    My name is Jake. I’m brown, and rather short, standing just a little past my master’s knees. My friend Andy once took me to a dog show. I’ve never seen so many different-looking dogs in my life! They all looked pretty and handsome, and their masters were very proud of them when they jumped and ran across so many barriers at that dog show. Andy promised that he’d let me join a dog show, too, if the organizers opened a division for my “breed”.

    While I was watching that show, I remembered my friends at the pound（走失猫狗的待领处）, where I spent two long weeks. We were kept in cages, and although we were well-fed, every day during those two weeks, I hoped to have someone touch my head and play with me.

    You could just imagine how glad I was when, one day, Andy came in with his dad and pointed in my direction. I stood up on my hind legs and did a little jig （一种快步舞）, and then I wagged my tail and tried to chase it. The father and his son kept laughing at what I was trying to do, and in a few minutes, I was riding on their car on the way to my new home. I was Mr. Archer’s gift for Andy’s eighth birthday. I heard him shout that I was the best gift ever!

    My favorite amusement is hanging my tongue out of the car window and letting the wind blow on my face. I just love long drives! It is during these times that I think of all my friends whom I left behind at the dog pound. I hope that soon, little boys or girls would also pick them and give them new homes, so they would be able to enjoy walks in the park and trips to the beach, as I do now.

    13．Flying
    Ever since I was old enough to dream，I have imagined myself soaring with the eagles．My love of flying has shaped the way I live and the person I have become．Two years ago，that passion rocketed to new heights when I had the opportunity to visit Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Arizona．For a whole week I lived in a college dorm，roomed with a total stranger and---best of all---I flew!
    My group took part in activities ranging from learning about the history of aviation （航空） to flying in state-of-the-art pilot training simulators （模拟装置）．At least once a day，I devoted myself to learning one of the world's best training aircrafts，the Cessna 182．Not only did I receive thorough ground instruction，but I also got to fly．In total，I flew five hours to receive my private pilot's license．
    In that one joyous and oh-so-short week，my passion for aviation grew even stronger．Now，
    whenever I see a plane flying overhead，I feel a sense of pride thinking I've done that．
    During my time in and above the Arizona desert，I learned not only about the mechanics and
    techniques of aviation，but also about myself and how I see the world．As I floated in that seemingly endless sea of air，I became aware of the variety and complexity of the humanity below．On the ribbons of roadways，each tiny car carried people with hopes and dreams．I wondered if any of those people had ever wished to fly like an eagle．Then I realized that each must have his or her own dreams and ambitions．That's what makes us unique．We try to respond to something special inside us．I also realized that I was especially fortunate to be making my own dream come true．
    Everywhere I go，I hear，"Do what makes you happy and you will be happy．"It sounds like
    standard advice，but I've really thought about it and taken it to heart．I couldn't care less about how much money I make or what benefits I receive．I know that I am already in hot pursuit（追逐） of my dreams．And，even if they change，even if they finally don't involve aviation，I'll always aim to fly with the eagles．

    Born in 1949, Diana Nyad took an early interest in swimming as a sport and was a Florida State High School swimming champion. Like many young athletes, she had Olympic dreams, but a serious illness kept her from competing in the Games. The disappointment didn’t stop her from going forward. Instead, she became interested in marathon swimming. A brilliant athlete, she was well-conditioned for spending long periods of time in the water. As a long-distance swimmer, she would compete against herself and the obstacles presented by distance, danger, cold, and exhaustion.

    For ten years Nyad devoted herself to becoming one of the world’s best long-distance swimmers. In 1970, she swam a ten-mile marathon in Lake Ontario, setting the women’s record for the course. In 1972 she set another record by swimming 102.5 miles from an island in the Bahamas to the coast of Florida. Then she broke a third record when swimming around Manhattan Island in 1975.

    Nyad attempted to swim the distance between Florida and Cuba in 1978. Though the span of water is less than 100 miles wide, it is rough and dangerous. After battling the water for two days, she had to give for the sake of her own health and safety. Even so, she impressed the world with her courage and strong desire to succeed. For Nyad her strength of purpose was just as important as reading Cuba. That is how she defined success. It did not matter that her swim came up short; she believed she had touched the other shore.

    When Nyad ended her career as a swimmer, she continued to try new things---travelling the world as a reporter, writing books and giving public speeches about her life. Diana Nyad works to inspire others, just as she did when she swam the waters of the world.
