If you live in the United States, you can’t have a full-time job until you are 16 years old. At 14 or 15, you work part-time after school or on weekends, and during summer vacation you can work 40 hours each week. Does all that mean that if you are younger than 14, you can’t make your own money? Of course not! Kids from 10-13 years of age can make money by doing lots of things.
Valerie, 11, told us that she made money by cleaning up other people’s yards. Lena, 13, makes money by knitting(织) dog sweaters and selling them to her neighbors. Reisa said she had started taking art classes and showing her works to people. People ask her to draw pictures for them and they pay her for them. Jasmine. 13, writes articles for different magazines!
Kids can learn lots of things from making money. By working to make your own money, you are learning the skills you will need in life. These skills can include things like how to get along with others, how to use technology and how to use your time wisely. Some people think that asking for money is a lot easier than making it; however, if you can make your own money, you don’t have to depend on anyone else. The five dollars that you make will probably make you feel a lot better than the twenty dollars you ask for.

With its budget of $80 million , John Woo as director, and an all-star cast(明星云集的演员阵容), Red Cliff is the most expensive and ambitious Asian-financed film ever. Last week I saw the release of the second part, and boy oh boy does it shows.
But watching the film as a foreigner I felt I was missing out on something. Not knowing my Cao Cao’s from my Zhou Yu’s, I was not even sure whom I wanted to win. Certainly after the opening scene, in which Cao Cao is seen watching a game of Cuju, an ancient Chinese variation of football, I knew who had my support. After all, any man who enjoys his football is someone after my own heart. But after Cao Cao resorted to some evil strategies against his enemies in the south, I wasn’t so sure he was the man I should be rooting for.
And there is a lot more to Red Cliff 2 than just extravagant battle scenes. The film does not take itself too seriously. Conversations between leaders are littered with one-liners, many of which had the audience in laughter. There is even enough to keep fans of more romantic entertainment happy too. This includes a charming relationship between a southern spy(侦探)and an innocent northern soldier. The characters’ interaction provides some genuinely heart-warming moments in the middle of the battle.
Clocking in at(结束于)around two hours, the film certainly does justice to the history story. When I walked out the cinema, I felt as drained(精疲力竭) as Cao Cao’s soldiers must have 1,800 years ago.
小题1:By expressing “boy oh boy” in the first paragraph, the author seems to show that _______.
A.the film characters are like boys who are childish.
B.the film provides amazing and surprising scenes for audience.
C.the film is suitable for younger boys to watch.
D.the film scene is so bloody that boys shouldn’t watch it.
小题2:When did the author change his attitude toward Cao Cao?
A.When he read the history story about Cao Cao.
B.When he saw Cao Cao was watching a game of Cuju,
C.When he realized that Cao Cao took some bad measures to beat his enemies.
D.When he saw the romantic love story of Cao Cao and a southern spy.
小题3:The following factors of the film are all mentioned in the passage except_______.
A.high budgetB.leading rolesC.actors and actressD.conversations
小题4:From the passage we can infer that_______.
A.the author is a football fan in a foreign country.
B.Cuju is the name of an ancient Chinese variation of football.
C.the film Red Cliff 2 lasts about two hours.
D.the author was very tired after about two hours’ battle.

