell and felt he would soon be flashing back to a terrible war. Then the door opened, and Judge Olivera came in. Serna was confused. But a few minutes later, he understood the judge had decided to spend the night with him. The two talked for hours about their service, their families, and their hopes for the future. At around one in the morning, Serna fell asleep. “He will be OK now,” the judge said to himself as he rolled up his shirt into a makeshift pillow.
【1】Which can best replace the underlined words in the second paragraph?
A. explain without being disturbed B. get away with his wrong-doing
C. give the court a little trouble D. give up drinking in future
【2】What made Serna decide to turn himself in?
A. His sickness in his shoulders. B. His admiration for Olivera.

A. He didn’t admit his fault and thus got punished.
