【题目】One of the qualities that most people admire in others is the willingness to admit one's mistakes. It is extremely hard sometimes to say a simple thing like “I was wrong about that,”and it is even harder to say,“I was wrong, and you were right about that.”

I had an experience recently with someone admitting to me that he had made a mistake fifteen years ago. He told me he had been the manager of a certain grocery store in the neighborhood where I grew up,and he asked me if I remembered the egg cartons (箱子).Then he related an incident and I began to remember clearly the incident he was describing.

I was about eight years old at the time, and I had gone into the store with my mother to do the weekly grocery shopping. On that day,I must have found my way to the dairy (乳品的) food department where the incident took place.

There must have been a special sale on eggs that day because there was an impressive display of eggs in dozen and halfdozen cartons. The cartons were stacked(堆放) three or four feet high.I must have stopped in front of a display to admire the stacks. Just then a woman came by pushing her grocery cart and knocked off the stacks of cartons. For some reason,I decided it was up to me to put the display back together,so I went to work.

The manager heard the noise and came rushing over to see what had happened. When he appeared,I was on my knees examining some of the cartons to see if any of the eggs were broken, but to him it looked as though I was the criminal. He severely scolded me and wanted me to pay for any broken eggs.I protested(抗议)my innocence and tried to explain, but it did no good. Even though I quickly forgot all about the incident, obviously the manager did not.

【1】The author was ________ when he wrote this article.

【题目】Last fall, beekeepers from states with warm climates began to report a sudden loss of honey bees.Losses were reported in twentyfour states and spread to Canada.Today, some beekeepers say thirty percent to ninety percent of their honey bees are gone.Food price could go up as a result. And some beekeeping businesses have failed.

Many kinds of plants, trees and grasses need bees to pollinate them.Bees gather nectar from flowers during this process. The liquid gives them food and material to make honey. As the bees land on flowers, their bodies pick up and drop off particles of pollen(花粉).Most flowering plants need pollination to reproduce.

Honey bees can die during the winter. But few dead bees have been found this time.Instead, the bees seem to have disappeared.Experts call the condition “colony collapse disorder”.

Agriculture Department official Caird Rexroad said the colony collapse disorder threatens about fifteen billion dollars worth of the country's farm economy.Mr.Rexroad commented at a hearing of a House of Representatives agriculture subcommittee.

Mr.Rexroad said the cause of the sudden loss of bees was not clear. The number of honey bees had already fallen before the colony collapse disorder began.

Experts say the varroa mite is at least partly responsible for the earlier decrease in honey bees. The mite is a tiny creature that feeds on honey bees.It may play a part in colony collapse disorder by carrying bee viruses.Or the problem may be caused by other disease and weather conditions.

Diana CoxFoster of Pennsylvania State University is part of the scientific group.Ms.CoxFoster says the nation needs honey bees that can defnd themselves better against disease and insects. The recent mapping of most of the honey bees' genes offers the hope of a stronger honey bee some day.

【1】Some people have failed in beekeeping businesses because ________.

A.they want to make more money by doing something else

B.the climates were too warm to raise bees last fall

C.too many bees have disappeared for no reason

D.more and more people are beginning to raise bees

【2】Which of the following statements is TRUE according to this passage?

A.It is normal that some bees die in the cold season.

B.The plants can't live without bees at all.

C.Many bees have died because of the bad weather.

D.Researchers have found the reason of the death of bees.

【3】The passage is mainly to tell us that ________.

A.the honey bees are important to plants, trees and grasses

B.many Americans are surprised at the loss of honey bees

C.strong honey bees are in great need in America

D.something has happened to American honey bees

【题目】Washington: NASA has announced evidence that Jupiter's largest moon, Ganymede, has a saltwater ocean under its icy surface. The ocean seems to have more water than all the water on Earth's surface, according to new Hubble observation.

New Hubble observations of Ganymede's magnetic field strongly suggest that the moon, which is the largest in our whole solar system, is home to a subsurface ocean.

Scientists estimate the ocean is 95 kilometres thick, which is about 10 times deeper than Earth's oceans. But unlike our salty waters, Ganymede's ocean is buried under 150 kilometres of ice.

While scientists have speculated(推测) since 1970s about the presence of an ocean on Ganymede------the largest moon in our solar system------ until now the only observational evidence came from a brief flyby by the Galileo spacecraft, which didn’t observe the moon long enough to confirm a liquid ocean.

This discovery marks an important milestone, highlighting what only Hubble can accomplish. In its 25 years in orbit, Hubble has made many scientific discoveries in our own solar system. A deep ocean under the icy surface of Ganymede opens up further exciting possibilities for life beyond Earth.

