In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believeing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.

I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.

However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: "I may have lost, but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try." What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one's self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve can we discover a new meaning in competition.

1.What does this passage mainly talk about?

A. Competition helps to set up self-respect

B. Opinions about competition are different among people

C. Competition is harmful to personal quality development

D. Failures are necessary experience in competition

2.The underlined phrase "the most vocal" in Paragraph 3 means .

A. those who try their best to win

B. those who value competition most highly

C. those who are against competition most strongly

D. those who rely on others most for success

3.What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a "desire to fail"?

A. One's worth lies in his performance compared with others

B. One's success in competition needs great efforts

C. One's achievement is determined by his particular skills

D. One's success is based on how hard he has tried

4.Which point of view may the author agree to?

A. Every effort should be paid back

B. Competition should be encouraged

C. Winning should be a life-and-death matter

D. Fear of failure should be removed in competition

Tears ran down from my eyes as I saw the essay my high school English teacher had just handed back. A big F was written on top. I was hopeless. I was stupid ! My face burned with shame when my classmates called me stupid.

“I’m the only one who doesn’t know my ABCs!” I sobbed to Mom.

“I’ll help,” she promised.

Every day I sat with her, but to me, cat looked like cta and red was reb. Frustrated, I would return to my bedroom and draw, filling the paper with houses, restaurants and offices.

“When I grow up, I want my own store,”  I told Mom , pointing to my drawings.

“ That’s great !” she said, “ but first you have to learn to read.”

Later, I was diagnosed with dyslexia (失读症). So Mom took me to a learning centre, where I was given reading exercises. But I still had a hard time. Finally, I graduated, but I was afraid of my reading skills.

“I’ll never get a job !”  I cried to Mom later again.

“ Don’t focus on what you can’t do,” she comforted, “ Concentrate on what you really can.”

But what can I do? I wondered. Suddenly, I thought of the drawings I’d made as a child and my dream of having my own store. I enjoyed sales so much that over the next few years, I tried my hand at other businesses. Today, I watch over seven branches. We have 187 employees and $15 million in sales.

While I’ll never be what my teachers might have wanted, I am a success--on my own terms. The other day a student sent me a card, reading: You gave me so much confidence. I hope to be like you when I am big. Tears of joy filled my eyes. This was my A, and I smiled.

What Does the Length of Your Fingers Say About You? Are you the peace-loving type or the ambitious go-getter?

Your finger length might be a clue. Take a look at your fingers. Would you believe me if I told you that the length of your fingers in relation to one another can predict your personality? I know that it sounds like one of those silly tests you see on Facebook, but I have to admit that it is exactly correct for me. Here’s how it works.

Look at your three middle fingers of your hand. Is your index finger longer than your ring finger? Is your ring finger longer than your index finger? Or are the two of the same length? Find the situation that best matches your hand and see if what follows is an accurate description of your personality.

Longer ring finger: The Sweet Talker

If your ring finger is longer than your index finger, research shows that you’re likely a charming type, and you can probably talk yourself out of any situation. Others often find this personality type irresistible and will go to great lengths to help you. You’re more likely to take risks, and you’re good at problem-solving. People in this category make great engineers, soldiers and crossword-puzzle solvers.

Longer index finger: The (Over) Confident One

If your index finger is longer than your ring finger, chances are you are full of confidence—possibly even to the point of being over-confident and proud. You are not necessarily introverted (内向的), but you do enjoy time to yourself, especially when you’re trying to complete a project. You are a dream pursuer who can make things happen, but you may be shy when it comes to taking the first step in a relationship. You are also probably happy with what you have, but you’re always wishing for more.

Index and ring finger are of the same length: The Peacemaker

If your index finger and ring finger are roughly of the same length, you are likely to avoid conflict at all costs and seek to keep the peace in your relationships. You are well-organized, faithful and sympathetic. But deep down under all of that caring and peace-loving, you also have a hot-tempered side that can appear unexpectedly when you’re pushed too far. You will try your hardest to avoid a fight.

How well do these descriptions match your personality? I was surprised at the accuracy in my case, but I’m not going to tell you which one it was!

1.Which of the following hand could be an engineer’s hand?

A. B.

C. D.

2.We can learn from the passage that the author ______.

A. is very charming and helpful

B. always tries hard to avoid a fight

C. often takes silly tests on Facebook

D. thinks the descriptions suit him well

3.What does the passage intend to tell us?

A. How accurate the description of the test is.

B. The length of fingers can reveal personality.

C. Why your fingers are not of the same length.

D. Personality is determined by your finger length.

4.Where can you probably find the text?

A. A popular magazine.

B. An official report.

C. A public advertisement.

D. A biology textbook.

What can you imagine the life 100 years from now? In fact, no one can know it from now, but scientists studying the evolution of the society, human life and the world in general make such kind of predictions based on scientific data. According to their publications in scientific journals, let’s see how the world might look like in 100 years from now.

