Football-called soccer in the United States-is probably the most popular sport in the world today. It has been popular for a long time. But many years ago each country had different rules for its own football game.

In 1863, a group of people met in England to change this. They wrote a set of rules for all countries to follow. They also planned for soccer teams from different countries to play against each other. The idea worked. These rules are the same today, more than 100 years later.

Now teams from many countries play to see which is the best.Soccer is so popular today that it is not unusual for 600 million people to watch a World Cup match on television.

How did the World Cup start? The soccer team from Uruguay won the Olympic championship in soccer in 1924 and 1928.That country decided to have the first World Cup games in Montevideo in 1930.These first games were not very successful.Only thirteen teams arrived to play and eight of them were from South America. It didn't seem like a world championship. The team from Uruguay won the Cup that first year.

A
After my husband died suddenly from a heart attack,my world crashed around me. My six children were all under 10,and I was burdened with the responsibilities of earning a living, and caring for the children. I was fortunate to find a wonderful housekeeper to care for the children during the week, but from Friday nights to Monday mornings, the children and I were alone.
One Friday evening I came home from work to find a big pretty German Shepherd(牧羊犬)on our doorstep. This dog seemed to intend to enter the house. The children liked “German” immediately and begged me to let him in. I agreed to let him sleep in the basement. That night I slept peacefully for the first time in many weeks.
The following morning we made phone calls and checked lost-and-found ads for German’s owner, but with no results.
On Sunday I had planned to take the children on a picnic. Since I thought it best to leave German behind in case his owner came by,we drove off without him. When we stopped to get gas,we were amazed to see German racing to the gas station after us. No way was he going to be left behind.
Monday morning I let him out for a run. He didn’t come back and we were all disappointed. We were convinced that we would never see him again. We were wrong. The next Friday evening,German was back on our doorstep. Again he stayed until Monday morning, when our housekeeper arrived.
This pattern repeated itself every weekend for almost 10 months. We grew more and more fond of German. We took comfort in his strong, warm presence, and we felt safe with him near us. As German became part of the family,he considered it his duty to check every bedroom to be sure each child was cozy in bed.
Each week, between German’s visits,I grew a little stronger,a little braver and more able to handle; every weekend we were no longer alone and enjoyed his company. Then one Monday morning we patted him on the head and let him out for what turned out to be the last time. We never saw German again.
56.The dog first came to the family when _______________.
A.it was needed most
B.the writer became strong enough
C.the writer was away on a business trip
D.the writer was busy on the weekday
57.The family planned to go on a picnic without the German Shepherd because ____.
A.it was too wild to control
B.it was too young to walk so far
C.the owner might come by to pick it up
D.it might spoil the trip
58.The writer was ____________ the German Shepherd.
A.afraid of B.grateful to     C.cruel to D.annoyed with
59.Which of the following can’t be used to describe the dog?
A.Loyal B.Helpful    C.Lovely    D.Wild

请阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项的标号涂黑。

Going back to school is a very exciting event for my two boys. It means getting new school bags and books, and seeing friends again after the summer holiday.

My oldest son, 9-year-old Salem, asked me several times where we would go to buy a backpack, while my other son, 6-year-old Abdullah, asked what school would be like this year.

For the last three years, school was a nightmare for many children and their parents as violence increased and there were more attacks on schools and teachers. As a result, many parents prevented their children from going to school. One of six children in this country did not attend primary school in 2009. Many kids who did attend school were accompanied by a parent for the entire day to make sure nothing happened to their children.

For poor families or those with large families, back to school can be an expensive time. The government gives some help to those living in poor neighborhoods, and school bags, note books and other items(商品) are given for free.

Most of the merchants who sell notebooks and pens now sell their products out on the street instead of in stores. They sit on the ground and lay their items on the ground or they have a small table to sell their goods.

The bags cost between $10 and $20, while clothes and shoes cost between $20 and $30. I found all the things I needed for my sons and even bought something for myself. I spent about $50 on each of them, including school uniforms.

At the end of the day, we returned to our home carrying many shopping bags filled with items that made my children happy and excited to go back to school. I just hope this school year will be a peaceful one.

56.The author’s children are ________ to go to school.

A. eager                       B. afraid                              C. unwilling                 D. surprised

57.The underlined word “nightmare” is the closest in meaning to ________.

A. fantasy                     B. dream world                    C. prison                      D. terrible situation

58.Many children are not going to school mainly because of ________.

A. the terrible education system                         B. security problems and poverty

C. parents’ distrust in schools                             D. the government’s inability

59.As a parent, the author ________.

A. is unable to afford his kids’ schooling   B. is unwilling to send his kids to school

C. hopes his kids have a happy school life        D. complains school education costs too much
