If you do not use your arm or your legs for some time, they become weak; when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory(记忆力) is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong. If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault(过错). But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame(受责备), and few of us know that it is just his own fault. Have you ever found that some people can’t read or write but usually they have better memories? This is because they cannot read or write and they have to remember things they cannot write down in a little notebook. They have to remember days, names, songs and stories; so their memory is the whole time being exercised. So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people: Practice remembering.

短文改错
This afternoon I went to see my grandfather by a bus. It was very
crowded and I had to stand. Besides me there was a woman held a little boy
in her arms. In front of her, a young man occupies two seats, pretending to be
sleeping. I heard the little boy curious asking his mother, “What’s wrong with
the uncle?” I had thought if perhaps the woman would blame the man.
Beyond her expectations, the woman answered with a smile, “Be quiet. This
uncle must very tired because of hard work.” The young man must have
heard the word. His face turned red and offered one seat for the woman at once.

Parents should stop blaming themselves because there’s not a lot they can do about it. I mean the teenager problem. Whatever you do or however you choose to deal with it, at certain times a wonderful, reasonable and helpful child will turn into a terrible animal.

I’ve seen friends deal with it in all kinds of different ways. One strict mother insisted that her son, right from a child, should stand up whenever anyone entered the room, open doors and shake hands like a gentleman. I saw him last week when I called round. Sprawling himself (懒散地躺) on the sofa in full length, he made no attempt to turn off the loud TV he was watching as I walked in, and his greeting was no more than a quick glance at me. His mother was ashamed. “I don’t know what to do with him these days,” she said. “He’s forgotten all the manners we taught him.”

He hasn’t forgotten them. He’s just decided that he’s not going to use them. She confessed (坦白) that she would like to come up behind him and throw him down from the sofa onto the floor.

Another good friend of mine let her two daughters climb all over the furniture, reach across the table, stare at me and say, “I don’t like your dress; it’s ugly.” One of the daughters has recently been driven out of school. The other has left home.

“Where did we go wrong?” her parents are now very sad. Probably nowhere much. At least, no more than the rest of that unfortunate race, parents.

A. a specialist in teenager studies

B. a headmaster of a middle school

C. a parent with teenage children

D. a doctor for mental health problems

A. the change from good to bad that’ s seen in a child

B. the way that parents often blame themselves

C. the opinion that a child has of his parents

D. the advice that parents want their children to follow

48. The boy on the sofa would most probably be described as ______.

A. lazy   B. quiet   C. unusual    D. rude

49. From the second example we can infer that the parents of the two daughters ______.

A. pay no attention to them

B. are too busy to look after them

C. have come to hate them

D. feel helpless to do much about them

50. What is the author’s opinion about the sudden change in teenage children?

A. Parents have no choice but to try to accept it.

B. Parents should pay still more attention to the change.

C. Parents should work more closely with school teachers.

D. Parents are at fault for the change in their children.

Most recently, it's very common in students who need a parent present for job interviews. Naturally, it's easy to blame the students in these situations, but the bigger problem is us. We—as parents—are so eager to shelter our kids that we fail to realize that this in itself is harming them.As the mother of two young sons, I have to remind myself constantly that the biggest responsibility I have as a parent is to help them develop the skills needed to live in, to live without me.So, I'll let them fail.

I'll let them fail because as long as they are safe and warm inside their comfort zones, they will never grow. And failure — along with loss, heartbreak, disappointment, etc.— will be part of growth for them.Call me the anti-tiger mom, but leaving them alone, is my way of helping them become equipped to fit in this world as we know it today. From terrorism and seemingly endless natural disasters, to our national debt and beyond, if we expect the next generation to stand up to the very real problems of our time, we need to stop feeding them and start teaching them how to fish.

My children now are becoming little masters of compromise, but they try to negotiate (协商) everything now. It's a small price to help them learn a skill they'll use for the rest of their lives, including when I don't accompany them on job interviews.

1.Why do parents accompany their kids on job interviews?

A.Because they want to protect their kids from difficulties.

B.Because they think they can help them on the questions.

C.Because their kids are too shy to attend interviews.

D.Because their kids strongly request them to do so.

2.According to the author, what is beneficial to kids' development?

    A.Sheltering them.              B.Keeping them safe.

    C.Leaving them alone.           D.Blaming them.

3.Why does the author stress failure in kids' life?

A.To make them stronger than other kids.

B.To help them grow in this tough world.

C.To help them develop all social skills.

D.To make them learn to compromise.

4.Which of the following might be the best title for die text?

A.Never Shelter Your Kids              B.Let Your Kids Fail

C.Be Eager to Grow Up                  D.Live Without Parents

Dear daughter,

You are a wonderful person and your mother and I think the world of you. It will not be long before you leave home to make your way in the world. Can I please give you some friendly advice? Here are some things that you should never do.

1. Never Look Down Upon Yourself.

You are great and able to achieve great things so believe in yourself. When things go badly, never stop believing. Some girls get upset, blame themselves and lose self-esteem. All kinds of problems can follow.

2. Never Get Obsessed With Your Appearance.

We think you look great (though some of the clothes you wear worry us!). Please be happy with the person ,you are and the body you have. Eat reasonably, take exercise and be healthy. Some girls show too much concern about losing weight or getting the perfect shape. You look fine.

3. Never Compromise Your Personal Safety.

Never put yourself at serious risk. This means that you cannot trust people until you really know them and that sometimes you have to avoid things that look like they might be fun. Never get drunk or take drugs. Unluckily there are some bad people out there and it is best not to take risks.

4. Never Give Less Than Your Best.

We are very proud of what you have achieved so far. You should be proud too. Keep doing well. Keep trying your hardest at everything you do. No one can ask for more than that.

5. Never Forget That Your Parents Love You.

Whatever happens in life, your family will still be your family. Whatever difficulties you meet with, you can always talk to us and we will try to help. We are here for you.
