“Image is everything.” An entire industry has been built upon the precondition that image is everything, but when it comes down to it, an appealing image is not enough. If there is no substance(物质) behind the image, the product, service or person will fail at length.

First of all, one should consider how important image is in the selling of products and services. Advertising agencies have raised the art of creating an image to a state of near perfection. Public concept of that product or service is certainly managed by the images created by the advertising agencies. But if the product or service does not live up to the image that was created, the customer will be very dissatisfied and possibly ask for their money back. For example, the Arthur Andersen accounting firm had spent decades building up an image of trustworthiness. But the recent scandal (丑闻) showed that behind that image, it had dishonest business practices. Despite the previous positive image, the firm is being accused of criminal actions and it will probably not survive as a business unit. Although the image had been nearly perfect, the reality behind the image has led to the downfall of the world famous accounting firm.
Similarly, personal consultants can build up a public image for politicians and movie stars. Putting out positive news releases, making sure that only the best photographs are published, and ensuring that the person is seen in all the right places can build up a very positive image in the view of the general commons. But once again, history is filled with examples of both politicians and movie stars that fell from grace(体面) like the story of the Hollywood actor giving in to the pressures of fame and fortune. With people, just as with products and services, image is certainly important, but without positive substance behind the image, failure is close.
To summarize, it is clear that an appealing image is extremely important to success, whether that image is related to selling a product or service or to the “selling” of a person. But image is only half of the equation. What lies behind that image is every bit as important as the image itself —— the person or product must deliver on that image or there is little chance for long-term success.

When a dirty and untidy orange cat showed up in the prison yard,I was one of the first to go out there and pet it.I hadn’t touched a cat or a dog in over 20 years.I spent at least 20 minutes, knelt down behind the kitchen as the cat rolled around, relaxed. What he was expressing outwardly, I was feeling inwardly. It was an amazing bit of grace to feel him under my hand and note that I was reaching a life or another creature with something as simple as my care.

Over the next few days, there were other prisoners responding to the cat.Every yard period,a group of prisoners gathered there. They stood around talking and taking turns petting the cat. These were guys you wouldn’t usually find talking to each other.Several times I saw an officer in the group, not chasing people away, but just watching and seeming to enjoy along with the prisoners.Bowls of milk and water appeared along with bread, wisely placed under the edge of the dustbin to keep the birds from getting it.

The cat was obviously homeless and in pretty bad shape.People said that the cat came to the right place. He's getting treated like a king. This was true.but as I watched I was also thinking about what the cat was doing for us.There was a lot of talk about what's wrong with prisons in America. We need more programs. We need more psychologists or treatment of various kinds. Some may even talk about making prisons more kind. But I think what we really need is a chance to practise our own kindness. Not receive it,but give it.After more than two decades here,I know kindness is not a value that's encouraged. It's often seen as a weakness.

Instead, the culture encourages keeping your head down, minding your own business, and never letting yourself be weak.

The cat did my heart good to see the effect he had on me and the men here.By simply saying,”I need some help here”,he did something important for us.He needed us.And we needed to be needed.I believe we all do.

1.Which of the following statements is true?

A.The cat was dirty because it was kept in prison.

B.The officer in the prison enjoyed petting the cat.

C.The prisoners prepared food for both the cat and birds.

D.The author realized the importance of practising kindness.

2.We can infer from the third paragraph that______

A.showing love to others can make prisoners strong

B.the American prison culture will be improved

C.the author is not content with the prison culture

D.caring for others is encouraged in American prisons

3.What is the best title for the passage?

A.Caring Makes US Human.        B.Prison Culture is Important.

C.Animals Need Care.             D.Everyone Needs to be Cared for.

4.In Paragraph 2,the author mentioned that "Several times I saw an officer in the Group, not chasing people away, but just watching and seeming to enjoy along with the prisoners." to______ .

A.show us the officer and prisoners get along well with each other

B.show us the American prison culture does need improvement

C.show us the officer and prisoners all like cat

Several recent studies have found that being randomly (随机地) assigned to a roommate of another race can lead to increased tolerance but also to a greater likelihood (可能性)of conflict.

Recent reports found that lodging with a student of a different race may decrease prejudice and cause students to engage in more ethnically diverse friendships.

An Ohio State University study also found that black students living with a white roommate saw higher academic success throughout their college careers. Researchers believe this may be caused by social pressure.

In a New York Times article, Sam Boakye – the only black student on his freshman year floor -said that "if you're surrounded by whites, you have something to prove."

Researchers also observed problems resulting from pairing interracial students in residences.

According to two recent studies, randomly assigned roommates of different races are more likely to experience conflicts so strained that one roommate will move out.

An Indiana University study found that interracial roommates were three times as likely as two white roommates to no longer live together by the end of the semester.

Grace Kao, a professor at Penn said she was not surprised by the findings. "This may be the first time that some of these students have interacted, and lived, with someone of a different race," she said.

At Penn, students are not asked to indicate race when applying for housing.

"One of the great things about freshman housing is that, with some exceptions, the process throws you together randomly," said Undergraduate Assembly chairman Alec Webley. "This is the definition of integration."

"I've experienced roommate conflicts between interracial students that have both broken down stereotypes(老一套,模式) and reinforced stereotypes," said one Penn resident advisor (RA). The RA of two years added that while some conflicts "provided more multicultural acceptance and melding (融合)," there were also "jarring(不和谐的)cultural confrontations(对抗)."

The RA said that these conflicts have also occurred among roommates of the same race.

Kao said she cautions against forming any generalizations based on any one of the studies, noting that more background characteristics of the students need to be studied and explained.

1.What can we learn from some recent studies?

A.Conflicts between students of different races are unavoidable.

B.Students of different races are prejudiced against each other.

C.Interracial lodging does more harm than good.

D.Interracial lodging may have diverse outcomes.

2.What does Sam Boakye's remark mean?

A.White students tend to look down upon their black peers.

B.Black students can compete with their white peers academically.

C.Black students feel somewhat embarrassed among white peers during the freshman year.

D.Being surrounded by white peers motivates a black student to work harder to succeed.

3.What does the Indiana University study show?

A.Interracial roommates are more likely to fall out.

B.Few white students like sharing a room with a black peer.

C.Roommates of different races just don't get along.

D.Assigning students' lodging randomly is not a good policy.

4.What does Alec Webley consider to be the "definition of integration"?

A.Students of different races are required to share a room.

B.Interracial lodging is arranged by the school for freshmen.

C.Lodging is assigned to students of different races without exception.

D.The school randomly assigns roommates without regard to race.

5.What does Grace Kao say about interracial lodging?

A.It is unscientific to make generalizations about it without further study.

B.Schools should be cautious when making decisions about student lodging.

C.Students' racial background should be considered before lodging is assigned.

D.Experienced resident advisors should be assigned to handle the problems.
