Nuclearpowered aircraft carriers are considered one of the most important marine weapons in the
20th century. So far, only two countries in the world, the USA and France, have ever produced them.
But these fearful fighting machines are about to enter Asia.
The US Navy said last month that one of its nine nuclearpowered aircraft carriers will be sent to
Japan to replace the diesel(柴油)powered carrier Kitty Hawk in 2008. In an agreement on October
30, the two countries also planned to level up their military (军事的) cooperation and the USA called
for Japan to take a larger role in alliance military moves.
It will be the first time that a nuclearpowered carrier is based in Japan. Bombed by US forces in
World War ? at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan is the only world country to have been attacked by
a nuclear weapon. Therefore, the citizens are highly sensitive to where nuclearpowered weapons are
based.
"A radiation leak at Yokosuka would kill 100,000 people as far away as Tokyo, and could cause
billions of dollars in damage, " said Masahiko Goto, leader of a protest group in Yokosuka. His group
has collected more than 300,000 signatures of people across Japan opposed to the nuclear carrier.
The 44yearold Kitty Hawk, the US Navy's oldest active ship, has been based in Yokosuka since
1998. It had returned to the US to be decommissioned in 2008. The new carrier, yet to be unveiled,_
will travel faster, be capable of supporting longer operations and carry with it the Navy's most modern
technology.
Experts pointed that this change is not only to strengthen the USJapan military alliance but also to
keep the military power of China and North Korea within limits. However, even Japanese experts don't
believe that the two countries are threats to the region.
"There is no need for Japan to have a nuclear carrier as defense, " said Tetsuo Maeda, an international
relations professor at Tokyo International University. He said that the change of ship indicates an
increased military capability in the region, much more than what is needed.

A. are aware of its benefits to the country
B. are anxious about its potential danger
C. are curious about the advanced technology
D. are against where the carrier will be based

2. The replacement of the aircraft carrier is intended to________.
A. set up a kind of base in Japan
B. strengthen the USJapan military alliance
C. show Japan's greater military capability
D. get rid of the dated marine weapon

3. From the story, we learn that________.
A. no other countries except the USA and France possess aircraft carriers
B. Japan has long planned to increase its military capability with new weapons
C. Japan will be the first country in Asia to have a nuclear aircraft carrier
D. Japan will be the third country to produce a nuclearpowered aircraft carrier

4. The underlined word "unveiled" in the fifth paragraph probably means________.
A. perfected
B. discussed about
C. produced
D. brought to view

5. By his remark in the last paragraph, the professor means that________.
A. he is quite confident of their military defense
B. he is completely opposed to a new nuclear carrier
C. what is needed is far more than a nuclear carrier
D. it is unnecessary to guard against the two countries

It's a fine line parents walk as they try to guide their kids into adulthood. You want to protect but not
treat too kindly, advise but not control and let them live their own lives-with some input, of course.
If your child asks you to tie a particular hardtotie knot(绳结)for a project she is working on,just tie
the knot. Don't start helping with the rest of the project or making suggestions on how to do it. She wants
to do it herself, in her own way. Before offering help or advice which your child has not asked for, count
to ten. Perhaps in those seconds you'll decide that the advice would do no good,or isn't really that
important, and you'll drop it. If the advice still seems important, you will give it,but the pause may lead you
to give it in a more thoughtful way.
Remember that your child is not you and is not a reflection of you. We make a serious mistake if we
try to shape our children into copies of ourselves, or if we think of them as extensions or reflections of
ourselves. We need to help them to be them, not try to turn them into us or into something that we think
will make us look good.
Our primary responsibility to our children is not that of telling them momenttomoment or daytoday
how to behave but providing them with a healthy environment in which to develop. For example, one of
the best ways you can help your kids is to work with your community to create safeenough outdoor
places to play in your neighborhood.

Compared to adults, children seem to be moving constantly. So it’s no surprise that most parents who
are quizzed about their child’s physical activity level describe their children as fairly active. But a new study of nearly 2,000 British school children suggests that many parents overestimate the amount of physical
activity their children are really getting.
The researchers equipped 1,892 British school children, ages 9 and 10, with accelerometers that
measure all physical activity during a given time period. The research, known as the Speedy study
collected the exercise data from children at 92 schools in Norfolk, England, between April and July 2007.
A child was regarded inactive if he or she recorded less than an hour a day of physical activity.
Although the majority of children studied were getting enough physical activity, a_sizable_minority_of_
children_were_not.Overall,39 percent of girls and 18 percent of boys studied were getting less than an
hour of physical activity each day.
But if you asked the parents of the inactive children to describe their child’s activity level, the vast
majority-80 percent-described their children as fairly or very physically active, according to the findings
published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.Interestingly, the children themselves had
more awareness about their lack of physical activity.Overall,40 percent of children overestimated their
physical activity.
But it wasn’t the parents of overweight children who were most likely to guess wrong about physical
activity levels. The parents who were most out of touch about their child’s physical fitness were more
likely to have children who were slim.Parents of girls were also more likely to overestimate physical
activity. The researchers noted that parents should be educated about the importance of physical activity
for children even if the child is not overweight.
“Parents of slim children appear to assume that their children are adequately  active, ”  the study
authors reported.“Increasing awareness regarding health benefits of physical activity beyond weight
control might help have a correct idea of physical activity levels and encourage behavior change.”

