If you are worried about things and are under a lot of stress at work or school, then you are probably
not sleeping well. Worry can keep you awake, and turning in bed until the early hours of the morning
when you eventually fall asleep. When you wake up, you don't feel refreshed, but tired and worn out and
unable to face a new day.
Dr. Henry Winkle, in a recent newspaper article entitled Stress and Sleep, indicates that stress /
worry and (lack of ) sleep are directly related. Dr. Winkle says, "The more we worry, the less we sleep,
the more we are unable to deal with stress. If we can find a way to get a good night's sleep," he adds,
"we can often find the energy to deal with what's worrying us."
So, what is a good night's sleep? Research shows that the amount of sleep which people need in order
to keep healthy varies a lot. Seven hours is about the average amount, though strangely enough, sleeping
longer often gives you a headache instead of making you feel more refreshed.
Dr. Winkle believes that preparing for sleeping is important. People who work late should try to give
themselves a short break and do something restful before going to bed. This could be watching TV or
listening to music. Doing some exercise earlier in the day should help you to feel physically as well as
mentally tired. A bedtime drink can also help, but coffee or tea should be avoided as they contain
caffeine and will keep you awake. "When you put the light out," Dr. Winkle says, "concentrate on
relaxing your muscles, working slowly up from your feet, and you'll be asleep before you know it."

A mobile phone service which makes your handset scream when it's been stolen has been started,
with its makers claiming it could put an end to mobile theft altogether.
The Remote XT system uses software to link customers' mobile phones directly to a secure remote
server, which stores all their data from phone numbers to text messages and e-mails. If the owner's phone
is lost or stolen, they can dial a 24-hour call centre and have it registered. The handset is then disabled,
and cannot even be used if a new SIM card is put in. At the same time, the system sets off an alarm
sounding like a high-pitched(尖声的) scream, which can only be stopped by removing the battery.
Existing data is also wiped off the phone but, because the information has been stored centrally,
as soon as the victim gets a news phone, the system designers said.
"By making mobiles unusable to anyone but the rightful owner the phones become worthless and we
will see the market for stolen handsets stopped once and for all," said Mark Whiteman, managing
director of Remote XT. For the moment the system is aimed at business customers and comes with a
fee of 9.99 pounds per month, possibly available to the majority of average users within two years as
mobile technology advances.
According to the latest UK government statistics, mobile phone theft has risen 190 percent in recent
years, with one third of all UK robberies now solely involving mobile phones.

I had the meanest mother in the world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal (谷类食物), eggs or toast. While others had Cokes and candy for lunch, I had to eat a sandwich. As
you can guess, my supper was different from other kids' too. But_at_least_I_wasn't_alone_in_my_
sufferings. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.
My mother insisted upon knowing where we were at all times. She had to know who our friends were and where we were going. She insisted if we said we'd be gone an hour, then we be gone one hour or
less-not one hour and one minute. And she always insisted upon us telling the truth. Now you can see
how mean she was.
The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by nine each night and up at eight the next morning.
We had to wash dishes, make beds, and learn to cook. We had to wear clean clothes and take a bath,
while the other kids always wore their clothes for days. I believe she laid awake at night thinking up mean
things to do to us.
Through the years, things didn't improve a bit. We could not lie in bed, "sick" like our friends did, and
miss school. Our marks in school had to be up to par(达到正常水平). Our friends' report cards had
beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failing. My mother, being as different as she was,
would settle for nothing less than ugly black marks.
As the years rolled by, we were one by one put to shame. We were graduated from high school.
With our mother behind us, talking, hitting and demanding respect, none of us was allowed the pleasure
of being a dropout.
My mother was a complete failure as a mother. Out of four children, a couple of us attained some
higher education. And whom do we have to blame for the terrible way we turned out? You're right, our
mean mother. She forced us to grow up into educated and honest adults.
Now I am trying to raise my three children. I am filled with pride when my children call me mean.
Because, you see, I had the meanest mother in the world.

