                                                "Happiness Advantage" Effect
In July 2010 Burt's Bees, a personal-care products company, was going through enormous
change as it began a global expansion into 19 new countries. In this kind of high-pressure situation,
many leaders bother their assistants with frequent meetings or flood their in-boxes with urgent
demands. In doing so, managers lift everyone's anxiety level, which activates the part of the brain
that processes threats and steals resources from the prefrontal cortex ( 大脑皮层), which is
responsible for effective problem solving.
Burt's Bees's then-CEO, John Wolfgang, took a different approach. Each day, he'd send out an
e-mail praising a team member for work related to global marketing. He'd interrupt his own
presentations to remind his managers to talk with their teams about the company's values. He asked
me to further a three-hour session with employees on happiness in the course of the expansion effort.
As one member of the senior team told me a year later, Wolfgang's emphasis on developing positive
leadership kept his managers actively involved and loyal as they successfully transformed the
company into a global one.
That outcome shouldn't surprise us. Research shows that when people work with a positive
mind-set (思维模式), performance on nearly every level-productivity, creativity, involvement-
improves. Yet happiness is perhaps the most misunderstood driver of performance. For one, most
people believe that success comes before happiness. "Once I get a promotion, I'll be happy," they
think. Or, "Once I hit my sales target, I'll feel great. "But because success is a moving target-as
soon as you hit your target, you raise it again-the happiness that results from success does not last
long.
In fact, it works the other way around: People who have a positive mind-set perform better in
the face of challenge. I call this the " happiness advantage"-every business outcome shows
improvement when the brain is positive. I've observed this effect in my role as a researcher and
lecturer in 48 countries on the connection between employee happiness and success. And I'm not
alone: In an analysis of 225 academic studies, researchers found strong evidence of cause-and-effect
relationship between life satisfaction and successful business outcomes.
Another common misunderstanding is that our genetics, our environment, or a combination of
the two determines how happy we are. To be sure, both factors have an impact. But one's general
sense of well-being is surprisingly unstable. The habits you form, the way you interact with
colleagues, how you think about stress-all these can be managed to increase your happiness and
your chances of success.

1. bother/ annoy
2. anxiety/ concern/ worr
3. considerate/ aware/ conscious
4. loyal/ faithful/ devoted/ committed
5. difference
6. positively
7. success/ achievements
8. strongly
9. determined/ decided
10. chances/ possibilities/ opportunities

Not even three years ago, the Treo 650 smart phone looked revolutionary. But its latest successor,
the Treo 755p Palm was made public two weeks ago, feels like a relic.
     The Treo's basic concept-uniting a cell-phone, handheld organizer, miniaturized(小型的) keyboard,
touch-sensitive screen, Web and e-mail access and media playback(播放器) in one device-make sense.
But while competitors have advanced, Palm has been napping on the train tracks.
The new Treo 755p gets online no faster than last year's model. Its basic design features few changes
from the 2004 version; its dimensions(容量) almost match those of the 2003 edition. And its operating
system and software for desktop synchronization(同步器) received their last major updates in 2002.
Over that same period of time, almost every other handheld device-Windows Mobile smart phones,
BlackBerrys, iPods and even plain old cell-phones-has seen major upgrades in capability and notable
shrinkage(缩水) in size.
     The Treo 755p (available from Sprint for $280 after a $100 mail-in rebate and with a two-year
contact) only cements Palm's status as the sick man of the smart phone business. After wasting most of
this decade on pointless reorganizations and a disastrous spin-off of its software-development group,
this company appears to have reached a state of creative bankruptcy.
As a basic organizer, the 755p remains pleasant to use. It's like a second brain that remembers
details that might otherwise slip your mind. It can pluck(采集) useful bits of data off the Internet as
needed. It can also run thousands of useful programs, many free, that enhance(提高) its utility and
entertainment value.
But you could say the same, basically, of its immensely popular predecessors(被取代的原先
的东西). This new model's main selling point-cellular(分格式的) internet connection that runs as fast
as most entry-level home broadband connections and can connect with a Bluetooth-equipped
computer-already debuted(首次露面的) on last year's Treo 700p.

1. What's the author's opinion about the Treo 650?
A. Negative.
B. Positive
C. Critical.
D. Depressive.
2. What's the common feature of Trei 755p?
A. It's a multi-function device.
B. It has a touch-sensitive screen.
C. It can be used to send e-mails.
D. It is a cell-phone.
3. What can we infer from the 4th paragraph?
A. Windows Mobile smart phones have upgrades in capability.
B. IPods are of the smallest size and the best capability.
C. BlackBerrys have the best capability compared with others.
D. The Treo has little progress compared with other handheld device.
4. What is Not the advantage the 755p has?
A. It can help us remember some details.
B. It has a great improvement in size.
C. It can be used to run some programs.
D. It can store information from the Internet.

People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial
expressions-and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.
Rachael Jack,University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly (均匀的)
across a face asWestemers do,Eastemers fix their attention on the eyes.
"We show that Eastemers and Westemers look at different face features to read facial expressions,
" Jack said." Westemers look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure.whereas Easterners favor the
eyes and neglect(忽略) the mouth. "
According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is
more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered
universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations.
The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the
eye movements of 13 Westem Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of
expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry,or neutral.
They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye
movement strategies.
It turned out that Eastemers focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more
errors than Westerners did.  "The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a
reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions,"Jack said." Our data suggest that whereas
Westemers use the whole face to convey emotion, Eastemers use the eyes more and mouth less."
In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion.  From
here on,examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion.  Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Eastemers and Westemers will find themselves lost in trans- lation.