1. According to the Speedy study, what kind of children can be judged physically inactive?

A. Slim children.
B. Children with less than an hour a day of physical activity.
C. Overweight children.
D. Children out of touch with their parents for a long time.

2. What does the writer probably mean by saying “a sizable minority of children were not” in Paragraph 3?

A. The amount of children’s physical activity is far from the writer’s satisfaction.
B. Only a small number of children were not getting enough physical activity.
C. A small number of children didn’t overestimate their physical activity.
D. The minority of children were not studied at all.

3. The passage is intended to________.

A. encourage parents to fairly judge their children’s physical activity levels
B. persuade parents to keep an eye on their children’s weight
C. urge children to wear accelerometers during exercise
D. advise parents to keep in touch with their children

Sydney-A shark savaged a schoolboy's leg while he was surfing with his father at a beach in Sydney
on February 23. It was the third shark attack along the coast of Australia's largest city in a month.
The 15yearold boy and his father were in the water off Avalon, on Sydney's northern beaches,
around dawn when he was attacked. The city's beaches are packed with locals and tourists during the
summer months.
"The father heard a scream and turned to see his son thrashing(激烈扭动)about in the water, "police
said. "Fortunately, the shark swam away and the boy was helped to the shore by his father. "
Lifesaving Club spokesman Nick Miller said, "It got him around the top of his left leg and the father
came and dragged him out of water. "He said the boy was bleeding heavily when he was brought to the
shore. "There was a lot of pain, as you can imagine. "The teenager was airlifted to hospital for treatment
for leg injuries.
Police said the bites "cut through to the bone", but the boy did not appear to have sustained any
fractures (骨折).  He was in a stable condition now.
Several beaches were closed after the attack. Water police and lifeguards were searching for the
shark, while police hoped to identify its species by the shape of the bite marks. But they said it was too
early to say what type of shark attacked the boy. "I don't even know if he saw it, "Miller said.
Many shark species live in the waters off Sydney's beaches, but attacks on humans are still relatively
rare.  However, there were two attacks on successive days earlier this month, one on a navy diver in
Sydney harbor, not far from the famous Opera House, and the other on a surfer at the city's
worldfamous Bondi beach.
Fishermen say shark numbers are on the rise. There is a ban on commercial fishing in the harbor,
which has increased fish stocks. Marine experts also claim environmental protection has created a
cleaner environment, attracting sharks closer to the shore as they chase fish. Many shark species,
including the Great White-the maneaters made famous in Steven Spielberg's Jaws-are protected in
Australian waters.
1. The report mainly tells us ________.
A. shark attacks on humans are on the rise
B. sharks attacked humans three times in one month
C. a boy was attacked by a shark at a Sydney beach
D. shark numbers are increasing in the waters off Sydney's beaches
2. The underlined word "savaged" in the first paragraph probably means "________".
A. attracted
B. dragged
C. bit
D. packed
3. What do we know about the city of Sydney from the passage?
A. It is one of the largest cities in Australia.
B. Sydney harbor is not far from the famous Opera House.
C. There are many locals and tourists on its coast all the year round.
D. There are few shark species in the waters off Sydney's beaches.
4.  About the injury of the boy we know that ________.
A. he was losing much blood when he was dragged out
B. he was very nervous when he was sent to hospital
C. he may be in danger of losing his leg
D. he was injured in the right leg
5. All the following are the causes of Australia's sharks' increasing EXCEPT that ________.
A. environmental protection has created a cleaner environment
B. a ban on commercial fishing has increased fish numbers
C. many shark species are protected in Australian waters
D. the film Jaws has made the Great White famous