Embedded computers

According to predictions by Ian Pearson and Patrick Tucker, by 2050 the human body will be embedded2 with computers, at least in a big part of the population, and by 2075 most of the citizens of the developed world will have some kind of chips built in their brains to make them work faster and share thoughts in the form of computer data.

Superhuman geniuses

Developments in genetic engineering will create human geniuses who will live forever. Does it sound unbelievable? It is sure that there will be a way to influence the brain to increase the intelligence level and with the help of genetics it will be possible to maintain human body for many years.

Global currency

According to futurists, it is very likely that a global electronic currency will be created. They say that the local and national currencies will be few until mid-century and will gradually disappear, let alone metal currencies.

Three world languages

There will be only three world languages: English, Spanish and Chinese. Other languages will have no chance to survive through time. Futurists say that many minority languages are already extinct and the fac t that all educated people in the world speak at least one of these languages will help in this way.

Oceans as a food source

It is one of the most “confident” future devel opments, according to scientists, because if the world population continues growing at the same rate, it will reach ten billion. So the food will not be enough. Thus the oceans will be used to raise fish and to provide populations with fresh water taken from the sea plants.

Journeys into space

Most futurists agree on this and believe that some kind of tourist attractions will be created in space, although they will be affordable only for wealthy people.

1.Why will there be only English, Spanish and Chinese according to the passage?

A. Because other languages won’t be important.

B. Because people who speak minority languages won’t be willing to speak their native languages.

C. Because more and more educated people speak English, Spanish and Chinese, which will cause many minority languages extinct

D. Because in the whole world all the people must not speak other languages.

2.What currency can we use to buy goods in the future from the passage?

A. local currency B. metal currency

C. national currency D. global electronic currency

It just may be the world’s most costly vacuum cleaner (吸尘器). The price of CleanSpace One is eleven million dollars. But yet, it has a big job to do. Recently, researchers in Switzerland said they planned to build this new cleaning machine.

CleanSpace One will not be for use in homes or businesses. It will be shot into space to help remove thousands of pieces of space junk floating around up there.

Last year, we reported on the problem of space junk. Over time, many unused spacecraft have hit each other far above the Earth. Big pieces break into thousands of small pieces. Sometimes they fall back into the atmosphere (大气层) and burn up. But when they do not, it creates big problems.

Scientists fear that if something is not done to remove these objects, it may soon become too dangerous to send people and machines into space. There is a large chance that they might hit some of this junk. So that is why the Swiss researchers are developing the new machine.

CleanSpace One is not really a vacuum cleaner. It will not be used to take away space junk. But scientists plan to move it close to an old satellite that is no longer being used. Then a claw-like instrument will catch the satellite, and force it back through the atmosphere. There, the satellite will be destroyed by the heat of friction (摩擦) with the air.

Researchers say that all they need to do is slow down the speed of some of these unwanted objects. Once they begin to move more slowly, they will fall back to the Earth. There is little chance that they will fall through the atmosphere and harm the people or things below.

1.Space junk is created when ____________.

A. unused spacecraft hit each other

B. people in space throw away rubbish

C. a new spaceship is sent up

D. an old spaceship creates friction with the air

2.What’s the danger of space junk?

A. It will pollute space. B. It will hurt people on the Earth.

C. It will hit a spaceship. D. It will burn in the atmosphere.

3.Unwanted objects will fall back to the Earth when _______ .

A. they are made to move slowly B. they meet other objects in space

C. they are not used for years D. they are near the atmosphere

He was the man who inspired the Beat Generation, and nearly half a century after his death Jack Kerouac is still receiving grateful letters from his fans.

Most letters are sent in the post to his last home in St Petersburg, Florida, and the mail box in the front yard is full to bursting. But others are delivered by hand, pushed under the front door or left on the doorstep.

They usually thank the author of On the Road for inspiring them to travel and be independent. “You remind me to stay true to who you are and to encourage a sense of adventure in all of us.” reads one letter, handwritten by “Cindy” on paper covered with pictures of butterflies and flowers. She adds, “I hope you’re writing, liberated and drinking a glass of wine.”

Another, signed “Friend of Jack”, reads, “I prefer to think of myself as a free spirit and a person who follows a path of her own choosing. You have always been my inspiration.”

His home, where he was living with his mother Gabrielle and his wife Stella, has become a destination for hundreds of fans every year.

Kerouac rocketed to fame at the age of 35, with the publication of On the Road in 1957.

But after becoming a symbol and leader of the alternative lifestyle movement, he struggled with that fame and claimed that he only wanted people to read his books.

Kerouac died just 12 years after On the Road was published. He was suffering from liver problem, following years of heavy drinking largely brought on by his love-hate relationship with fame.

Kerouac, the creator of vivid characters such as Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty, died at a St Petersburg hospital in 1969, at the age of 47.

1.Why do people still write to Kerouac after his death?
