A group of kids at McIntyre Elementary School, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, have created a special bench to make sure their fellow classmates aren¡¯t left out on the playground. Called the ¡°Buddy Bench¡±, students can use the seat as a safe and supportive place to let others know they¡¯d like to be included in playtime, but may be too shy to ask.

The concept of the Buddy Bench is simple: Students who want to partake in playground games and activities, but may feel hesitant, can take a seat, which signifies(±íÃ÷) to other children on the playground that they may need something extra to encourage them to participate.

The idea for the bench came about last year, when Farrell, school counselor at McIntyre Elementary, was conducting a leadership group to help students overcome shyness and gain confidence. Four fourth-grade students came up with the idea for the Buddy Bench in this workshop, and worked with Farrell to draft a letter to present to the Parent Teacher Staff Organization to make the bench a reality. The PTSO approved the students¡¯ proposal, and installed(°²×°) a bright metal bench with a cheerful sign that reads ¡°Buddy Bench¡± on the school¡¯s playground.

Since it was installed on Nov. 16, the bench has been effective. The simple concept has resonated with(ÒýÆð¹²Ãù) the students, and already has created a better environment within the school community.

¡°Each day, I go to see the buddy bench working,¡± Farrell said. ¡°The lessons they are learning now will benefit them their entire lives. It is simply a beautiful example of kids wanting to be kind and continue to be kind every day.¡±

A. Students who love games and activities.

B. Students who want and continue to be kind.

C. Students who are left out on the playground.

¡¾2¡¿What does the underlined word ¡°they¡± in the last paragraph refer to?

A. The PTSO.B. Buddy Bench users.

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿A Dutch artist and designer has come up with a device which he hopes will get rid of pollutants from Beijing's smog skies, creating clean air for the city's mask-wearing people.

An electromagnetic field£¨µç´Å³¡£© will pull particles£¨Î¢Á££© in the smog to the ground where they can be easily cleaned.

¡°It's like when you have a balloon which has static£¨¾²µç£© and your hair goes toward it. Same with the smog,¡± says artist Daan Roosegaarde.

His studio has reached an agreement with the Beijing government to test the technology in one of tile capital's parks.

With its skies regularly covered by dirty gray smog, Beijing this week announced a series of emergency measures to handle the problem.

Roosegaarde says an indoor model device has already proven it works and is confident that the results ¡ª with the help of a team of scientists and engineers ¡ª can be replicated outside.

¡°Beijing is quite a good place because the smog in Beijing is quite low. It lies in a valley so there's not so much wind. It's a good environment to explore this kind of thing.¡±

¡°We'll be able to purify the air and the challenge is to get the top of the smog so you can see the sun again.¡±

Roosegaarde acknowledges that projects like this are a way of drawing attention to the problem, rather than a practical solution to Beijing's awful air pollution.

¡°This is not the real answer for smog. The real answer has to do with clean cars, different industry and different lifestyles.¡±

However, he hopes the project will make a ¡°fundamental statement¡± by allowing the city's people to realize the difference between breathing clean and smog-filled air.

¡¾1¡¿The device works by _______.

A. helping keep the particles out with more masks

B. pulling pollutants to the ground with an electromagnetic field

C. absorbing hair with a balloon with static

D. creating clean air and let it out into the sky

¡¾2¡¿According to the passage, ______ .

A. the Beijing government has agreed to use the technology in Beijing

B. they have proven the results of the device both indoors and outdoors

C. the results of the air-cleaning device can be expectable

D. the Beijing government has never done anything to handle the air pollution

¡¾3¡¿What does Roosegaarde really mean by saying ¡°Beijing is quite a good place¡... ¡±?

A. The air pollution in Beijing is not quite serious.

B. The weather in Beijing is good for foreigners to live in.

C. Beijing is quite fit for using the air-cleaning device.

D. It is easy to get the top of the smog in Beijing.

¡¾4¡¿Roosegaarde appeals to people in Beijing to ________.

A. pay attention to air pollution and solve the problem finally

B. invent more devices to clean the smog in Beijing

C. drive modern cars and try different lifestyles

D. realize how serious the pollution they're facing is

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿Whoever has made a voyage up the Hudson River must remember the Catskill Mountains. They are a branch of the great Appalachian family, and can be seen to the west rising up to a noble height and towering over the surrounding country. When the weather is fair and settled, they are clothed in blue and purple, and print their beautiful shapes on the clear evening sky, but sometimes when it is cloudless, gray steam gathers around the top of the mountains which, in the last rays of the setting sun, will shine and light up like a crown of glory(»ªÀöµÄ»Ê¹Ú).

