【题目】From VOA learning English, this is the Health & Lifestyle report.

Next time you make yourself a hot cup of tea or coffee, you might want to let it cool down a bit before drinking. Researchers say letting your hot drinks cool off could help you avoid some kinds of cancer.

In fact, the United Nations' cancer research agency decided to list hot drinks with lead, gasoline and exhaust fumes as “possibly carcinogenic.” In other words, each one could cause cancer.

Researchers at IARC(The International Agency for Research on Cancer) found evidence that drinks at temperatures above 65 degrees Celsius, when swallowed, can cause cancer of the esophagus(食管).

In developed countries, health experts have linked esophageal cancer to smoking and alcoholic drinks. However, researchers said “this form of cancer is more common in areas where people drink beverages at very high temperatures.”

In Europe and the United States, many people drink coffee and tea at temperatures around 60 degrees Celsius. And they often add milk which lowers the temperature considerably.

The findings, however, are good news for coffee drinkers.

In 1991, the World Health Organization listed coffee as “possibly carcinogenic.” WHO officials have since changed their position on that listing. They now suggest that the temperature of your hot drink is a greater risk factor than the actual drink itself.

Christopher Wild is the director of the IARC. When he spoke with the AFP news agency, he said the results “suggest that drinking very hot beverages is one probable cause of esophageal cancer and that it is the temperature, rather than the drinks themselves, that appears to be responsible.”

But how common is esophageal cancer? Worldwide, it is the eighth most common cancer. Cancer of the esophagus killed about 400,000 people in 2012.

I’m Anna Matteo.

【题目】 A video of a three-year-old girl being kicked by her own mother during a photo shot went viral on Thursday, indicating China’s underperformance in regulating the emerging child modeling industry.

The girl, known as Niu Niu, was physically abused (虐待) by her mother in several videos. The videos have annoyed Chinese media and Internet users alike. Many netizens and scholars call for local authorities to carry out further investigations into possible child abuse.

【题目】 “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” Eleanor Roosevelt once said. If we want to accomplish anything in life, let us remember that we should never give up.

Viennese - born composer Frederick Loewe, whom we remember from his musical scores that include My Fair Lady, Gigi and Camelot, was not always famous. He learned to play the piano with the great masters of Europe and achieved huge success as a musician and composer in his early years.

But when he immigrated to the United States, he failed as a pianist. For a while he tried other types of work. But he never gave up his dream and continued to play the piano and write music. During those years, he could not always afford to make ends meet by playing the piano.

One day, bent over the keyboard, he heard nothing but the music that he played with inspiration. When he finished and looked up, he was surprised to find that he had an audience - three men who were seated on the floor. They said nothing and made no movement toward the piano. Instead they dug into their pockets, took out all the money they had, placed it on the piano and walked out, empty-handed. Deeply touched by the beauty of his music, these men recognized excellence and responded to it.

Whatever you do, try your best. If what you do is worth doing and if you believe that who you are is of value, then you cannot afford to be content with mediocrity (平庸). When you choose the path of excellence through this life, you will bring out the best in yourself and receive the best it can offer in return.

1What can we learn from Roosevelt’s words?

A.It is difficult to do our best.

B.It is important to be successful in life.

C.We should be strict with ourselves.

D.We should face the future with the most dreams.

2What happened to Frederick Loewe after he immigrated to America?

A.He lost his hearing.B.He led a hard life for a while.

C.He enjoyed great success.D.He became a famous pianist.

3Why did the three men pay Frederick?

A.They were supposed to do that.B.They wanted to show their sympathy.

C.They were moved by his performance.D.They wanted to make friends with him.

4Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

A.Practice makes perfect.B.Never give up your dream.

C.It’s never too old to learn.D.Rome was not built in a day.

【题目】Asia’s mountain glaciers (冰川) will lose at least a third of their mass through global warming by the century’s end, with serious consequences for millions of people who rely on them for fresh water, researchers have said. The high mountains of Asia consist of a geographical region surrounding the Tibetan Plateau, holding the biggest store of frozen water outside the poles. It feeds many of the world’s great rivers, including the Ganges, the Indus and the Yarlung Zangbo River, on which hundreds of millions of people depend.

Nearly 200 nations adopted the Paris Agreement in 2015, which sets the goal of limiting warming to a level of “well below” 2°C, while “pursuing efforts” to achieve a lower ceiling of 1.5°C. Earth’s surface has already warmed by about 1°C, according to scientists.

The Asian high mountains, the new study said, were already warming more rapidly than the global average. A global temperature rise of 1.5°C would mean an average increase in the region of about 2.1°C, with differences between mountain ranges - all of which will warm by more than 1.5°C. The Hindu Kush mountain range would warm by about 2.3°C and the eastern Himalaya Mountains by 1.9°C, the study forecast.

“Even if temperatures stabilize at their current level, (glacier) mass loss will continue for decades to come,” the researchers added. “For the high mountain glaciers to survive, it is vital to reduce the global temperature increase to the lowest possible level.”

A study in July in the journal Nature Climate Change said there was only a 5% chance of holding global warming under 2°C. For 1.5°C, the chance was about 1%. On current trends, some experts project Earth is on track to warm by about 3°C.

1What is stressed about Asia’s mountain glaciers in the first paragraph?

A. The reason for its melting.

B. Its importance.

C. Its geographical condition.

D. The consequences caused by its decrease.

2What do we know about the temperature on the earth’s surface?

A. It keeps up its normal level.

B. It has risen too much since the Paris Agreement was made.

C. It is far below the level that the Paris Agreement demands.

D. It is near the lower ceiling that the Paris Agreement demands.

3How may we guarantee these glaciers, continued existence, according to researchers?

A. Hold global warming under 2°C.

B. Try to save water as much as we can.

C. Keep global temperature increase to a minimum.

D. Make the global temperature stable at its current level.

4How does the author develop the passage?

A. Giving examples. B. Describing.

C. Presenting data. D. Comparing.
