Goodbye Pluto
It is always hard for a small fish to live in a big pond.Pluto’s recent departure from the classical planet family clearly proves that size really matters.
1
After weeks of heated debate, over 2, 500 astronomers from 75 countries voted on the definition of a “planet” at a conference of the International Astronomical Union(IAU). 2 It is all because, compared with Neptune, Pluto is very small. It is attracted by Neptune’s gravity when the two planets get closer.
According to IAU, a “dwarf planet” should have an orbit around the Sun. 3 .
The solar system is now made up of the eight “classical planets, ” together with a number of dwarf planets. The classical planets are:Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
The debate over Pluto’s status started in 1992.After an advanced telescope was sent into space, astronomers started to find a belt of objects, which lies beyond Neptune. The belt contains nearly 1, 000 objects, including Pluto. 4 There are at least two objects of a similar size to Pluto.
5 More dwarf planets of a similar size to Pluto would join the family of planets.Scientists will probably find many more dwarf planets.
A.It will not have a clear neighborhood around its orbit, and must not be a satellite. The new classification means that the science textbooks will have to be updated.
B.Astronomers voted on August 24 to create the first scientific definition of the word “planet”, and Pluto obviously didn’t make the cut.It turned out to be only a “dwarf planet”.
C.It seems that even if the IAU had kept Pluto’s status as a planet, the classical theory of nine planets in the solar system would have had to be changed, but the other way around.
D.Pluto will be cut away for ever.
E.As they continued the exploration, scientists recently discovered at least 41 dwarf planets at the edges of the solar system.
F.According to the definition, a planet must have a clear neighborhood around its orbit.Pluto has widely been considered a planet since its discovery in 1930.Unfortunately, it has a special orbit which overlaps with Neptune’s.
G.Spaceships will be sent onto Pluto.

Explosive sound and energy
ROCK music didn’t exist 60 years ago. 1 Someone didn’t just wake up and invent rock. So, how did it happen? What is rock?Although impossible to strictly define, it’s generally recognized that rock music was born in 1950s America. 2 At this time, early “rockers”were mixing the country music of white America with the rhythm and blues sound loved by the black US citizens. The result was rock‘n’ roll. The record most commonly considered as the beginning of the rock ‘n’ roll period is Bill Haley & The Comets’1954 recording of “Rock Around the Clock”. 3 Elvis’s 1950s recordings established the basic language of rock ‘n’ roll; his explosive stage presence set standards for the music’s visual image, while his voice was powerful and interesting.
4 Despite the different directions and sound of rock bands over the last 50 years, there is something common to all the greats:a charming lead vocalist, a talented guitarist full of energy and creativity, a bassist with cool indifference and a drummer.
For most of its life, rock has been split into different parts, creating new styles every few years-giving birth to a never-ending number of sub-genres. 5 Rock is a generic term, but it’s exciting that it can now mean so many different things.
A.Rock is my favorite and I’ll be a popular singer.
B.Now, it’s one of the world’s most popular genres. But musical styles don’t spring up overnight.
C.Rock had a specific sound and image for only a few of its early years. As time went by, the genre began to place equal emphasis on skills and pushing the boundaries of the music.
D.In fact, in the West, musically speaking, the years 1953~1955 are known as the rock ‘n’ roll years.
E.As a result, “rock”has been used to describe everything from bands playing catchy rhythms to groups based on tuneless, noisy guitars.
F.Rock music will be held in our school if we send an invitation to the band.
G.But it was Elvis Presley, known as “The King of Rock and Roll”, who really popularized the new sound throughout America and the Western world.