Scientists have already confirmed the existence of an ocean on Europa, another moon orbiting Jupiter, and NASA has announced plans to send an unmanned mission there searching for the life that might come with liquid water.

Hubble is a telescope that orbits Earth, but because of its impressive gravitational analyses it can be used to study the inside of far distant planets. Using these same principles, scientists could theoretically detect oceans on distant planets as well.

【1】What can we learn about the Ganymede from the passage?

A. It is a planet with the largest moon in our whole solar system.

B. Its ocean adds to people’s excitement about life beyond Earth.

C. It will be used by NASA as a base for the Hubble telescope.

D. Its liquid ocean was first proved by the Galileo spacecraft.

【2】Which of the following best describes the writer’s attitude towards Hubble?

A. Cautious B. Doubtful

C. Negative D. Favourable

【3】What does the underlined part in Paragraph 6 mean?

A. An underground ocean has been found in Europa.

B. The presence of an underground ocean in Europa is not possible.

C. It is now certain that there is an ocean on Europa.

D. No evidence has shown the existence of an ocean on Europa.

【4】What type of writing does this passage belong to?

A. A term essay B. A news report

C. An experiment report D. An exploration review.

【题目】阅读下面材料, 在空白处填入适当的内容或括号内单词的正确形式。

Scientists have discovered that1(stay) in the cold could help us lose weight. Researchers at the University of California found that exposure to the cold increases levels of a protein that helps form brown fat--the type of fat that produces heat and keeps us warm. Brown fat burns energy,2helps us lose weight. White fat stores extra energy, which results3weight gain. The researchers said that because air conditioning and heating give us constant,4(comfort) temperatures, our body’s need for brown fat has decreased. They found that: “Outdoor workers in northern Finland who5(expose) to cold temperature have6significant amount of brown fat when7(compare) to same-aged indoor workers.” The research was conducted on two different control groups of mice.8group was injected with the protein that helps create brown fat. This group later gained 30% less weight after both groups were fed high-fat diets. The researchers say this could be good news in the fight against obesity. People who are obese have9(low) levels of brown fat than thinner people. Head researcher Hei Sook Sul said, “This protein could become an important target for research into the treatment and prevention of obesity and obesity-related diseases.” She added, “If you can somehow increase levels of this protein, you could10(possible) lose more weight even if eating the same amount of food.”

【题目】Scientists are learning new things about Antarctica, the coldest place on Earth. For example, the Antarctic ice sheet is shrinking. A new study found that summer ice loss in parts of Antarctica was at its highest level in 1,000 years. The study showed that Antarctic ice was melting mostly from below ice shelves, where the water is warmer than the ice.

Eric Rignot is an earth system expert at the University of California, Irvine. He also works for the American space agency, NASA. There he serves as senior research scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, also in California. He says ice melting from below is responsible for 55 percent of the shelf loss from 2003 to 2008. That is a much higher rate than scientists thought earlier.

Professor Rignot and his team used satellite observations, radar and computer models to measure features above the ice to learn what was going on below.

The measurements show differences from one area to the next around the continent. The major ice shelves are called Ross, Filchner and Ronne. They make up two-thirds of Antarctica’s ice shelves. But they are responsible for only 15 percent of the melting ice.

The professor says even small changes, like changes in ocean flow driven by wind, can make a huge difference in the melting of the ice shelf.

Sixty percent of the Earth’s fresh water is held in the huge Antarctic ice sheet. Professor Rignot says the study will help experts predict how the continent reacts to warmer ocean waters and helps to cause rising sea levels around the world. The study was published in the journal Science.

【1】 What’s the main idea of the passage?

A. the Antarctic ice sheet is shrinking

B. the coldest place on earth

C. the major Antarctica’s ice shelves

D. the Atlantic Ocean are changing

【2】How did Eric Rignot and his team do the research?

A. He serves as senior research scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

B. Small changes, like changes in ocean flow driven by wind, can make a huge difference in the melting of the ice shelf.

C. They used satellite observations, radar and computer models to know the things happening below the ice.

D. They melted 55% of the Antarctica’s ice to prove their theory is right.

【3】Which is true of the following statements?

A. Ice melting from below is responsible for 35 percent of the shelf loss from 2003 to 2008.

B. Sixty percent of the Earth’s fresh water is contained in the huge Antarctic ice sheet.

C. The major ice shelves are called Ross, Filchner and Ronne, which make up one-third of Antarctica’s ice shelves.

D. Summer ice loss in Antarctica was at its highest level in 1,000 years.
