    1．If you intend using humor in your talk to make people smile，you must know how to identify shared experiences and problems．Your humor must be related to the audience and should help to show them that you are one of them or that you understand their situation and are in sympathy with their point of view．Depending on whom you are addressing，the problems will be different．If you are talking to a group of managers，you may refer to the disorganized methods of their secretaries； alternatively if you are addressing secretaries，you may want to comment on their disorganized bosses．
    Here is an example，which I heard at a nurses'convention，of a story that works well because the audience all shared the same view of doctors．A man arrives in heaven and is being shown around by St．Peter．He sees wonderful accommodations，beautiful gardens，sunny weather，and so on．Everyone is very peaceful，polite and friendly until，waiting in a line for lunch，the new arrival is suddenly pushed aside by a man in a white coat，who rushes to the head of the line，grabs his food and stomps over to a table by himself．"Who is that？"the new arrival asked St．Peter．"Oh，that's God．"came the reply，"but sometimes he thinks he's a doctor．"
    If you are part of the group，which you are addressing，you will be in a position to know the experiences and problems，which are common to all of you and it'll be proper for you to make a comment on the uneatable canteen food or the chairman's bad taste in ties．With other audiences you mustn't try to interrupt with humor，as they will hate an outsider making unkind remarks about their canteen or their chairman．You will be on safer ground if you stick to scapegoats（替罪羊） like the Post Office or the telephone system．
    Look for the humor．It often comes from the unexpected．A twist on a familiar quote"If at first you don't succeed，give up"or a play on words or on a situation．Search for exaggeration（夸张） and understatements．Look at your talk and pick out a few words or sentences，which you can turn about and add with humor．

    （2）．Positive thinking．I'm obviously a big supporter of positive thinking as the best way to achieve your goals，and it turns out that it can lead to happiness too．Optimism and self-esteem are some of the best indicators of people who lead happy lives．Happy people feel empowered，take control of their lives，and have a positive outlook on life．
    Action steps：Make positive thinking a habit．In fact，this should be one of the first habits you develop．Get into the habit of getting rid of all negative thoughts and replacing them with positive ones．Instead of"I can't"，think"I can"．It may sound silly，but it works for me，every time．
    （3）．Flow．This is a popular concept on the Internet these days-a state we enter when we are completely focused on the work or task before us．We are so buried in our task that we lose track of time．Having work and leisure that get you in this state of flow will almost undoubtedly lead to happiness．People find greatest enjoyment not when they're passively mindless，but when they're absorbed in a mindful challenge．
    Action steps：Find work that you have a passion for．Seriously-this is an extremely important step．Find hobbies that you have a passion for．Turn off the TV-this is the opposite of flow-and go outside and do something that truly engages you．

    9．A study by Oxford University Press （OUP） into British children's writing shows that the future of written English will learn more from Hollywood films than Dickens or Shakespeare．
    Researchers who looked at the analysis of 74，000short stories in a national competition found the children were increasingly using American words such as garbage，trash can，sidewalk，candy，and flashlight．The stories，written by pupils aged 7to 13，show how fairy cakes are referred to as cupcakes and a dinner jacket has become a tuxedo（晚礼服．"Smart"is now often used as"clever"．

    According to the National Sleep Foundation，95percent of Americans use some device，whether it's a TV，laptop，cell phone or other products，within an hour of killing time．"Artificial light exposure between dusk and the time we go to bed at night push our sleeping sense to a later hour-making it more difficult to fall asleep，"said Charles Czeisler，Ph．D．，M．D．，chief of the division of sleep medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston．
