A team from Paris High School in Texas won the past weekend's Ford/AAA Auto Skills Challenge.
The goal of the yearly competition is to accurately repair a car that has been disabled on purpose:
Responding to the call, "Gentlemen, start your engines, if you can" at 9:15 a.m., the teams ran to 50
cars with the same mechanical problems. They had 90 minutes to find and repair many "bugs" in the
starting, electrical, lighting, braking, temperature control, and power systems. The team from Texas
first drove their car across the finish line, winning the contest after judges determined that they had
removed all of the bugs.
Bradley J. Bolton and Aaron Clay were able to get their car started in less than 30 minutes. In feet,
the pair from Texas spent months preparing for the competition with, their instructor. They walked
away with $2,500 in scholarships and something interesting to add to their resumes (履历). With many
regional competitions, Ford and AAA gave away a total of $6 million in prizes and scholarships to this
year's competitors.
"Aaron and Bradley proved today that they are America's best teen auto-repair team," Allan Stanley,
manager of Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills, said. "Their hard work and drive to be the top high school
auto technicians are typical of every participant here. The auto industry must attract such talented young
people to keep America's vehicles operating safely."
Each year, the Student Auto Skills competition determines the nation's best high school auto technicians
with a two-part test. After a written exam worth 40% of their grade, the 50 two-person teams-each
representing a state-compete in hands-on repair work, which is worth 60% of their total.
Darryl Hazel, senior president of Ford Motor Company, said, "Ford and its dealer (经销商) network
are offering these talented young people opportunities to train for high-tech careers with excellent wages."

Few Americans stay in one a place for a lifetime. We move from the city to the suburbs (郊区), from
high school to college in a different state, from a job in one area to a better job elsewhere, from the home
where we raise our children to the home where we plan to live in retirement. With each move we are forever
making new friends, who become part of our new life.
For many of us the summer is a special time for forming new friendships. Today, millions of Americans
go on vacation abroad, and we go not only to see new sights but also in those places where we don't feel too
strange with the hope of meeting new people. No one really expects a vacation trip to produce a close friend,
but the beginning of a friendship is possible. Surely in every country people value friendship.
The word "friend" to American people can be applied to a wide range of relationships-to someone one has
known for a few weeks in a new place, to a close business companion, to a childhood playmate, to a man or
a woman, or to a trusted colleague. There are real differences among these relations for Americans a friendship
may be shallow, casual, situational or deep and lasting. But to a European, who sees only our surface behavior,
the differences are not clear.
As Europeans see it, all kinds of "friends" flow in and out of Americans' homes with little ceremony. They
may be parents of the children's friends, house guests of neighbors, members of a committee, business
associates from another town or even another country. Coming as a guest into an American home, the
European visitor finds no obvious landmarks. The atmosphere is relaxed. Most people, old and young, are called
by first names. Americans' characteristic openness to different styles of relationship makes it possible for us to
find new friends abroad with whom we feel at home.

All over the world people enjoy sports; sports help to keep people healthy and happy, and to live
longer.
Many people like to watch others play games. They buy tickets or turn on their TVs to watch the
games. Often they get very excited when "their" player or team wins.

There're five people at our table, including myself. I've already learnt a great deal about them in the
short time we've been at sea, although we rarely meet except at meal times.
First of all, there's Dr Stone. He's a man of about sixty five, with gray hair and a friendly face. He
gave up his work a short while ago and is now traveling round the world before he retires to some quiet
country village. As a young man, he served for many years as a doctor in the Army and visited many
countries. He's told us a lot about the city to which we are going.
Then there's "Grandmother". I call her that because her name escapes me. In spite of being a
grandmother, she looks rather young, not more than fifty, She's on her way to visit a daughter who went
to Australia some years ago. Naturally she is very excited at the thought of seeing her again, and her
three grandchildren, whom she has never seen.
Then there's a man I don't care for very much, an engineer by the name of Barlow. He has been on
leave in England and is now returning to his work in Singapore.
The other person who sits at our table is Mrs. Hunt. I've found out hardly anything about her. She's
extremely quiet and rarely talks, except to consult (咨询) the doctor about children's various illness.
She's on her way to join her husband in India.