At the foot of these mountains, a traveler may see light smoke going up from a village. In that village, and in one of the houses (which, to tell the exact truth, was sadly time-worn and weather-beaten), there lived many years ago, a simple, good-natured fellow by the name of Rip Van Winkle.

Rip¡¯s great weakness was a natural dislike of all kinds of money-making labor. It could not be from lack of diligence, for he could sit all day on a wet rock and fish without saying a word, even though he was not encouraged by a single bite. He would carry a gun on his shoulder for hours, walking through woods and fields to shoot a few birds or squirrels. He would never refuse to help a neighbor, even in the roughest work. The women of the village, too, used to employ him to do such little jobs as their less helpful husbands would not do for them. In a word, Rip was ready to attend to everybody¡¯s business but his own.

If left to himself, he would have whistled life away in perfect satisfaction; but his wife was always mad at him for his idleness(ÀÁÉ¢). Morning, noon, and night, her tongue was endlessly going, so that he was forced to escape to the outside of the house ¡ª the only side which, in truth, belongs to a henpecked husband.

¡¾1¡¿Which of the following best describes the Catskill Mountains? ________

A. They are very high and beautiful in this area.

B. They are on the west of the Hudson River.

C. They can be seen from the Appalachian family.

D. They gather beautiful clouds in blue and purple.

¡¾2¡¿The hero of the story is probably__________.

A. hard-working and likes all kinds of work

B. gentle, helpful but a little idle

C. simple, idle but very dutiful

D. idle and hates all kinds of jobs

¡¾3¡¿The underlined words ¡°henpecked husband¡± in the last paragraph probably means a man who__________.

A. likes hunting B. is afraid of hens

C. is afraid of his wife D. loves his wife

¡¾4¡¿ What would be the best title for the text? ________.

A. Catskill Mountains. B. A Mountain Village.

C. A Dutiful Husband. D. Rip Van Winkle.

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿I remember my' mother as a strong woman. She came to America when she was 12-old enough to remember her language, she achieved scores and grades high enough to be admitted to Duke University. With a degree in computer science, she finally became the manager of a company in New York. My mother could give fluent speeches, say "wolves" correctly.

It was my mother who always stressed the importance of language. From the time l was born,1 was read to. 1 would fall asleep to the sounds of my parents' voices, whether it was my dad's softly accented, or my mother's clear English. The flow of language was unbroken, and whether in Chinese or English , the stream of communication flowed through our house.

One October morning in sixth grade, after my mother had left to catch the train to the city ,I left the house for the bus stop. 1 was surprised when I saw our car, the door hanging open. As I drew closer ,I saw my mother lying on the ground.

In the hospital, it was hard to believe that the lady who lay before me was my mom. My mother could not remember my name. As the leaves changed colors, it became clear that the stroke had created a wall between my mother's mind and mouth: her mind was not any less clear, but the words she spoke were not what she meant.

The battle my mother faced taught me the importance of language. Without it, identity does not exist; relationships cannot be formed; stories cannot be told; directions cannot be given, and knowing any-thing about anyone is impossible. Without language, communication cannot take place. Without language, one cannot express the beauty of a sunset or the kindness of a stranger. The world would pass us by in silence.

¡¾1¡¿From the second paragraph, we can know____.

A. the author was taught to read since she was born

B. the author's father spoke English poorly

C. the author couldn't fall asleep without being read to

D. the author's parents taught her language by talking a lot

¡¾2¡¿According to the last two paragraphs, the author's mom was unable to

A. think clearly

B. express herself well

C. speak

D. open her mouth

¡¾3¡¿This passage is mainly about ______.

A. a strong mother

B. the importance of language

C. a family disaster

D. the significance of teaching language

Students need enough sports and activities to keep fit and relax, and in some schools students are not giving enough time to do outdoor activities. Teachers ask students to spend most of their time at studies. But if students they feel tired, they can¡¯t pay attention to that they¡¯re studying. They will be in a bad health. It¡¯s also not good for his studies. In my opinions, it¡¯s important give students enough time to do outdoor activities. Then they will enjoy better health and work hard. So please pay more attention to students health and growth.

It makes me think of my parents and my grandmother. I haven't been home for a long time, so I have decided to go back in a few days." The show uses food as a window to introduce China to the world. Yesterday is my mother's birthday. My father and I planned to give him a surprise. In the morning, like usual, my father and mother went to work but I went to school at eight o'clock. My mother seemed to have forgotten her birthday. At four o'clock in the afternoon my father bought a bunch of flowers as well a lot of delicious food my mother likes to eat. I bought my mother a large and beautiful birthday cake. When my mother got to home, she was greatly surprised by that she saw. All that we had done made her very happily. After supper, I asked my mother to sit up and watch TV. My father began to clean the floor and I set out to doing the washing-up.