I find some of the ways in which Chinese parents show love for their children rather surprising.
Obviously there are some pretty big differences between our behavior and theirs in this respect. Most
Chinese children seem to get whatever they want, from ice creams, sweets and toys to endless attention
from the adults around them.Is this a sort of spoiling or love? I wonder.
Most westerners would think it is a sort of spoiling rather than love. We think love means educating
your children and bringing them up to lead an independent life. That includes learning to accept the fact
that he can't get everything he wants. As an adult, he will not always get the quite expensive car he hunts
for; she will not always manage to acquire the beautiful dress she longs for. So we try to teach our
children early to cope with the disappointment of not getting what they want.
I find too much such kind of love for the children can actually spoil them. To my surprise, it seems
that the life of a Chinese child is rather hard. Without doubt, the child is the very center of a whole circle
of adults, but on the other hand he or she is also expected to start studying according to adults'wishes.
Many children of my son's age take piano lessons, painting classes and even English lessons. It looks as
if Chinese adults think that just playing without learning anything is a waste of time. So in this respect our
children appear spoiled, just because they are allowed to play. But without this sort of play how can
Western children develop such free and rich imaginations? In fact, the connection between this
imagination and the creativity is so important in the children's future life.
1. In which way do most Chinese children seem to be spoiled?
A. They can be supported by their parents.
B. They can play whenever they want.
C. They need not behave themselves.
D. Their demands can always be satisfied.
2. In the author's opinion, the life of a Chinese child is __________.
A. rather hard
B. rather easy
C. independent
D. colorful
3. The author thinks Western children appear spoiled because __________.
A. they can manage time by themselves
B. they can have the freedom to play
C. they can take piano lessons
D. they may have expensive toys
4. The best title of the passage could be __________.
A. Chinese children's early education
B. How to develop kids' imagination
C. What is the real love for children
D. The imagination and the creativity

I'm usually fairly skeptical about any research that concludes that people are either happier or unhappier or more or less certain of themselves than they were 50 years ago. While any of these statements might be true, they are practically impossible to prove scientifically. Still, I was struck by a report which concluded
that today's children are significantly more anxious than children in the 1950s. In fact, the analysis showed, normal children aged 9 to 17 exhibit a higher level of anxiety today than children who were treated for
mental illness 50 years ago.
Why are America's kids so stressed? The report cites two main causes: increasing physical isolation
(隔离) brought on by high divorce rates and less involvement in community, among other things and a
growing perception that the world is a more dangerous place.
Considering that we_can't_turn_the_clock_back,_adults can still do plenty to help the next generation.
At the top of the list is nurturing(培育) a better appreciation of the limits of individualism. No child is
an island. Strengthening social ties helps build communities and protect individuals against stress.
To help kids build stronger connections with others, you can pull the plug on TVs and computers. Your
family will thank you later. They will have more time for facetoface relationships, and they will get more
sleep.
Limit the amount of virtual(虚拟的) violence your children are exposed to. It's not just video games
and movies; children see a lot of murder and crime on the local news.
Keep your expectations for your children reasonable. Many highly successful people never attended
Harvard or Yale.
Make exercise part of your daily routine. It will help you cope with your own anxieties and provide a
good model for your kids. Sometimes anxiety is unavoidable. But it doesn't have to ruin your life.
1.According to the analysis, compared with normal children today, children treated as mentally ill 50 years ago ________.
A.probably suffered less from anxiety
B.were considered less individualistic
C.were less isolated physically
D.were probably less selfcentered
2.What does the author mean by saying "we can't turn the clock back" in the third paragraph?
A.It's impossible to forget the past.
B.The social reality children are facing cannot be forgotten.
C.It's impossible to slow down the pace of change.
D.Lessons learned from the past should not be forgotten
3.The author thinks that the conclusions of any research about people's state of mind are ________.
A.illogical
B.confusing
C.surprising
D.questionable
4.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.To children, anxiety is completely avoidable.
B.TV and computer play an important role in isolating children from the real world.
C.Exercise does not help to lessen children's anxiety.
D.Sometimes local news about crime and murder also affects children a little

I heard many parents complaining that their teenage children are rebelling. I wish it were so. At your
age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own two
feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are taking the same way of
showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out boldly on their own, most of them
are clutching (紧握) at one another's hands for reassurance.
They claim they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new
directions in music. But somehow they all end up huddled (聚在一起) round listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in thusandsuch a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out
of their cocoon (蚕茧) into a larger_cocoon.
It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his
or her own way. Industry has firmly carved out a teenage market. These days every teenager can learn
from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be. And many of today's parents have come to
award high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to a great barrier for the teenager
who wants to find his or her own path.
But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to
classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is
collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don't care to share at once with your
classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come-with the people who respect
you for who you are. That is the only kind of popularity that really counts.

1. In this passage, the author wants to tell ________.
A. teenagers to try to pursue their real selves
B. readers to try to be popular with people around
C. parents to try to control and guide their children
D. people to try to understand and respect each other

2. The author disapproves of rebelling teenagers ________.
A. growing away from their parents
B. following the popularity trend
C. walking a new way on their own
D. turning to their friends for help

3. The phrase "larger cocoon" at the end of the second paragraph refers to ________.
A. the distractive and variable society
B. the dazzling music world
C. the parental care and love
D. the popularity wave in the society

4. What does the author think of advertisements?
A. Convincing.
B. Instructive.
C. Influential.
D. Authoritative.

5. According to the author, what might happen when a teenager stands up against the popularity
wave and follows his/her own path?
A. He/She falls behind the time.
B. He/She loses good friends.
C. He/She faces all kinds of criticism.
D. He/She gains valuable popularity.
