                                              Vegetables may aid the brain
A study suggests certain vegetables such as broccoli(西兰花)and spinach(菠菜)might help older
women keep their minds sharp.
Researchers have discovered that women in their 60s who eat more green leafy vegetables how less
signs of mental decline over time, reported Wednesday's CRI online.
They gave participants a bundle of tests measuring memory, oral ability and attention. The study
didn't include men, but researchers say a similar diet would likely have the same results.
Eating fish can cut risk of heart rhythm disorder
US scientists have found that eating fish can reduce the risk of deadly heartbeat disorders. They say
baked fish can effectively reduce the risk of atria fibrillation(心房颤动)among older men and women,
reported Tuesday's CRI online.
Researchers say in their 12 years of research among 4,800 people over the age of 65, they found
those who ate fish one to four times per week had an about 30 percent lower risk compared with those
who ate fish less than once a month. They say the omega-3 fatty acid can reduce the risk of a range of
heart disorders and is vital to brain development and function.
     Red wine may extend life
US scientist have found that a mixture that makes red wine a healthy drink may also hold the secret
to a longer life. They say antioxidant(抗氧化剂) in wine acted on fruited flies and worms in the same
way as a method known to extend the life of many animals, which is by sharply limiting how much they
eat.
Limiting calories has been shown to make animals such as dogs and monkeys live longer, but they
are often tired and lose productivity. The researchers will begin testing the mixture in mice.

●Get enough sleep the night before the test. 3 In a scientific study, people who got enough sleep before taking a math test did better than those who stayed up all night studying.

  ● 4 Once you have the test paper in front of you, read over the entire test, checking out how long it is and all the parts that you are expected to complete. This will allow you to estimate how much time you have for each part and ask the teacher any questions. If something seems unclear before you start, don’t worry:ask.

●Relax. 5 Of course you can’t get up and move around in the middle of a test, but you can wiggle(扭动)your fingers and toes, take four or five deep breaths, or picture yourself on a beach or some calm place.

One of the most well-known directors of our time is Stephen Spielberg. He was born in Cincinnati on 18 December 1946. His father was an electric engineer and his mother was a performing pianist. His sister, Anne Spielberg, became a screenwriter who wrote the stories for many famous films.
Stephen had always wanted to be a director ever since he was a young boy. When he was just 13 years old, he made a 40-minute film. It won a local competition. Three years later, he produced a film called Firelight, which made one hundred dollars’ profit at the cinema in his hometown. Many of the ideas from this film were later used for one of his most famous films called Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
When he was 18 years old, he wanted to go to film school so that he could improve his skills and become an even better director. Unluckily, he was unsuccessful in getting a place at this school so he went to a university in California to study English. Even though he had failed to get into the school he wanted to go to, he didn’t let this stop him following his dream to become a great director.
Stephen Spielberg has directed many films since his first major film in 1976. He now owns many different businesses, most of which are involved in the film industry.

When we think about education and language learning, we are most likely to think of books. Although there are lots of language learning methods, many people still prefer to learn only by using books. So what are the advantages of learning a language from a book?

Here are its advantages: firstly, you can take language books wherever you go conveniently and you can use them whenever you want. Secondly, they are easy to follow because the courses in them are usually planned for you in strict order starting from the most basic concepts to the more complex. Thirdly, if you are unsure of something, you can continue to work on it as quickly as you like. Lastly, books are likely to have a lot of vocabulary and a lot of topics so you will get great value out of a book with lots of materials in it.

Using books to study a language has disadvantages, too. All textbooks and dictionaries usually include some kind of pronunciation guide. These are helpful when there is no other way to learn, but this can't help you practice your pronunciation. With an audio method, you can compare your pronunciation to that of a native speaker. Besides, some words are spoken faster in one sentence or slower in another, so the pronunciation of a word may change according to the emotion or feeling you want to convey. Also, books can’t actually help you hear the language with its unique rhythms spoken by native speakers. With an audio language learning method, you will be able to hear and understand the language better.

Therefore, if you can supplemental(补充)your book with some other language tools, such as audio tapes, internet radio or resources such as music or television, you will have a much better chance of understanding the books' pronunciation guide and using it to get a good grasp of the spoken language.

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。

注意:每个空格填1个单词。

China’s Tianhe-1 has a computing speed of 2,507 trillion(万亿)calculations a second, making it the fastest computer in the world. It is also 40 percent faster than the world’s second fastest supercomputer, Cray XT5 Jaguar, in the US, kept at a national laboratory in Tennessee, according to the New York Times. Jack Dongarra, a University of Tennessee computer scientist, told NYT that the Chinese supercomputer is faster than the existing Number One machine.

Building the fastest supercomputer has become a source of national pride, as these machines are valued for their ability to solve problems in areas like defense, energy and science. These problems are related to national interests. Supercomputing technology is also found in business. Oil and gas companies use supercomputers to find oil and gas.

Obviously, research centers with large supercomputers attract top scientific talents. This adds extra importance to the machines—they’re more than just huge computers.

China’s new supercomputer will be used to speed up greatly scientific calculations, such as hurricane and tsunami modeling, cancer research, car design and even studying stars.

In 2008, two US scientists put together a step-by-step guide on how to build a supercomputer using PlayStation 3 video-game consoles(控制台). Modern supercomputers are built by combining thousands of small computer servers(服务器)and using software to turn them into one large computer. Really, any organization with enough material and technology can create a fast machine.

The Chinese system follows that model by linking thousands upon thousands of computer servers. But the secret behind the system—and the technological achievement—is China’s own networking technology. “That technology was built by them,” Dongarra said. “They are taking supercomputing very seriously and using a lot of time and money.”

“China is still a developing country,” said Sha Chaoqun, manager at Dawning Company which is the leading supercomputer maker in China. “Maybe one day, China’s total computing power can be greater than that of the US, but there is still a long way to go before we get there.”
