【题目】 For hundreds of years, Japan has been hit, from time to time, by tsunami(海啸), which is caused by earthquakes or underwater volcanoes. The story of the boy Yuuki is the story of such a disaster.

Yuuki lived with his family in a seaside village, below a small mountain. One day, as he played on top of the mountain, Yuuki felt a small earthquake but it was not strong enough to frighten anybody. 【题目】阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。

Silence is unnatural to man. He does all he can 1(make) a noise in the world, and he fears silence more than anything else. Even his conversation is an attempt to prevent a fearful silence. If he2(introduce) to another person, and a number of pauses occur in the conversation, he regards himself as3failure, and is full of envy of the emptiest-headed chatterbox (喋喋不休的人).He knows that ninety-nine percent of human conversation 4(mean) no more than the buzzing of a fly, but he is anxious to join in the buzz and to prove that he is a man and not a waxwork figure (蜡塑人像).

The aim of conversation is to keep up the buzzing sound. There are, it must be admitted, different qualities of buzz; there is even a buzz that is as5(annoy) as the continuous noise made by a mosquito (蚊子). But at a dinner party one would rather be a mosquito 6a quiet person. Most buzzing, fortunately, is pleasant to the ear. and some of it is pleasant even to the mind.

Those7 hate to pick up the weather as a8(conversation) opening seem to me not to know the reason why human beings wish to talk. Very few human beings join in a conversation in the hope of9(learn) anything new. Some of them are content if they are 10(mere) allowed to go on making a noise into other people's ears.

【题目】 Empathy (同理心)is one of those strange qualities—something almost everyone wants, but few know how to truly give or receive it. In a world where self-satisfaction is emphasized, it is in short supply but high demand. This is all the more reason to teach the next generation what it means to have empathy for those around them.

What Is Empathy?— Many people confuse sympathy and empathy, but they are two distinct values. Empathy is not just the ability to understand someone's feelings; criminals often take advantage of people by appearing to understand their feelings and subsequently gaining their trust. Empathy is more than that. Not only is it the ability to recognize how someone feels, but it also values and respects the feelings of another person. It means treating others with kindness, dignity, and understanding.

Kids Need To See Adults Show Empathy—While some children are gifted with naturally kind hearts, in most cases kids need to see empathy modeled by the adults around them. It begins with the way parents relate to their children. Parents who show an interest in the things that matter to their kids and respond to emotions in a positive and caring way are teaching the skill of empathy.

Meet Emotional Needs—When children have their emotional needs met, two things happen. They learn how to meet the emotional needs of others and they are anchored in what they are receiving, meaning that they are secure enough to give to others when the need arises but first they need to receive. An empty jug cannot fill a cup.

It's a good idea to talk to kids about emotions and how other people experience them. Give their emotions names (for example, jealousy, anger, and love) and teach them that these are normal. Talk to them about how to handle emotions in a positive way and point out situations where other people are experiencing emotions. Teach them about respecting the emotions of others and show them how to act in a situation where a response is required.

1Why is it that the next generation are taught to have empathy?

A.Because people tend to center themselves.B.Because everyone lacks empathy.

C.Because empathy is a strange quality.D.Because it's better to give than to receive.

2Which situation can empathy be used in?

A.When a mathematician is calculating the area of a farmland.

B.When a teacher is comforting a student about his failure in exams.

C.When a criminal is cheating a victim.

D.When a dancer is dancing to music.

3What does the underlined sentence "An empty jug cannot fill a cup" mean?

A.An empty jug is too small to hold a cup.

B.It's a must to talk to kids about emotions.

C.Adults should set an example to kids.

D.Kids give empathy with their emotional needs met first.

4What is the main topic of the passage?

A.How to train kids to have empathy.

B.How to distinguish sympathy and empathy.

C.How to help kids finish empathy-related tasks.

D.Whether kids can be trained to be more empathetic.

【题目】Young people almost never get a good press(评论) these days. “Their outlook is centered on trashy books and films,” expressed one citizen in a letter I recently came across in the Daily Mail. It seems that people have been complaining about the young since ancient times. However, the young are probably no worse than they’ve ever been. And I think they’re better. Teenagers today are brighter, more energetic, more outgoing, and more interesting than any generation before.

The truth is, we hear plenty of bad news about youth, but we never hear about the majority. Surely they all want to be footballers or attractive models? Not a bit of it. When research company Britain-Thinks examined teenagers attitudes earlier this year, they found that the most popular goal (shared by some 70 percent) was to “have a job you love”, followed by having a university degree, owning your own home and being in a happy, long-term relationship. It tallies with another study by the Institute for Economic and Social Research, which found that what made teenagers happiest wasn’t a new smart-phone or pair of shoes, but “the simple things in life” such as close friends, going swimming and spending time with their parents.

Indeed, the more you look at the young, the more impressive they seem. They are, of course, more technologically knowledgeable and skillful than any generation before them. But the interesting thing is that they’re not merely consumers; they’re creators. Think of all those young people developing their own websites or machines.

Seventeen-year-old Nick D’Aloisio is an example. He invented a news-summary app (应用程序)called Summly and sold it to Yahoo this year for a reported 18 million. The company offered him a job in California, but he turned it down. “I’ll be staying in London,” he explained. “I want to finish my A levels and I couldn’t really live on my own out there.”

Of course they aren’t perfect, and every generation has its fair share of bad apples. But I think our future is in safe hands.

1The underlined part “tallies with” in Paragraph 2 probably means “ ” .

A. leads to B. focuses on

C. agrees with D. belongs to

2The example of the seventeen-year-old is to show that young people .

A. Are quite creative B. can find a job easily

C. can earn a living by themselves D. are homesick for their hometown

3What’s the author’s attitude towards the young generation?

A. Worried. B. Surprised.

C. Uninterested. D. Hopeful.
