La Gomera is the only place in the world that has a whistle(口哨) language. We do not know how and why it began because we do not know the complete history of the island. But we can certainly imagine the reasons for the beginning of the whistle language. There are many deep valleys on the island. A person on one side of a valley can not easily shout to a person on the other side. But he can whistle and be heard. Some of the best whistlers can be heard from four miles away and the record is seven miles.

The people who live on the island usually have good teeth, and this helps them to whistle well. They must also have good ears so that they can hear other whistlers.

We can understand why the whistle language continues. It is very useful on the island, and quite easy to learn. When somebody is hurt or ill, the whistle language takes the place of telephone. If the sick person is quite far away from the town, people pass the message from one to another. A boy guarding cattle on a hillside whistles to a man fishing from his boat. The last one is able to describe the trouble fully and exactly to the doctor in town. People help one another in the same way when a car breaks down or a cow is lost.

The whistle language is hundreds of years old, and probably it will continue to live on for hundreds of years more. Radio and TV often kill the special ways of speaking in different parts of a country. But on La Gomera you are nobody if you cannot whistle. Perhaps soon after TV arrives on the island, people there will be whistling the news and other facts and opinions.

It never occurred to anybody, not even the creators that the world would care about the complex lives, loves and sufferings of a group of attractive and witty New Yorkers. But there’s no doubt that Friends(老友记)has become more than just a successful situation comedy—it has established itself as one of the last great television phenomena of the last century. Along the way, it has made its half-dozen leading actors famous.

Looking back on the strong friendship between the group of three men and three women who frequently gather at each other’s apartments and at Greenwich Village’s Central Perk coffee house, Friends was created by television producers, David Crane and Marta Kauffman. In 1993, the pair met producer Kevin S. Bright. Then the three became partners and got a deal to produce a new comedy for Warner Brothers. What they came up with was based on Crane and Kauffman’s after-college years, when they hung out at the local coffee house and involved themselves in every aspect of each other’s lives.

It didn’t take long for viewers to make friends with Friends. The situation comedy quickly became a top ten hit. Critics loved it as well. Entertainment Weekly said the show operated like a Broadway show, with twisty plots and unique jokes. The television theme song has also been a success with the public. The song’s success helped save the television theme song. An ABC(美国广播公司)executive was ready to order very short music intros(前奏) on his network’s shows, thinking that viewers would hit the remote control as soon as the opening started. But the success of the Friends theme song led the ABC executive to change his mind-- remote controls or not, the TV theme song would stay.

Years have gone by, but Friends remains and will remain an example of a modern US situation comedy that is both hugely entertaining television and nothing short of a genuine latter-day social phenomenon.

1.What is stressed in the second paragraph?

B. It is about friendship between college students.

C. It was criticized by Entertainment Weekly.

D. It first came into being in the 1990s.

3.What can we learn from the passage?

A. Producer, Kevin S. Bright, graduated from the same college as David Crane.

B. ABC once replaced the theme song of its TV show with a short music intro.

C. The ABC executive thought highly of the theme song of Friends.

D. Marta Kauffman expected Friends to achieve great success.

4.What might the author think of Friends?

A. Its merits outweigh its shortcomings.

B. Its success lies in the lack of good situation comedies.

C. He/she has a reserved attitude towards its success.

D. He/she shows great affection towards it.

There’s more evidence that what’s good for your heart is good for your head.A new study shows that people who run, swim or do other moderate intensity(中等强度的)exercise have brains that look,on average,10 years younger than the brains of couch potatoes.

“Our study showed that for older people, getting moderate intensity exercise may be protective, helping them keep their brains work better,”said Dr.Clinton Wright of the University.Of Miami, who led the study. But it’s not necessarily easy.Walking, golf, bowling and yoga didn’t count, and people need to start before they begin showing memory loss,Wright’s team reported in the journal Neurology.

The study of nearly 900 people who exercise regularly showed that 90 percent fell into the low-intensity group. These people are part of a larger group taking part in a bigger study called Northern Manhattan Study. They were asked how long and how often they exercised during the past two weeks.Five years later, they were tested for memory and thinking skills and got a brain MRI.Seven years after that, they took the memory and thinking tests again. The 10 percent who said they took part in moderate intensity exercise scored better on the tests. These included running, climbing, swimming, riding bicycles and so on.

“We found that those with moderate heavy activity had higher scores and slower decline than inactive patients when comparing the results,”the study team wrote.

Many studies have shown that exercise may not prevent Alzheimer’s but may delay it.The findings fit in with a study that found two years of exercising, eating healthier food and brain training can promote people’s memory function.

A.makes people’s heart better than their heads

B.helps people keep a younger brain

C.makes people ten years younger

D.makes people look like potatoes

2.What’s true about the study?

A.Most people surveyed took low-intensity exercise.

B.Only 900 people took part in the bigger study.

C.High-intensity exercise is better.

D.Ten people scored best on the test.

3.How did the study team come to the conclusion?

A.By observing people exercise.

B.By using examples.

C.By making a comparison.

D.By doing a brain MRI.

4.What’s the best title for this passage?

A.How to keep healthy

B.Ways to make your brain work better

C.To exercise or not

D.Moderate exercise keeps your brain younger
