Though great progress has been made in science these years, but there are still many people lived in poor conditions. They make their living by collecting and selling used thing. Their children cannot go to school because they have not enough money to send their children to there. Why you think so many people still suffer from poverty now? The answer lies on the population explosion. A president of a developing country once say: “It is us who are to blame for the poverty because we used to ’produce’ children without limit.” Although this few words sound simple enough, they have clear pointed out one of the causes of the population explosion.

【答案】第一句:去掉but;lived→living

第二句:thing→things

第三句:to there→there

第四句:在Why后加do

第五句:on→in

第六句:say→said;us→we

第七句:this→these;clear→clearly

lie in为固定搭配,意为“在于”,on 改为in。

Lai Shixiong, 68, president of the Ivy League Analytical English magazine based in Taiwan, believes that constant practice and hard work are the keys to mastering English

Like many non-native speakers, Lai failed when he started learning English. When he was in high school, he once got the unbelievably low mark of seven out of 100 in an English test. He almost gave up on English, but then he graduated from high school and enrolled(入学 )in a military(军队的) school, where he met a classmate who was very good at English.

Amazed by his classmate’s American accent, Lai decided to start learning English from the very beginning. To correct his pronunciation, Lai practiced phonetic symbols(音标) hundreds of times everyday using vinyl records(黑胶唱片).

Now that he was able to pronounce words, he began to practice dialogues. “I just talked to myself as if I were in a dialogue," he said.“I was basically talking to the air.”

However, talking to himself also meant that Lai wouldn’t be able to hear English expressions from others. That was when dictionaries came to his rescue. Unlike many who just look up vocabulary and pronunciations, Lai looked at detailsdefinitions, usages and example sentences. “By checking every single part of the entry(词条), you learn not only the vocabulary itself, but plenty of useful small words,” Lai said.

Reading and listening to English news is another good way to keep abreast of(了解……的最新进展) new expressions. “The English news can teach us how to describe new things in our daily lives,” Lai said.

When he found it easy enough to speak English, Lai thought of two ways to improve his skills. He used English to describe everything he saw. He even translated speeches when he went to class meetings at the military school. “There is no shortcut to mastering a language. You have to practice,” Lai said. After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

【题目】I was interested in reading a newspaper article about a new concept in old people’s homes in France. The idea is simple, but revolutionarycombining a residential home for the elderly with a nursery school in the same building.

1 In the afternoon, the residents enjoy reading or telling stories to the children, and if a child is feeling sad or tired, there is always a kind lap to sit on and a cuddle (拥抱). There are trips out and birthday parties too.

2The children are happy because they get a lot more individual attention, and respond well because someone has time for them. They see illness and death and learn to accept them. The residents are happy because they feel useful and needed. They are more active and more interested in life when the children are around and they take more interest in their appearance too.

3There are many reasons for this, including the breakdown of the extended family, working parents with no time to care for aging relations, families that have moved away, and smaller flats with no room for grandparents. But the result is the sameincreasing numbers of children without grandparents and old people who have no contact with children. And more old people who are lonely and feel useless, along with more and more families with young children who desperately need more support. 4

That’s why intergenerational programmes, designed to bring the old and the young together, are growing in popularity all over the world. 5 Using young people to teach IT skills to older people is one obvious example.

【题目】 You're probably used to the regular upgrades in our cell-phone networks. There was 2G, which came along in 199l, replaced with 3G in 2001, followed by 4G in 2009. Now we're hearing about the coming of 5G.

But 5G is a much bigger leap than before. 5G, of course, is much faster than 4G in the real world and a 5G phone in a 5G city will enjoy Internet speeds between 9 and 20 times as fast. The arrival of 5G also means enormous leaps forward in capacityso much that every cell-phone plan will offer cheap, truly unlimited Internet access. “The consequences of that are huge,” says Sherif Hanna, Qualcomm's director of 5G marketing. For example, apps will no longer degrade (降低) your video quality or postpone downloading when you're out of Wi-Fi range. In fact, you'll probably prefer to do your downloads when you're on cellular (使用流量) because 5G will be much faster than whatever service you've got at home or work.

“However, not everyone is excited by the 5G development. The new standard gets its speed partly by using existing transmission(传输) frequencies more efficiently and partly by using the millimeter wave range. That's a big, juicy line of radio frequencies that are currently underused because millimeter wave is really hard to use,” Hanna says.

These frequencies are much higher than anything we've used for the cellular, which means they can offer unbelievable speedbut at the cost of range. Millimeter wave cellular towers have to be about 500 feet apart. Cell carriers not only will have to upgrade all their cell transceivers (called small cells) but will install(安装) a lot more of them as well.

That's why the millimeter wave flavor of 5G, the superfast coverage, will be available only in densely populated cities such as New York and San Francisco. In suburban and rural areas, 5G will bring a speedup of “only” nine times faster.

1What advantages does 5G have over previous networks?

A.5G is much faster and more convenient.

B.5G allows users to download more videos.

C.5G can provide better service and news at home.

D.5G cell-phone plans are expensive but more accessible.

2Hanna's words in paragraph 3 reflect .

A.popularity of the coming of 5G

B.easy access to the 5G development

C.concern about the 5G development

D.excitement about the 5G development

3What can we learn about 5G according to the text?

A.It requires more cellular towers.

B.It won't be available in rural areas.

C.It won't show speed improvements in suburbs.

D.It makes some populated cities even more crowded.

4Where is the text most likely from?

A.A tour brochure.B.A science newspaper.

C.A medical magazine.D.An experimental textbook.