Before the opening of the Cape Cod Canal in 1914,the only way ships could leave Boston was on a route around Race Point—the northern tip of Cape Cod.However, navigation during the 18th century was a nightmare, because the floating cross current(交叉气流) around Race Point caused countless accidents. So building a lighthouse to lighten the place was very necessary.
As early as 1808,the people of Provincetown requested a lighthouse on Race Point, but it took Congress eight years to react when they finally paid $ 8,000 on April 27,1816 to build a lighthouse —Race Point Light, which was located in the town of Provincetown,Massachusetts. It was first built of stone 25 feet high with no foundation and its light was 30 feet above the sea.It was equipped with one of the nation's earliest revolving lights.
Actually, there were two other lighthouses on Cape Cod,but they were hit by a storm in October 1841.In the following year,Race Point Light was examined by I.W.P.Lewis,who realized the light's importance. He said,“The light should be useful to all ships leaving Boston. However, its illuminating power is so weak that people would hardly be able to differentiate it from the lights set on the ships which stay in the bay,or close by.It hasn't played its role as a lighthouse well.”
The result was that old lighthouse was destroyed and a new iron lighthouse with a proper foundation was put up to take its place. The new lighthouse was 45 feet high.Although the original keeper's house was in good repair,it was destroyed too and a new one was built.Today the lighthouse has been automated(自动化)and Race Point Light is still an active aid to navigation.
You can park at Race Point Beach and walk about 45 minutes to the lighthouse.Sunset at Race Point Light is one of the Cape Cod's most popular scenes. And at times whales can be seen in the lighthouse. For reservations to stay one night in the keeper's house at Race Point call(508)487-9930.

Ted doesn’t like cars. He wants people to stop driving because cars make the air dirty. Ted had an idea. He said,“I’m going to cycle around North America. I want to show everyone that cycling is a fun way to get around. If more people ride bikes, the air will be cleaner.”
He left his hometown with $160 in his pocket. When he got to San Diego, he met another cyclist. The cyclist invited Ted to speak at a big meeting about the environment. Attempt a guess at the following question: In the English-speaking world, which country has the least affordable homes? You are wrong if you guessed the US, even with the housing bubble (气泡) and main sadness. Nor is it the UK, where prices have risen because demand is far from supply. According to a recent survey of 227 cities around the globe, you must go south of the equator (赤道) to Australia to find the priciest homes.
The report measured a city’s housing market along the following guidelines. An “affordable” home required three times or less of the average family’s income to purchase. At four times earnings, a home fell into the “unaffordable” category. And a “seriously unaffordable” home needed five times a family’s income. In Australia, homes in the least affordable city cost just about 9.5 times the average income. Sydney, Perth, and Melbourne were only a little under this figure.
Australian officials offered little comment, apart from a general statement on the dismal findings. These prices make the possibility that many Australians will one day own a home largely unbelievable. Land rationing (配给制) and excessive development charges have raised prices, and the problem will only be solved through urgent action by the Rudd government.
Some American cities were also included on the least affordable list, four of which were in California. America is still involved in a mortgage(抵押)crisis, though, affecting the affordability of homes. Yet a number of US cities garnered “affordable” status, namely Dallas and Kansas. Australia had no cities listed in the top fifty places with affordable homes.
The survey suggests that you can find affordable homes in most places, just not if you’re Australian and choose to live down under.
小题1:To buy an affordable house, you should pay _____.
A.3 times or less of the average family’s income
B.4 times or less of the average family’s income
C.5 times or less of the average family’s income
D.9.5 times or less of the average family’s income
小题2:What caused the prices of houses to increase in Australia?
A.The rising family’s income.
B.The demand over supply.
C.The excessive development charges.
D.The decrease of land.
小题3:The underlined word “dismal” in Paragraph 3 may mean _____.
A.cheerfulB.satisfactoryC.difficultD.gloomy
小题4:What might be the most suitable title for the passage?
A.Affordable Houses

Three-Dimensional (3D) movies have been becoming more and more popular in recent years. It seems 3D TV sets may be going into family households in the near future. While new digital 3D technology has made the experience more comfortable for many, for some with eye problems, long 3D viewing may result in an aching head, doctors say.

