In a spelling contest (竞赛), an 11-year-old girl was asked to spell a certain word. But with her     voice the judges were not sure if she spelled the word with the letter A or E. They talked it over and finally decided to     ask her what she had said. By then, the girl knew she had     the word, but instead of lying, she told the truth that she had said the     letter—so she lost the contest.

As the girl walked off the    , the entire audience stood to their feet, clapping to praise her    . Later, dozens of newspaper reporters wrote about this girl’s honesty.     she lost the contest, she     the biggest contest that day: the contest of her     .

Probably the biggest test of our character is what we should do if we knew we would never get    . This young girl could easily have     and nobody would have known it    herself. However, that’s just it: she would know she did wrong. It’s been said, “If you cheat, you make yourself    .” This young girl was strong and smart enough to value her own character more than the     from a spelling contest. Her     for herself was more important than any respect others might give her for winning a contest. She knew she would have to     with herself and the     she made at that moment would have a long-lasting influence.

It’s so true that the choices you make today make     you are tomorrow. Our children will follow our behavior. So if we want them to     to be honest, we must be honest ourselves. Remember, our kids are     what we do even when we don’t know.

To what degree can a computer achieve intelligence? The answer to this question may lie in a newly-developed US computer program called Smarter Child and the Internet.

If you ran into Smarter Child online, you would be surprised at this kid’s huge memory. It can recite many facts. For example, Smarter Child knows every baseball player in every team this season.

He knows every word in the dictionary and the weather in every major city areas across the US. However, if you ask Smarter Child other questions, you get strange answers. A question about Smarter Child’s age returns. “One year, 11 days, 16 hours, 7 minutes, and 47 seconds!” Asking where he lives, you get, “In a clean room in a high-tech building in California.”

Smarter Child uses the vast information on the World Wide Web as his memory bank. To answer questions about spelling, for instance, Smarter Child goes to American Heritage Dictionary online. For the weather, he visits www.intellicast.com.

Some scientists believe that by joining the many systems of the Internet, an artificial being with the combined knowledge of, say, Albert Einstein, Richard Nixon and Britney Spears can be born. However, if Smarter Child wants to think and learn on his own like the boy-computer David in the movie A. I. (Artificial Intelligence), he must overcome two problems.

The first is that computers find it difficult to read web pages because the files are labeled in different ways. That’s why programmers need to tell Smarter Child where to look for the weather. It would be a much more difficult task to let him find it himself.

Another problem is that while Smarter Child can process information more exactly and faster than any human, he lacks common sense—a basic grounding of knowledge that is obvious to any young child.

From the text we can infer that www.intellicast.com is a website          .

A. which is specially designed to help Smarter Child

B. where we people can find Smarter Child

C. where weather forecasts are made

D. which is about artificial intelligence

It is probably most difficult for Smarter Child to         .

A. tell us how to spell a difficult word

B. tell us how the American government is run

C. provide us with a famous poem by Shakespeare

D. learn the ability to tell right behaviors from wrong ones

Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?

A. Smart Child has his own memory bank big enough for all kinds of information.

B. A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) is probably the name of a film about a boy-computer.

C. Smart Child can recognize different files and find information needed on his own.

D. We have similar product now which has the knowledge of Einstein, Nixon and Spears.

Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A. A New Web Child            B. Smarter Child

C. The Future of Internet             D. Intelligence Development

Language-learners who say they never or hardly ever use dictionaries often speak English well but usually write poorly, because they make many mistakes.

The students who use dictionaries most do not learn especially well either. The ones who look up every new word do not read fast. So they do not have time to read much. Those who use small two-language dictionaries have the worst problems. Their dictionaries often give only one or two words as translations (翻译) of English. But one English word often has many translations in a foreign language and one foreign word has many translations in English.

The most successful students are those who use large college edition dictionaries with about 100,000 words but do not use them too often. When they are reading, these students first try to get the general idea and understand new words from the context. Then they reread and use the dictionary to look up only key words that they still do not understand. They use dictionaries more for writing. If they are not sure how to spell a word, or divide it into syllables (音节), they always use a dictionary. Also, if they think a noun might have an unusual plural form, they check these in a dictionary.

1.According to the passage, which of the following is right?

A.Students who never use dictionary can speak well and write well.

B.Whatever new words you meet while reading, just look them up in the dictionary.

C.Small two-language dictionaries are bad for learning English.

D.An English word only has one translation.

2.This passage mainly tells us        .

A.that students shouldn’t use small two-language dictionaries

B.what were the defects (缺点) of small two-language dictionaries

C.why students should use large college edition dictionaries

D.what dictionary students should choose and how to use it

3.Which is not mentioned in this passage?

A.How to make good use of a dictionary.

B.When to use a dictionary.

C.How to improve spoken English.

D.How to practice reading fast.
