2.[1]When I was young,I wondered why neighborhoods didn't plant fruit trees to build community.Later,my husband and I decided the right way to answer this question was to do itourselves,so we transformed our front yard with fruit trees, such as strawberries, pomegranates (石榴),and oranges.
[2]Every crop brought us closer to neighbors and strangers. The food was an excuse to communicate.Kids in the neighborhood including our sons learned patience and gentle timing. When we had extra,we'd share it.Then,we received a powerful lesson:a gift hidden as a loss. Our first-ever crop of pomegranates had ripened. But at harvest, they       ,stolen in the middle of the night. We were shocked, sad and angry. One of my friends had fun suggesting we post a sign to curse(诅咒)thieves who stole our fruit.
[3]And suddenly, the lesson was clear. We did need a sign.Last fall,we had a larger crop of pomegranates. We posted a sign that read,"If you'd like one, please knock and introduce yourself and we'd be happy to cut one off the tree for you.Cutting saves the branches and promotes future growth so we can continue to share with new friends like you."
[4]While one pomegranate was taken, most others were left to new friends. This year,we won the Kindness Contest award,so we planted three new fruit trees-a peach,a pear and a plum. Before they fruit,I'll add a big sign to the yard to encourage sharing.Today,I am happy to role model generosity for my young sons and to have been blessed with the opportunity to provide an edible(可食的)front yard for others.

9.Working outside the International Space Station (ISS),an astronaut is suddenly hit by a piece of space debris(碎片)that damages his spacesuit.Alarmed,he realizes he's just seconds from disaster.Moving fast, his prepared robot partner slaps(拍打)an auto-patch over the tear in his spacesuit.Huge sighs of relief fill the ISS.Inside, the astronaut responsible for saving the spacewalker's life controls everything the robot avatar has done-including rescuing its human partner-while it works outside the space station.
R2:The Real Deal
A robot companion can come in handy to space travelers, whether they're as far away as Mars or as close as a space station or moon base.Space-travelling avatars, controlled remotely by humans are still a concept. But earlier in the year 2011,NASA sent a humanoid robot into space for the first time. It's called R2,short for Robonaut 2.The robot was delivered by the space shuttle Discovery and will remain on the ISS to be tested.
NASA expects robots like R2 to be a huge help to astronauts."Our goal is for robots to work side by side with humans,"says NASA's Matt Ondler.R2 is controlled by humans using laptops. It's programmed to perform a number of small tasks, such as"find an object."In most situations, humans are still far better with their hands than robots. But that's not necessarily true in space, where astronauts must wear bulky spacesuits and heavy gloves. And since they don't need to eat, breathe,or go to the bathroom, robonauts have the advantage for lengthy jobs.
R2 isn't ready for spacewalks yet,but NASA hopes that future improvements will make this possible."Robonauts will help our astronauts with the three D's:jobs that are dirty, dull, and dangerous,"says Ondler.
To The Moon
Someday the space agency hopes to send R2 to the moon.Sending a robot to the moon will befar less expensive than sending a human.A robot is stronger, can survive in tighter spaces, and doesn't need air.Even better, robots don't care how long it takes for NASA to return them to Earth.
Once on the moon, the robonaut could perform experiments, send live video back to Earth, talk to classrooms full of kids, and explore the lunar surface.R2 will be able to move using legs,or by attaching its torso(躯干)to a four-wheeled rover(探测器) and becoming part of vehicle. And when R2's battery is low,it can plug into a solar-powered recharging station and get some much-needed juice. All in all,a pretty sweet life for a humble robot!
The future R2 would be designed to operate by itself. But for difficult tasks,a human operator would control it like an avatar in a video game.NASA will need people skilled at operating robonauts to ensure the success of future missions. So the next time your mom complains that you're spending too much time on video games, just tell her you're training for a job with NASA.

D.It proves to be a good companion for space travelers.
53.By saying"All in all,a pretty sweet life for a humble robot!",the writer means thatB.

19.Can an iPhone really make you happier?A new study says"Yes".According to a survey of 35,000people around the world,access to (进入) communications technology is a major factor in increasing happiness.
We all need a few basic things in order to be happy:access to clean water and food,a home,health care,and relationships.But once the necessities are met,what do people most desire?The answer is access to communication devices (设备),according to the survey by BCS,the Chartered Institute for IT.
Most people in the study gave similar answers,but the potential (潜在的) happiness increase that technology could bring about was particularly great in women and in people with low incomes or levels of education-even in developing countries.
While farmers in the African countryside aren't likely to pick up the latest shiny toys from Apple,even a simple cell phone can serve as a valuable happiness-increasing tool,allowing the development of social networks beyond the community.
"Whether young or old,we're all social beings,we all have a need for communication,"researcher Paul Flatters told BBC News.
In rural (乡村) communities,access to communications technology such as cell phones and computers is limited,but expanding,thanks to groups like One Laptop Per Child,which supplies children in developing countries with basic laptops that allow them to research school projects and connect with others all over the world.Other groups,like the UK's Computer Aid,are helping rural villagers get wired with the help of portable cyber cafes (便携式网吧) that allow locals to log online to send emails and perform work-related research.
And back home,it seems from the results that small IT devices like the iPhone really can increase your happiness-provided you use it to talk with and send messages,photos,and videos to friends and family to help strengthen your social networks,rather than simply play Angry Birds.

45.How does an iPhone make one happier,according to the study?B
A.By giving one a higher income.
B.By letting one keep in touch with others.
C.By giving one chances to surf the Internet.
D.By letting one enjoy movies or take photos.
46.What does the study show us?C
A.How many people are using iPhones.
B.What communication tools people like to use.
C.What people need besides the basic necessities.
D.What is the life of people in developing countries like.
47.The underlined words"Angry Birds"in the last paragraph most probably refer to"B".
A.birds that are angry    B.an e-game
C.naughty children        D.a computer
48.The author wrote the text to tell us thatA.
A.communications technology can increase happiness
B.the iPhone is the best cell phone in the world
C.playing with an iPhone is a waste of time
D.people in developed countries are happier.