Teachers spend countless years trying to make history come alive for their students. However, US Director
Shawn Levy tries to do this on film in the recently released (发行) Night at the Museum.
The film is adapted from Milan Trenc's book of the same name. It brings to life a world where dinosaurs
wander the earth, a former president rides again, warlike early Asians return, and cowboys and Roman soldiers
seek to bring back their old goals.
The familiar comedy star Ben Stiller acts as a luckless dreamer named Larry Daley. He takes a position(职
位) as night watchman at the New York Museum of Natural History.
On Larry's first night, he's left alone by the three aging guards he's replacing. They fail to inform him of
the museum's rather unusual nightlife.
Soon Larry finds himself chased(追逐) down the hallways by the very lively skeleton(骨架, 骷髅) of a
dinosaur, in the middle of a confrontation(交锋) with Asian warriors. He is caught in a battle between a
cowboy and a Roman general and meets face-to-face with former US president Teddy Roosevelt, played by
Robin Williams.
They are each from an exhibit that has come to life through the magic of a priceless Egyptian tablet(药
片).
While the film fails to develop very much in some areas (for example, Larry's troubled relationship with a
son), it does have enough special effects, and jokes to amuse the audience.
Bottom Line: Definitely not Oscar-worthy, but a great way to relax during a holiday.
1.The purpose of this passage is to ________.
A. introduce a book called Night at the Museum
B. introduce a movie called Night at the Museum
C. made known a US director Shawn Levy
D. make students learn history easier
2. We can know from the first paragraph that _________.
A. teachers don't do well in their jobs
B. a director can do a better job than teachers
C. people can learn some history through a film
D. all history classes should be stopped
3. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. The film has the same name as the book.
B. Larry Daley is a character in the film.
C. Teddy Roosevelt was once a US president.
D. All magic Egyptian tablets are on exhibition.
4. On Larry's first night in the film, ________.
A. three aging guards are involved in a battle
B. he doesn't know the unusual nightlife beforehand(预先)

In a natural disaster-a hurricane, flood, volcanic eruption, or other catastrophes-minutes and even
seconds of warning can make the difference between life and death.Because of this, scientists are
working to use the latest technological advances to predict when and where disasters will happen. They
are also studying how best to analyze and communicate this information once it is obtained.
On September 29, 1998, Hurricane Georges made landfall in Biloxi, Mississippi, after damaging Haiti,
the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and several islands of the Caribbean badly with torrential rains and
winds up to 160 km per hour.Few people lost their lives along the Gulf Coast of the United States, although
hundreds died in the Caribbean.
This was a very different outcome from 1900, when a powerful Gulf Coast hurricane made an
unexpected direct hit on Galveston, Texas, killing at least 6,000 people.
Vastly improved hurricane warnings explain the different circumstances at either end of the 20th
century--residents of Galveston had no advance warning that a storm was approaching, while residents
of Biloxi had been warned days in advance, allowing for extensive safety precautions (预防).
At the same time that people in Biloxi were thankful for the advance warning, some residents of New
Orleans, Louisiana were less satisfied. A day before Georges made landfall, forecasters were predicting that
the hurricane had a good chance of striking New Orleans.Because much of New Orleans lies below sea
level, the city is at risk for flooding.Emergency management officials must begin evacuations (疏散) well
before a storm strikes. But evacuation costs money: businesses close, tourists leave, and citizens take
precautionary measures. The mayor of New Orleans estimated that his city' s preparations for Georges
cost more than 50 million. After Georges missed New Orleans, some residents questioned the value of the
hurricane forecasts in the face of such high costs.
The different views on the early warnings for Hurricane Georges show some of the complexities related
to predicting disasters. Disaster prediction is a process of providing scientific information to the government
officials and other decision makers who must respond to those predictions.
1. What is the purpose of disaster prediction according to the passage?
A. To identify the cause of disasters.
B. To save people' s lives and property.
C. To prevent natural disasters from happening,
D. To apply advanced technology to disaster prediction.
2. Which of the following areas suffered the most severe damage?
A. Puerto Rico.
B. New Orleans.
C. Biloxi, Mississippi.
D. Galveston, Texas.
3. The city residents of New Orleans were unsatisfied because ___.
A. their preparations were made in vain
B. the hurricane warning arrived rather late
C. the forecast hurricane did not hit the city
D. they suffered from a heavy hurricane attack
4. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. The different ways of disaster prediction.
B. Technological advances in disaster prediction.
C. The benefits and preparations of disaster prediction.
D. The importance and uncertainty of disaster prediction.

