Yesterday evening I went out for a walk without my parents in a nearby park after a long day of study.

There were many people especially women dancing with music happily and energetically. Suddenly, no music was heard. It seemed what their equipment didn¡¯t work. A young man came up into the crowd and offered to examine them. However, all the efforts he made seem in vain. People began to get a little impatience with it. Just at the moment a little boy had noticed the electrical socket(²å×ù) was disconnected. After the unexpecting accident, people enjoyed themselves once again. Seen this, my parents and I smiled in relief. What nice evening£¡

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿ Our dog Sandy is a golden retriever( Ñ°»ØÈ®). Once we performed an experiment to see how keen his nose was. There was one particular pile that must have had hundreds of sticks. We picked up one stick carved an X on it, walked away from the pile and then threw it back into the pile, not once but a dozen times into the pile. It was impossible for us to tell with any certainty which stick we had originally chosen. Each time he brought back that stick. It wasn't the shape or the size or the look of the stick that he used to pick it out from all the others. It was the smell we left on the stick. It is hard to imagine, but for dogs every living creature has its own distinctive smell.

The noses of people have about 5 million cells that sense smell. Dogs' noses have anywhere from 125 to 300 million cells. Moreover, these cells are closer to the surface than cells in our noses, and more active. It has been estimated that dogs such as Sandy have noses that are a million times more sensitive than ours. Clothes that we haven't worn for week, and places we've only touched lightly indicate our presence to dogs.

His ears are also remarkable. He can hear sounds that humans can't and at distances which are astonishing. It is over our head to know and understand that world. Yet we have the advantage of being able to imagine what his experience is like, though he probably doesn't think too much about how we see the world.

The environment is the world that all living things share. Living creatures are born into the environment and are part of it. Yet there is no creature who perceives (¸ÐÖªµ½) all of what is and what happens. For a dog like Sandy a book isn't much different than a stick, whereas for us one stick is pretty much like every other stick. There is no one world experienced by all living creatures.

¡¾1¡¿Why did the author conduct the experiment?

A.To train Sandy to pick out sticks.

B.To show how fast Sandy found sticks.

C.To prove sensitivity of Sandy's nose.

D.To teach Sandy to tell different smells.

¡¾2¡¿What does the author intend to do in paragraph 2?

A.Support the conclusion with numbers.

B.Summarize the previous paragraph.

C.Provide some advice for the readers.

D.Introduce a new topic for discussion.

¡¾3¡¿What does the underlined idiom in paragraph 3 mean?

A.Amazing.B.Difficult.

C.Reasonable.D.Inconvenient.

¡¾4¡¿Which of the following best expresses the author's opinion in the last paragraph?

A.Worlds to experience.

B.An environment to share.

C.No environment, no creatures.

D.One environment, many worlds.

On Christmas Eve,seventy-three-year-old George selected his food carefully.Skim milk was $2.99 white bread,89 cents with a 10-cent discount Leaving the cashier,he calculated that he had saved 80 cents today.

At the exit, the wind reminded him of his gloves.¡±Where are they?¡±Not in the coat pockets. Not in the grocery bag either. He was sure he was wearing them when he entered the store. He clearly remembered putting them into the pocket of this coat.George made a second thorough search of all his pockets, again including the grocery bag.Now he was sure they must have been dropped somewhere inside the store.

Old George had bought the black leather gloves at a 25£¥discount,for just $35.00,ten years ago. They were soft and warm and very durable. He had taken care not to let a drop of water or rain touch his expensive gloves,so they looked like new.Losing this favorite possession was almost like losing a child to him.

George, calm on the outside but nervous inside,re-entered the store. He followed the same route he had walked before, starting at the bread counter,to the milk section, the corner where salt and sugar were placed, then the rest of the store.Several minutes of anxious searching turned out to be in vain.He asked the customers whether they saw a pair of black leather gloves, but they said no.Then he went over to the cashier without hesitation to ask if she had received any lost gloves, but only received the same answer. His heart grew heavier.

¡°Society has changed, people have changed,¡±he murmured to himself.¡±Years ago,if somebody picked up something lost, they would give it back. Now a good action is lost.¡±

Yet he did not give up hope.He started to stare at anybody wearing black gloves to see if they looked like his.The first two persons he saw did wear gloves, but one was women¡¯s and the other not black.a

The event that stands out in Tom's memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years old. He was at home with his elder sister Jane. Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.

¡°Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop.¡± someone shouted.

Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate, a thick cloud of smoke greeted him. The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.

Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor(×ßÀÈ) through the smoke.

They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane suddenly stopped. She turned around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed her.

Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, whom they called Makcik. Jane began banging on Makcik's door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them, Tom could see many of their neighbors running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.

¡°She might have run for safety like everyone else!¡± Tom cried. However, Jane refused to give up. ¡°I know Makcik's still inside.¡± She said she was familiar with Makcik's daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She hit against the door. ¡°Go downstairs. Go now! Go!¡±

Paragraph 1:

Tom noticed the flame was reaching up.

Paragraph 2:

Luckily, some neighbors passing by stopped and offered help.
