    8．Thomas Jefferson，the third president of the United States，was a good and tireless writer，and he wrote The Declaration of Independence．There is much we can learn from him．Here are some of the things he said and wrote：
    Go and see．Jefferson believed that a free man obtains knowledge from many sources besides books，and personal investigation is important as well．
    Judge for yourself．Jefferson refused to accept other people's opinions without careful thought．"Neither believe nor reject anything，"he wrote to his nephew．
    Learn from everyone．Jefferson once visited the French nobleman，Lafayette，and said to him，"You must go into the people's home as I have done，look into their cooking pots and eat their bread．If you will only do this，you may find out why people are dissatisfied．"
    Do what you believe is right．In a free country，there will always be conflicting ideas，and this is a source of strength．It is not unquestioning agreement but conflict that keeps freedom alive．Though Jefferson was for many years the object of strong criticism，he never answered his critics．He expressed his philosophy，"There are two sides to every question．If you take one side with decision and act on it with effect，those who take the other side will of course resent（憎恶）your actions．"
    Trust the future and trust the young．Jefferson felt that the present should never be chained to customs which have lost their usefulness．"The earth belongs to the living generation．"He didn't fear new ideas，nor did he fear the future．"How much pain has been caused by evils which have never happened？"he remarked，"I expect the best，not the worst．"

    5．Henry Edwards Huntington
    Henry Edwards Huntington was born in 1850in Oneonta，New York．In 1872he went to work for his uncle，one of the owners of the Central Pacific Railroad．Twenty years later，Huntington moved to San Francisco at his uncle's request to share management of the Southern Pacific Railroad．On the way to San Francisco，he visited San Marino，and later bought it，which is home to his collections today．
    In 1902，Huntington moved his business operations to Los Angeles，where he developed the street railway system that created the structure of the Los Angeles area．He greatly expanded the existing electric railway lines，creating an extensive inter-urban system providing the transportation necessary．Huntington's business interests continued to grow particularly in the areas of water，power，and land development； at one time he served on as many as 60corporate boards throughout the United States．
    At the age of 60，he announced his decision to retire in order to devote time to his book and art collections and the landscaping of the 600-acre farm．In 1911the large Beaux Arts building，in the charge of the architect Myron Hunt，was completed．
    In 1913，Huntington married Arabella Duval Huntington．She shared his interests in collecting．As one of the most important art collectors of her generation，she was highly influential in the development of the art collection now shown in the former building．
    In 1919，Henry and Arabella Huntington signed the agreement that conveyed their San Marino property and collections to a nonprofit educational trust，creating the Huntington，one of the world's great cultural，research，and educational centers．
    Henry E．Huntington died in 1927，leaving his great treasures the Huntington，including the world-famous Huntington Library，Art Gallery，and Botanical Gardens in San Marino，California to the public，which hosts more than 500，000 visitors each year．

    Mr．Miyazaki's latest work has been met with some controversy in Japan and in Republic of Korea．The Wind Rises is a fictional account on the life of JiroHorikoshi，the engineer who designed the Mitsubishi A6M Zero，a fighter plane used in the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941．Some Japanese conservatives have criticized Mr．Miyazaki for the film's antiwar attitude，while some Internet users in Republic of Korea have accused him of romanticizing（使浪漫） the inventor of a plane that became a symbol for the Japanese military during World War II．
    The controversy，however，doesn't change the fact that Mr．Miyazaki is one of the most famous figures in animated filmmaking．
    The72-year-old has directed 11animated features over 34years，including the international hits My Neighbor Totoro，Princess Mononoke，Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle．
    In the age of digital animation，Mr．Miyazaki has remained faithful to the hand-drawn technique．His movies，known for their entertaining plots，convincing characters and wonderful animation，won him critical praise as well as public recognition．In 2003，Mr．Miyazaki won an Oscar for best animated feature for Spirited Away，and he was awarded a Golden Lion for lifetime achievement at the Venice Film Festival in 2005．
    It's doubtless a shame if animation lovers will really see no more new works from the legend．May his announced retirement be a brief，dark impulse（冲动）．May he go on attracting movie fans for years to come．
