²Î¿¼´Ê»ã£º£ºa supplement to our English class ¶ÔÓ¢Óï¿ÎÌõIJ¹³ä

Ladies and gentlemen,

Welcome to our English Corner. This Corner was set up three years ago. Every Sunday morning, students from different schools gathered around here. Many college students and some foreigners often join us, We practice spoken English by talking about everything we are interested in. We also exchange our experience in English study. We all have a good time here. Thousands of people have been here since it was set up.

We think that we have learned a lot by taking part in activities here. It is a real supplement to our English class and it is welcomed by students. Their parents and teachers. They all think it is helpful. If you want to know more about the corner, you may talk to the students here.

From the moment that an animal is born it has to make decisions£®___1.___ The animal is, in fact, playing a very dangerous game with its environment.

___2.____ It is different from the individual learning that an animal does in the course of its own lifetime.Genetic learning is learning by a species(animals of the same kind)as a whole ,and it is achieved by selection of those members of each generation that happen to act in the right way£®__3.____The more important individual experience is likely to be, the less important is genetic learning as a means of getting over the problems of the survival game.___ 4.____It is not surprising to find that very few species indeed depend wholly upon genetic learning£®

In the great majority of animals, their particular ways of acting in a new environment are a compound£¨¸´ºÏÌ壩of individual experience added to the action patterns animals are born with£®__5.____

A. It has to decide which of the things around it are for eating, and which are to be avoided.

B. That is why animals can survive£®

C. The animal's life will come to an end.

D. Animals¡¯ ability to act reasonably is believed to come partly from what we may call ¡°genetic learning¡±

E. Because most animals live in ever changing environments from one generation to the next.

F. However, the role of genetic learning depends upon how similar the future environment is to the past£®

G. Each generation has its own way of eating.

Along the river banks of the Amazon and the Orinoco there lives a bird that swims before it can fly, flies like a fat chicken, eats green leaves, has the stomach of a cow and has claws (צ) on its wings when young. They build their homes about 4.6m above the river, an important feature (ÌØÕ÷) for the safety of the young. It is called the hoatzin.

In appearance, the birds of both sexes look very much alike with brown on the back and cream and red on the underside. The head is small, with a large set of feathers on the top, bright red eyes, and blue skin. Its nearest relatives are the common birds, cuckoos. Its most striking feature, though, is only found in the young.

Baby hoatzins have a claw on the leading edge of each wing and another at the end of each wing tip. Using these four claws, together with the beak (à¹), they can climb about in the bushes, looking very much like primitive£¨Ô¶¹ÅµÄ£© birds must have done. When the young hoatzins have learned to fly, they lose their claws.

During the drier months between December and March hoatzins fly about the forest in groups of 20 to 30 birds, but in April, when the rainy season begins, they collect together in smaller living units of two to seven birds for producing purposes.

1.What is the text mainly about?

A£®Hoatzins in dry and rainy seasons.

B£®The relatives and enemies of hoatzins.

C£®Primitive birds and hoatzins of the Amazon.

D£®The appearance and living habits of hoatzins.

2.Young hoatzins are different from their parents in that____ £®

A£®they look like young cuckoos

B£®they have claws on the wings

C£®they eat a lot like a cow

D£®they live on river banks

3.What can we infer about primitive birds from the text?

A£®They had claws to help them climb.

B£®They could fly long distances.

C£®They had four wings like hoatzins.

D£®They had a head with long feathers on the top.

4.Why do hoatzins collect together in smaller groups when the rainy season comes?

A£®To find more food.

B£®To protect themselves better.

C£®To keep themselves warm.

D£®To produce their young.