1. The discovery shows that Westemers _______.
A. pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouth
B. consider facial expressions universally reliable
C. observe the eyes and the mouth in different ways
D. have more difficulty in recognizing facial expressions
2. What were the people asked to do in the study?
A. To make a face at each other.
B. To get their faces impressive.
C. To classify some face pictures.
D. To observe the researchers' faces.
3. What does the underlined word "they" in Paragraph 6 refer to?
A. The participants in the study.
B. The researchers of the study.
C. The errors made'during the study.
D. The data collected from the study.
4.  In comparison with Westemers,Eastemers are likely to _______
A. do translation more successfully
B. study the mouth more frequently
C. examine the eyes more attentively
D. read facial expressions more correctly
5. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. The Eye as the Window to the Soul.

The tea gardens in Sri Lanka are actually large estates. The best tea usually comes from plants grown
on high grounds, the cool hilltops with rows and rows of tea plants. The plants are about one metre apart. The plant is often pruned so that it remains only 60 to 90 centimetres high. Pruning is important because it
encourages the growth of tender shoots, or young leaves. It is from these shoots that the best tea is got.
Practically all the tea pickers are women. The estates prefer to employ women pickers because they
are more careful. Their thin fingers can easily remove the twin leaves and new shoots from the plant,
which are the parts used for processing (加工) tea. The pickers carry large baskets into which they throw
their pickings. A skilled worker can harvest between 9 to 14 kilogrammes of tea leaves a day. Usually
new shoots can be picked from the plants about every ten or fifteen days.
Processing tea shoots into the familiar dry tea leaves requires great care and skill. There are various
methods of processing depending on the type of tea required. For black tea, the young green leaves are
first spread out on shelves to dry. This process removes much of its water and the leaves become soft.
After this, the leaves are passed through heavy rollers. This operation will press the leaves for juices
which give the tea both its colour and taste. Then the leaves are spread out on floors and left to ferment
(发酵)under wet conditions. Fermentation develops the rich taste of black tea. The fermented leaves are
then dried with a hot-air blower until they become rolled-up black leaves. The final step is to sort and
grade them before the black tea is ready for sale to countries all over the world.

C. regular use of chemicals
D. growing the plants high in the mountain
2. One of the reasons why women are employed to do the picking is that        .
A. they work harder than men do in the picking
B. they can throw their pickings more easily into the baskets
C. their fingers fit them better for the job
D. they can more easily find the twin leaves
3. How many processing steps for black tea are mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. Three.
B. Four.
C. Five.
D. Six.
4. What is the writer's purpose in writing the passage?
A. To introduce various methods of tea processing.
B. To persuade readers to buy tea from Sri Lanka.
C. To tell a story that had happened in the tea gardens.
D. To inform readers of tea growing, picking and processing.

Deputy Agriculture Secretary Kathleen Merrigan sees an epidemic (流行病) sweeping across
America's farmland. It has little to do with the usual challenges, such as flood, rising fuel prices
and crop-eating insects. The country's farmers are getting older, and there are fewer people standing in
line to take their place. National agricultural census (普查) figures show that the fastest-growing group of
farmers is the part over 65. Merrigan is afraid the average age will be even higher when the 2012 statistics are completed.
Merrigan, a former college professor, is making stops at universities across the country in hopes of
encouraging more students to think about careers in agriculture. Aside from trying to stop the graying of
America's farmers, her work is made tougher by a recent blog posting that put agriculture at No. 1 on a
list of "useless" college degrees. Top federal agriculture officials are talking about the posting, and it has
the attention of agricultural organizations across the country.
"There couldn't be anything that's more incorrect," Merrigan said. "We know that there aren't enough
qualified graduates to fill the jobs that are out there in American agriculture."
In addition, a growing world population that some experts predict will require 70% more food
production by 2050, she said.
"I truly believe we're at a golden age of agriculture. Global demand is at an all-time record
high, and global supplies are at all-time record lows," said Matt Rush, director of the Texas Farm
Bureau. "Production costs are going to be valuable enough that younger people are going to have the
opportunity to be involved in agriculture."
The Department of Agriculture has programs aimed at developing more farmers and at increasing
interest in locally grown food. The National Young Farmers' Coalition has also been pushing for state and
federal policy changes to make it easier for new farmers.
Ryan Best, president of Future Farmers of America, has been living out of a suitcase, traveling
the country and visiting with high school students about careers in agriculture. The 21-year-old Best
hopes his message-that this is a new time in agriculture-will motivate the next generation to turn
around the statistics. "Never before have we had the innovations (创新) in technology which have
led to agriculture in this country being the most efficient it has ever been," he said. "There's really a place
for everybody to fit in."
1. What is the new challenge to American agriculture?
A. Fewer and older farmers.
B. Higher fuel prices.
C. More natural disasters.
D. Lower agricultural output.
2. Why is Merrigan visiting universities across the country?
A. To draw federal agriculture officials' attention.
B. To select qualified agriculture graduates.
C. To clarify a recent blog posting.
D. To talk more students into farming careers.
3. According to Matt Rush, American agriculture will provide opportunities for younger people
    because__________..
A. the government will cover production costs
B. global food supplies will be even lower
C. investment in agriculture will be profitable
D. America will increase its food export
4. What do the underlined words "to turn around the statistics" in the last paragraph mean?
A. To re-analyze the result of the national census.
B. To increase agricultural production.
C. To bring down the average age of farmers.
D. To invest more in agriculture.