We all remember seeing hitchhikers, standing by the side of the road, thumb sticking out, waiting for a
lift. But it is getting rare nowadays. What killed hitchhiking? Safety is often mentioned as a reason. Movies
about murderous hitchhikers and real-life crime have put many drivers off picking up hitchhikers. That no
single women picked me up on my journey to Manchester no doubt reflects the safety fear: a large, strangely
dressed man is seen as dangerous.
But the reason may be more complex: hitchhiking happens where people don't have cars and transport
services are poor. Plenty of people still hitchhike in Poland and Romania. Perhaps the rising level of car
ownership in the UK means the few people left hitchhiking are usually considered strange. Why can't they
afford cars? Why can't they take the coach or the train?
Three-quarters of the UK population have access to a car; many of the remainder will be quite old. The
potential hitchhiking population is therefore small. Yet my trip proves it's still possible to hitchhike. The
people who picked me up were very interesting-lawyer, retired surgeon, tank commander, carpenter, man
who lived in an isolated farmhouse and a couple living up in the mountains. My conclusion is that only really
interesting people are mad enough to pick up fat blokes in red, spotted scarves. Most just wanted to do
someone a good turn; a few said they were so surprised to see a hitchhiker that they couldn't help stopping.
The future of hitchhiking most likely lies with car-sharing organised over the Internet, via sites such as
hitchhikers, org. But for now, you can still stick your thumb out (actually, I didn't do much of that, preferring
just to hold up my destination sign) and people-wonderful, caring, sharing, unafraid people-will stop.
In the UK, with its cheap coaches and reasonable rail service, I don't think I'll make a habit of it. But having
enjoyed it so much, I'm ready now to do a big trip across Europe and beyond. In the 1970s a female friend of
my wife's hitchhiked to India. How wonderful it would be to have another go, though Afghanistan might be a
challenge. I wish I'd got that tank commander's mobile number.
1. The author tried to hitchhike but was rejected by single women drivers because _____.
A. they were not heading towards Manchester
B. they thought most hitchhikers were dangerous
C. hitchhiking had been banned and they didn't want to break the law
D. he was a strong man in strange clothes who seemed dangerous
2. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Movies have discouraged people from hitchhiking.
B. Car ownership levels are lower in Romania than in the UK.
C. 25% of UK people don't have access to cars.
D. Increased car ownership has reduced the need for hitchhiking.
3. The "fat blokes in red, spotted scarves" in Paragraph 3 most likely means _____.
A. murderous hitchhikers
B. friendly and talkative hitchhikers
C. typical hitchhikers
D. strange hitchhikers like the author
4. According to the author, future hitchhikers are more likely to _____.
A. visit websites and find people to share cars with
B. stand by roads with their thumbs sticking out
C. stick out signs with their destinations written on
D. wait for some kind people to pick them up
5. From the last paragraph, we know that the author _____.
A. frequently hitchhikes in Britain
B. plans m hitchhike across Europe
C. thinks public transport is safer for travel
D. is going to contact the tank commander

If you and your friends wish to share a secret, you can write it in code (编码), and no one else will be
able to read it.
Codes are one way of writing in secret. Ciphers (暗码) are another. In a code each word is written as a
secret code word or code number. In a cipher each letter is changed. Codes and ciphers have played an
important role in the history of the world. Julius Caesar, the Roman ruler who defeated almost all the countries
in Europe about 2, 000 years ago, used a cipher when he sent secret messages to his troops. During the
American Revolution, George Washington's spies used a kind of code to send him information about the enemy
before his military (军事的) action. In World War Ⅱ, the Americans "broke", or figured out, Japan's most
important navy codes and got enough information to destroy a powerful Japanese fleet( 舰队).
Storekeepers use codes to mark their goods. The codes show how much was paid for the goods or when
they were added to the stock (商品). Businessmen use codes to hide plans from their business enemies.
Sometimes personal letters or diaries are written in code. Many people enjoy figuring out codes and ciphers
simply as a hobby.
In the 16th century, codes and ciphers were very popular among scientists. They wrote messages to each
other in code so that no one else would learn their secrets. Geronimo Gardano, an Italian astrologer (星相家),
mathematician, and doctor, invented the trellis cipher. He took two sheets of paper and cut exactly the same
holes in each one. Then he sent one sheet, which he called a trellis, to a friend and kept the other for himself.
Whenever he wanted to write a message, he put his trellis over a clean sheet of paper and wrote the secret
message through the holes. Then he removed the trellis and filled the rest of the paper with words that would
make sense. When his friend received it, he put his trellis over the writing and read the secret message.

1. The best title of this passage would be _______.
A. Codes and Ciphers
B. Differences between Codes and Ciphers
C. History of Codes and Ciphers
D. Inventors of Codes and Ciphers
2. Which of the following statements is true?
A. Ciphers can be broken or figured out more easily than codes.
B. You could read some words in Geronimo's letter without his trellis.
C. The first person who ever used a cipher in history was Julius Caesar.
D. Fondness of using codes was the hobby of the scientists in the 16th century.
3. According to Geronimo Cardano, a trellis is _______.
A. a piece of paper with many small holes
B. a secret message with a lot of small holes
C. a letter with unreadable words and sentences
D. a sheet of paper with groups of Arabic figures
4. It is NOT mentioned in the passage that codes and ciphers are used for the purpose of _______.
A. military affairs
B. commercial secrets
C. scientific achievements
D. personal enjoyment