Soil conservation(保护)efforts protect soil from wind and water that can blow or wash it away.[1]_________ One important form of soil conservation is the use of windbreaks.Windbreaks stop the wind from blowing soil away. They also keep the wind from destroying or damaging crops.Windbreaks are barriers formed by trees and other plants with many leaves.[2]_________ Windbreaks are effective when a wall of trees and other plants blocks the wind. The windbreaks should also limit violent motions of the wind to those areas closest to the windbreak.
[3]_________ If the wall of trees and plants stops wind completely, then violent air motions will take place close to the ground. These motions cause the soil to lift up into the air where it will be blown away.[4]_________ An easy rule to remember is that windbreaks can protect areas up to ten times the height of the tallest trees in the windbreak. There should be at least two lines in each windbreak. One line should be large trees. The second line, right next to it, can be formed from shorter trees and other plants with leaves.Windbreaks not only protect land and crops from the wind. They can also provide wood products.[5]_________
a.Windbreaks seem to work best when they allow a little wind to pass through.
b.Good soil produces food crops for both humans and animals.
c.For the long term, trees will be planted throughout the area to act as windbreaks which will provide adequate protection.
d.Farmers plant windbreaks in lines around their fields. They are very important when grains such as wheat are grown.
e.Plantations are also sometimes known as “man made forests” or “tree farms”.Environmental Plantations may be established for watershed or soil protection. These are established for erosion control, landslide stabilization and windbreaks reduce carbon di oxide and increase oxygen levels in atmosphere.
f.These include wood for fuel and longer pieces for making fences.Locally grown trees and plants are best for windbreaks.
g.For this reason, a windbreak is best if it has only 60 to 80 per cent of the trees and plants needed to make a solid line.

Online Friends and LoveIn so many ways, cyberspace mirrors the real world.[1] ________ Others buy and sell products.Still others look for friendship, or even love.Unlike the real world, however, your knowledge about a person is limited to words on a computer screen.Identity(身份)and appearance mean very little in cyberspace.[2] ________ So even the shyest person can become a chat-room star.Usually, this “faceless” communication doesn’t create problems.Identity doesn’t really matter when you’re in a chat room discussing politics or hobbies and it makes the Internet a great place for exciting conversation.Where else can so many people come together to chat about their interests?[3] ________ They’re looking for serious love relationships. Is cyberspace a good place to find love? That answer depends on whom you ask. Some of these relationships actually succeed.Others fail miserably.
Supporters of online relationships claim that the Internet allows couples to get to know each other.Personal appearance doesn’t get in the way.But critics of online relationships arguer that no one can truly know another person in cyberspace.Why?[4] ________ Internet users can carefully make their words fit whatever image they want to give.In a sense, they’re not really themselves. All of this may be fine if the relationship stays in cyberspace.[5] ________ With so many unknowns, it’s easy to let one’s imagination “fill in the blanks”.This leads to disappointment when couples meet in person. So, before looking for love in cyberspace, remember the advice of Internet pioneer Clifford Stoll:“Life in the real world is far richer than anything you’ll find on a computer screen.”
A.When we talk with others on the line, we can express ourselves freely.
B.But some Internet users want more than just someone to chat with.
C.People ask for information, play games, and share hobby tips.
D.Generally speaking, online friends and love are worth seeking for.
E.Because the Internet gives users a lot of control over? how others view them.
F.Rather, a person’s thoughts or at least the thoughts they type-are what really count.
G.But not knowing a person is a big problem in a love relationship.

The oldest stone buildings in the world are the pyramids. 1 .There are over eighty of them scattered(散布)along the banks of the Nile, some of which are different in shape from the true pyramids. The most famous of these are the “step” pyramid and “Bent” pyramid.
Some of the pyramids still look much the same as they must have done when they were built thousands of years ago. Most of the damage suffered by the others has been at the hands of men who were looking for treasure or, more often, for stone to use in modern buildings. 2 .These are good reasons why they can still be seen today, but perhaps the most important is that they were planned to last forever. 3 .However, there are no writings or pictures to show us how the Egyptians planned or built the pyramids themselves. 4 .Nevertheless, by examining the actual pyramids and various tools which have been found, archaeologists(考古学家)have formed a fairly clear picture of them.
One thing is certain:there must have been months of careful planning before they could begin to build. 5 .You may think this would have been easy with miles and miles of empty desert around, but a pyramid could not be built just anywhere.Certain rules had to be followed, and certain problems had to be overcome.
A.The dry climate of Egypt has helped to preserve(保护)the pyramids, and their very shape have made them less likely to fall into ruin.
B.It is practically certain that plans were made for the building of the pyramids because the plans of other large works have fortunately been preserved.
C.The first thing they had to do was to choose a suitable place.
D.Consequently(所以), we are only able to guess at the methods used.
E.Many people were killed while building the pyramids.
F.They have stood for nearly 5000 years, and it seems likely that they will continue to stand for thousands of years yet.
G.It takes workers twenty years to build the Pyramids.