1.  What does the sentence "But at least I wasn't alone in my sufferings." mean?
A. The author's mother was only mean to her.
B. The author's mother suffered her.
C. The author's mother was mean to her sister, brothers and her.
D. The author wasn't alone because of suffering.

2. According to the passage, the author's mother will ask her children to do all the following
    EXCEPT ________.
A. learn to cook
B. wear clean clothes
C. go to bed and get up at fixed time
D. drink as much Cokes as they want

3. Why was the author's mother mean to her children?
A. Because she wanted her children to be top students in school.
B. Because she wanted her children to bring home colored report cards like her friends did.
C. Because she wanted her children to drop out.
D. Because she wanted her children to do their best at school and be educated and respected citizens.

As the global financial crisis hits the economy, it's tough finding a job-especially if you're competing
with thousands of other hopeful students. Sometimes you get the interview, but don't quite seem to land
the job because you don't have related experience. Don't despair! Here are a few tips that might give
you an edge.
Get connected to your network and try to expand it. Talk to friends, family and acquaintances. Let
everyone know you are looking for a job.
Prepare your resume (个人简历) carefully and be sure it's perfect. Have someone else read it over
for typos (打字错误) and grammatical errors. Get professional help. It's worth the money to present
yourself well. If money is tight, read books on resume writing from your public library or search for free
help on the Internet.
When you apply for a job, be sure you match and list any skills listed on the posting with the skills
you have. If you get an interview, be sure to describe those skills thoroughly. Just having the skills is not

Research typical interview questions and practice interviewing. Be well prepared for every interview.

skills and attitude, it won't be long before you're in the job you want.
Volunteer for a few weeks in your field of study to gain experience if you feel your resume needs an
improvement.

"In only six days I lost seven pounds of weight."
"Two full inches in the first three days!"
These are the kinds of statements used in magazine, newspaper, radio and television ads, promising
new shapes and new looks to those who buy the medicine or the device. The promoters of products say
they can shape the legs, slim the face, smooth wrinkles, or in some other way to add to beauty or
desirability.
Often such products are nothing more than moneymaking things for their promoters. The results they
produce are questionable, and some are dangerous to health.
To understand how these products can be legally promoted to the public, it is necessary to
understand something of the laws covering their regulation. If the product is a drug, FDA(Food and
Drug Administration)can require proof under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act that is safe and
effective before it is put on the market. But if the product is a device, FDA has no authority to require
premarketing proof of safety or effectiveness. If a product already on the market is a danger to health,
FDA can request the producer or distributor to remove it from the market voluntarily, or it can take legal
action,  including seizure(查封)of the product.
One notable case a few years ago involved an electrical device called the Relaxacisor, which had
been sold for reducing the waistline. The Relaxacisor produced electrical shocks to the body through
contact pads. FDA took legal action against the distributor to stop the sale of the device on the grounds
that it was dangerous to health and life.
Obviously,  most of the devices on the market have never been the subject of court proceedings
(法律诉讼),  and new devices appear continually. Before buying,  it is up to the consumer to judge the
safety or effectiveness of such items.
1. It can be inferred that the ads mentioned in the text are________.
A. objective
B. costly
C. unreliable
D. illegal
2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A. The court is in charge of removing dangerous products.
B. New products are more likely to be questionable.
C. The production of a device must be approved by FDA.
D. The promoters usually just care about profits.
3. FDA can ask for the proof of safety and effectiveness of a product________.
A. if it is a drug
B. if it is a device
C. if its consumers make complaints
D. if its distributors challenge FDA's authority
4. The Relaxacisor is mentioned as________.
A. a product which was designed to produce electricity
B. a product whose distributor was involved in a legal case
C. a successful advertisement of a beauty product
D. an example of a quality beauty product
5. The author intends to________.
A. make consumers aware of the promoters' false promises
B. show the weakness of the law on product safety
C. give advice on how to keep young and beautiful
D. introduce the organization of FDA

