With petroleum reserves (石油储量) decreasing, the search is on to replace gas with a cleaner, greener alternative. Though much eco-talk has centered on biofuels from corn and soybeans, the biofuel that looks more likely to replace petroleum comes from a most unlikely source: algae(藻类).

Algae, like corn, soybeans, and other crops, grow via photosynthesis(光合作用) and can be processed into fuel oil. However, they yield 30 times more energy than land crops such as soybeans, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Many algae species also can grow in saltwater and polluted water—while corn and soy require arable land and fresh water that will be in short supply as the world's population balloons.

“If you replaced all the diesel(柴油) in the U.S. with soy biodiesel, it would take half the land mass of the U.S. to grow those soybeans,” says Matt Caspari, chief executive of Aurora Biofuels, a Berkeley, Calif-based private firm that specializes in algae oil technology. On the other hand, the Energy Department says that if algae fuel replaced all the petroleum fuel in the United States, it would require 15,000 square miles, which is a few thousand miles larger than Maryland (12,407 square miles), the 42nd state in land area.

Another bonus: Because algae can be grown just about anywhere in a closed space, they're being tested at several power plants across the nation as a carbon absorber. Smokestack emissions (烟囱排放物) can be pumped directly into the ponds, feeding the algae while keeping greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere.

Although processing technology for algae fuel-also known as “oilgae” in some environmentalist circles—is improving, it's still years away from reaching your local gas pump. “It's just a question of cost, because no large-scale facilities have been built yet,” Caspari says.

1. The underlined word “yield” in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by ________.

A. control         B. require

C. produce         D. grow

2. Compared with corn and soybeans, algae________.

A. may pollute water and soil

B. can grow in poor conditions

C. provide much less energy

D. need more special care

3. According to Paragraph 3, one of the advantages of algae fuel is that________.

A. it can be used more widely

B. it is more easy to produce

C. it needs much less land

D. it costs much less money

4. What do we learn about algae from Paragraph 4?

A. Algae help protect the environment.

B. People can grow algae anywhere.

C. Fish can get more oxygen from algae.

D. Algae produce less waste.

5. What does the passage mainly talk about?

A. Environmental protection.

B. Biofuels from corn and soybeans.

C. The false hope of biofuels.

D. A promising oil alternative.

Nuclear radiation from power plant leaks and bomb tests resulted in millions of fewer baby girls
born worldwide, according to a new study.
Scientists noted these types of atmospheric blasts rather than ontheground incidents like Chernobyl
(切尔诺贝利), effected birth gender across the globe.
Scientists at Helmholtz Zentrum M?nchen, Germany, analysed population data from 1975 to 2007
for the U.S. and 39 European countries.
There was an increase in the number of baby boys relative to girls in all of the countries from 1964
to 1975. This was the case in many eastern European countries for several years after 1986.
Scientists are putting the first spike down to the atomic bomb tests of the 1960s and 1970s where
radioactive atoms were blasted into the atmosphere. Air currents caught these atoms and then distributed
them around the world.
They think the second spike is due to the 1986 Chernobyl disaster in which the reactor exploded in
the Ukraine(乌克兰).
The effects of Chernobyl were felt locally and no effect was seen in the U.S., probably because it
was too far from the disaster to have an effect.
"The closer the country was to Chernobyl, the stronger the effect," said study coauthor Hagen Scherb, a biostatistician(生物统计学家) at the German Research Center for Environmental Health in Munich.
More males were born relative to females in Belarus-the Ukraine's neighbour-than in France.
The study is based largely on Cold Warera statistics, but the findings are highly relevant for how
gender could be affected after future nuclear disasters.
And in the wake of Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident experts are predicting
another baby boy boom could come, especially on the U.S. West Coast.
Previous radiation experiments on animals may give a clue for the increase in male births. Tests showed that radiation caused damage to the X chromosome(染色体) in sperm, Dr Scherb said.
A human sperm cell contains either an X or Y chromosome, while an egg only has an X chromosome. An XY combination will become a boy, while an XX combination will be a girl.
1.How many nuclear radiation accidents are mentioned in the passage?
A.1.
B.2.
C.3.
D.4.
2.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.The ontheground incidents like Chernobyl, effected birth gender across the globe.
B.There was an increase in the number of baby boys in many eastern European countries for several
years after 1986.
C.The Japan's nuclear accident will not effect the birth gender of the U.S. because of the long distance.
D.Where radioactive material has spread, women can't give birth to children.
3.How does radiation effect birth gender?
A.It damages the Y chromosome in sperm.
B.It stops X chromosomes and Y chromosomes combining.
C.It kills baby girls before they are born.
D.It damages the X chromosome in sperm.
4.What does the passage mainly tell us?
A.Nuclear age has led to millions of fewer baby girls being born.
B.Nuclear radiation has bad effects upon people's health.
C.Worries about radiation risks.
D.Nuclear age helps reduce the world population.

Some individuals and citizen groups have expressed worry about the level of violence in television programs, particularly in action-adventure series and cartoons. They argue that viewers, especially children, may learn to see violence as the only way to settle conflicts.

Early experimental researchers compared the play of children who had seen aggressive behavior on television with the play of a control group of children who had watched nonviolent programs.Worry was increased by findings that showed a higher level of aggressive play in the violent-television group.Other researchers attempted to determine whether violent programs simply caused higher energy levels in children or actually caused them to learn violent and antisocial behavior. The results of different studies conflicted. Some researchers thought that televised violence actually had an active cathartic(引导宣泄) effect, allowing some viewers to release high tensions; these findings, however, were not more clear in further studies.Other scholars pointed out that both prosocial and antisocial behavior can be learned from television.

Social scientists find it especially difficult to figure out exactly the subtle (细微的),cumulative(积累的) effects of viewing a broad variety of television programs throughout childhood.Telling the possible effects of television from other influences at home and at school is also difficult.Present research suggests that higher levels of antisocial behavior can result from television viewing, but further study needs to be done to make it clear or not.

Because of the long-standing tradition in the U.S.of freedom of speech and of the press, the government would probably not attempt to directly limit or censor(审查) the appearance of violence on television.Among the networks and producer, pressure from some citizens continues to be balanced by increasing popularity of high-energy action- adventure programs.

B.that meets the expectation of the society