"There are a lot of people walking around with very minor eye problems, which under normal situations, the brain deals with naturally," said Dr Michael Rosenberg, an ophthalmologist (眼科医师) in Chicago. He said in a 3D movie, these people face a completely new sensory experience."That translates into greater mental effort, making it easier to get a headache," Rosenberg told Reuters.
In normal vision, each eye sees things at a slightly different angle."When that gets processed in the brain, that creates the perception (感觉) of depth," said Dr Deborah Friedman, an ophthalmologist in New York. The images people see in three dimensions in the movies are not calibrated (校准的) in the same way that their eyes and brain are."If your eyes are a little off to begin with, then it's really throwing a whole degree of effort that your brain now needs
to exert (竭尽全力)," he said.
Dr John Hagan, a Kansas City ophthalmologist, said some people who do not have normal depth perception cannot see in 3D at all.He said people with eye muscle problems, in which the eyes are not pointed at the same object, have trouble processing 3D images.
Rock Heineman, a spokesman for RealD, a provider of 3D equipment to theaters, said headaches and nausea were the main reasons 3D technology never took off
Heineman said older 3D technology used two film projectors(放映机), one that projected a left-eye image and one that projected a right-eye image.Three-D glasses would allow viewers to see a different image in each eye.
"People often complained of headaches and it was really because the projectors weren’t lined up," Heineman said.
Now his company has developed a new single digital projector, which switches between the left and the right-eye image 144 times a second, to help overcome some of the old problems.
"By going to a single digital projector, those problems were solved," he said.Friedman said he thinks most people will do fine with 3D movies and with 3D TVs, but Rosenberg said people may quickly tire of the novelty (新鲜事物)."I suspect there will be a lot of people who say it's sort of neat, but it's not really comfortable," he said.
小题1:The text is mainly about ____.
A.the reasons why people like 3D movies
B.how to improve 3D technology
C.the development of 3D technology in recent years
D.causes of headaches and nausea when people watch 3D movies
小题2:The underlined phrase "took off" could be replaced by "______".
A.became popular
B.flew in the sky
C.left hurriedly

A.people do not like new things like 3D movies
B.3D TVs will completely take the place of old TV sets
C.3D technology is the most important technology ever
D.those with eye muscle problems should not watch 3D movies
小题4:We can learn from what Rosenberg said in the last paragraph that
A.a single digital projector could solve all the problems with 3D technology
B.people will gradually become comfortable with 3D movies and TVs
C.the appeal of 3D movies and "TVs may fade
D.most people will actually enjoy the 3D experience

Valentine’s Day is on Feb. 14, and Chinese call it “lovers day”. I don’t think the translation is an accurate one, since it doesn’t only belong to lovers. Valentine’s Day is for expressing affection of all sorts. But it is uniquely for the romantically involved who shine the brightest, who spend the most money, whose hearts are the most engaged.
When I was b boy, my mother would buy enough cheap cards with ugly drawings of butterflies and little rabbits and honeybees for me to give one to every kid in my class, about 20 or so. The cards came in bags, and each card had a few foolish words-“Be Mine” or “I like you” or “You’ve Got My Heart” or the uninteresting words, “Hi, Valentine!” I would sign my name on the cards quickly and the name of one of my classmates on each easily-broken envelope. I would lick (舔)each one shut, but they were so cheap that the envelopes rarely had enough glue. On Valentine’s Day, I would take the cards to school-everyone did. We would have a party in our classroom, with cupcakes(杯形蛋糕)and juice and tiny candy hearts, which also had Valentine messages printed on them-“You’re sweet” or “Cupid(爱神丘比特)”or “Love”.
Ah, love! That’s the Valentine’s Day message: love. No one knows for certain the origin of the holiday. Several, Catholic victims were named Valentine, but it’s difficult to separate legend from fact. One story tells of a priest(牧师)named Valentine who was imprisoned and may have been stoned to death around 270 for performing marriages in going against the orders of the Roman Emperor Claudius II. But it’s hard today to find any religious connection.
小题1:From the first paragraph, why does the author say that we Chinese call Valentine’s Day “lovers’ day ”is not accurate?
A.Because only lovers would spend it.
B.Because it is only spent on Feb. 14.
C.Because it doesn’t only belong to lovers.
D.Because only those rich people could enjoy it.
小题2:A priest named Valentine was stoned to death for the sake of          .
A.his not attending a ceremony on time.
B.his stealing something from the church
C.his rude words to Roman Emperor Claudius II
D.his not obeying the orders by Roman Emperor Claudius II