President Coolidge's statement, "The business of America is business," still points to an important
truth today-that business institutions have more prestige(威望)in American society than any other kind
of organization, including the government. Why do business institutions possess this great prestige?
One reason is that Americans view business as being more firmly based on the ideal of competition
than other institutions in society. Since competition is seen as the major source of progress and prosperity by most Americans, competitive business institutions are respected. Competition is not only good in itself,
it is the means by which other basic American values such as individual freedom, equality of opportunity,
and hard work are protected.
Competition protects the freedom of the individual by ensuring that there is no monopoly(垄断)of
power. In contrast to one, all-powerful government, many businesses compete against each other for
profits. Theoretically, if one business tries to take unfair advantage of its customers, it will lose to
competing business which treats its customers more fairly. Where many businesses compete for the
customers' dollar, they cannot afford to treat them like inferiors or slaves.
A contrast is often made between business, which is competitive, and government, which is a
monopoly. Because business is competitive, many Americans believe that it is more supportive of
freedom than government, even though government leaders are elected by the people and business
leaders are not. Many Americans believe, then, that competition is as important, or even more important,
than democracy in preserving freedom.
Competition in business is also believed to strengthen the ideal of equality of opportunity. Competition
is seen as an open and fair race where success goes to the swiftest person regardless of his or her social
class background. Competitive success is commonly seen as the American alternative to social rank
based on family background. Business is therefore viewed as an expression of the idea of equality of
opportunity rather than the noble idea of inherited privilege.
1.The statement "The business of America is business" probably means  "________".
A. The business institutions in America are concerned with commerce
B. Business problems are of great importance to the American government
C. Business is of primary concern to Americans
D. America is a great power in world business
2. Americans believe that they can realize their personal values only ________.
A. when given equality of opportunity
B. through doing business
C. by protecting their individual freedom
D. by way of competition
3. Who can benefit from business competition?
A. Honest businessmen.
B. Both businessmen and their customers.
C. People with ideals of equality and freedom.
D. Both business institutions and government.
4. It can be inferred from the passage that the author believes _________.
A. Americans are more ambitious than people in other countries
B. in many countries success often depends on one's social status
C. American businesses are more democratic than those in other countries
D. businesses in other countries are not as competitive as those in America

Most drinks stating that they are fruitflavored (水果味道的) contain no fruit at all, while most
of the rest contain only a small quantity of fruit, according to a study carried by the British Food
Commission.
"Shoppers need to check the labels (标签) before buying drinks, though sometimes the actual
content can be nonexistent," said Food Commission spokesperson Ian Tokelove. "Food production
is highly competitive. __1__ It will increase profits, and consumers won't always realize they are
being tricked."
Flavorings are focused on the flavors of natural food products such as fruits, meats and vegetables,
or creating flavor for food products that do not have the desired flavors. Researchers analyzed the
contents of 28 strawberryflavored products sold in stores.    __2__  Of the 11 products that did
contain strawberries, five of them contained less than one percent real fruit. In addition, each juice
box contained nearly eight teaspoons of sugar.
__3__  Let's take jam as an example. Some strawberryflavored jam was labeled as containing
no artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners, but it contained absolutely no strawberries at all.
__4__  Consumers have the rights to know clearly about what they have bought. Under current
UK law, food packages do not have to distinguish between natural and artificial flavoring. "Describing
a product as strawberry flavor and covering the surface of the packet with pictures of strawberries is
misleading.   __5__ Unfortunately, it is also legal and widespread," Tokelove said. "It's time to take
measures to protect the consumers' rights."
A. The products which contain real fruit are popular with people.
B. Even products advertised as more natural often contained no fruit.
C. They found that about 60 percent of them didn't contain any fruit at all.
D. If companies can cut their costs by using flavoring, they are likely to do so.
E. It is important and necessary to demand a small amount of flavoring in the products.
F. Actually the product contains just a tiny percentage of strawberry or even no fruit at all.
