In the United States, friendships can be close, constant, intense, generous and real, yet fade away in a short time if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while— then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship where it left off and are delighted.

In the States, you can feel free to visit people’s homes, share their holidays, or enjoy their lives without fear that you are taking on a lasting obligation(义务). Do not hesitate to accept hospitality(好客) because you can’t give it in return. No one will expect you to do so for they know you are far from home. Americans will enjoy welcoming you and be pleased if you accept their hospitality easily.

Once you arrive there, the welcome will be full and warm and real. Most visitors find themselves readily invited into many homes there. In some countries it is considered inhospitable to entertain at home, offering what is felt as only home—cooked food, not “ doing something for your guest”. It is felt that restaurant entertaining, shows more respect and welcome. Or for other different reasons, such as crowded space, language difficulties, or family custom, outsiders are not invited into homes.

In the United States, both methods are used, but it is often considered more friendly to invite a person to one’s home than to go to a public place, except in purely business relationships. So, if your host or hostess brings you home, do not feel that you are being shown inferior treatment.

Don’t feel neglected if you do not find flowers awaiting you in your hotel room, either. Flowers are very expensive there; hotel delivery is uncertain; arrival times are delayed, changed, or canceled —— so flowers are not customarily sent as a welcoming touch. Please do not feel unwanted! Outward signs vary in different lands; the inward welcome is what matters, and this will be real.

In the United States, you will find friendships ______ if circumstances change.

  A. die suddenly                          B. pass away

  C. disappear gradually                    D. last forever

Americans _____ their foreign friends to make a return for their hospitality.

   A. ask          B. don’t expect             C. never allow     D. wish

In some other countries, giving a dinner party at home is considered ______ than in a restaurant.

   A. less friendly   B. less hospitable      C. more natural     D. more popular

According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

   A. Flowers are signs of outward welcome.

  B. Flowers are expensive.

   C. Flowers are available at all time.

D. Flowers are not necessarily sent to guests.

The world of the science-fiction 3-D film Avatar is so perfect that the line between fact and fiction has become somewhat blurred (模糊) .

Movie-goers have admitted being annoyed by depression at not being able to visit the planet Pandora. Set in the future when Earth's resources have been used up, director James Cameron's film tells the story of a company trying to exploit a rare mineral on a new planet. The humans clash with the natives — a peace-loving race of 7-foot-tall, blue-skinned creatures called the Na'vi, who exist in perfect harmony with nature.

Fans have flooded the Internet with their confused feelings. On the site Avatar Forums (论坛), the topic "Ways to deal with the depression of the dream of Pandora not being able to come true" has more than 1,000 posts. I still don't really see any reason to keep doing things at all. I live in a dying world." On the Avatar site Naviblue, a fan calling himself Jorba has even asked others to join him in starting a real Na'vi tribe.

第一节阅读表达 (共5小题, 每小题2分,满分10分)
Most people say “yes” much more readily than “no”.
A friend is moving house this weekend and would like some help, and you agree. But, what you really wanted was relaxing at home for a couple of quiet days. Or a roommate spends the whole weekend playing video games and wants to borrow your homework for “reference”. But, you’ve just finished it after working hard for a whole day.
Many people say “yes” to this kind of requests. They tend not to consider their own interests and feelings, and are often angry with themselves afterwards. Saying “no” requires courage and considerable practice. “Everyone wants to be liked,” says Gabriele Steinki, a German psychologist, “Saying ‘no’ risks losing the affection of the person asking for the favor. Or even a job.” The result is that many people say “yes” just for keeping the peace. But experts say this regrettable. Anyone should have the right to say “no”. In fact, rejecting a request can even help to stabilize a relationship because it expresses real affection. But, for people accustomed to agreeing every request, it’s very distressing to say “no”.
Most people believe that if they say “no”, they’ll lose the affection of the person. But the affection is important to them. This way of thinking can be replaced by this: “If he only likes me because I always do what suits him, then the price of this affection is too high in the long term.”
When people saying “no”, Steinki advises giving the reasons calmly until the person gets the message.

Boys' schools are the perfect place to teach young men to express their emotions and involve them in activities such as art, dance and music.
Far from the traditional image of a culture of aggressive masculinity (阳刚), the absence of girls gives boys the chance to develop without pressure to obey a stereotype (陈规旧俗), a US study says.
Boys at single-sex schools were said to be more likely to get involved in cultural and artistic activities that helped develop their emotional expressiveness, rather than feeling they had to obey the "boy code" of hiding their emotions to be a "real man".
The findings of the study go against received wisdom that boys do better when taught alongside girls.
Tony Little, headmaster of Eton, warned that boys were being failed by the British education system because it had become too focused on girls. He criticized teachers for failing to recognize that boys are actually more emotional than girls.
The research argued that boys often perform badly in mixed schools because they become discouraged when their female peers do better earlier in speaking and reading skills.
But in single-sex schools teachers can tailor lessons to boys' learning style, letting them move around the classroom and getting them to compete in teams to prevent boredom, wrote the study's author, Abigail James, of the University of Virginia.
Teachers could encourage boys to enjoy reading and writing with "boy-focused" approaches such as themes and characters that appeal to them.Because boys generally have more acute vision learn best through touch, an are physically more active, they need to be given "hands-on" lessons where they are allowed to walk around; "Boys in mixed schools view classical music as feminine (女性的) and prefer the modem type in which violence and sexism are major themes, "James wrote.
Single-sex education also made it less likely that boys would feel they had to obey a stereotype that men should be "masterful and in charge" in relationships."In mixed schools boys feel forced to act like men before they understand themselves well enough to know what that means," the study reported.
