Dear Tom,

I’m glad to hear that you are considering make up with Peter. If I am you, I would consider a bike as a birthday present for him.

As far as I know it, Peter is always in poor health so he can take more exercises by riding a bike to build up his body. In the meanwhile, you can often go outing by bike together, which is helpfully in rebuilding your friendship. Beside, taking a bike is an environmentally-friendly means of transport. It’s convenient him to get around as well.

Apart from giving him the gift, you can also adopt other means, such as traveling, seeing a movie, having dinner and going shopping. No matter how you do, being sincere was the most important. I really hope that you can be good friends forever.

Best wishes!

Parties and social gatherings no longer excite us the same way they once did. This is not due to a lack of desire to socialize, but the smartphone.

At parties, more people are on their smartphones than on their drinks. According to a recent International Data Corporation study, well over half of all Americans have a smartphone and reach for it the moment they wake up, keeping it in hand all day. In addition, too many people in society are using smartphones while driving and as a result, they get into car crashes. 34 percent of teenagers admit to texting while driving, and they confirm that text messaging is their number one driving interruption. People's attachment to their smartphones is unbelievably becoming more important than the lives of themselves and others.

Just as drivers dismiss the importance of focusing while on the road, many people also fail to recognize the significance of human interaction. When with their friends, some people pointlessly check or send text messages in the presence of a friend, which sends a message to that friend: the person I am texting is more important than you. In addition, relying on our smartphones to make friends does not give us the same advantage as being able to make new friendships in the real world. Face?to?face conversations will give us much stronger communication skills in the long run.

As many people risk their lives and the lives of people around them just to send a text or mindlessly check their messages, smartphones are in many ways more dangerous to people. The quality of this technology is preventing societal achievements and weakening the value of communication. Not only is the smartphone affecting our desire to interact (交流) face?to?face, but it is also lowering society's ability to communicate.

1.The purpose of this text is to ________.

A.call for an end to use the smartphone while driving

B.appeal to us to pay attention to communication skills

C.express a concern about the overuse of the smartphone

D.advise us to be cautious about the addiction to the smartphone

2.The second paragraph is developed by ________.

A.giving examples B.listing figures

C.comparing facts D.analyzing the effects

3.The author advocates us to make new friends ________.

A.by using smartphones

B.in a face?to?face way

C.in different ways

D.under a free circumstance

4.Over?dependence on the smartphone leads to the fact that ________.

A.parties and gatherings limit their social circle

B.people are more and more narrow?minded

C.people's communication skills are weakened

D.face?to?face communication becomes less important

For anyone who is determined to be a fashion designer,it is not enough to have succeeded in college. The real test is whether they can survive, and become established during their early 20s,making a name for themselves in the real world where business skills can be as important as talent and creativity.

Fashion is a hard business. There is a continuous amount of stress because work is at a constant and extremely fast speed to prepare for the next season’s collections. It is extremely competitive and there is the constant need to make attractive advertisements of the latest fashion in newspapers and magazines. It also requires continual freshness because the appetite for new ideas is hard to satisfy.“We try to warn people before they come to us about how tough it is.” says Lydia Kemeny,Head of Fashion at St.Martin’s School of Art in London.“And we point out that drive and determination are absolutely necessary.”

This may seem far removed from the popular opinions of fashionable young people spending their time designing pretty dresses. That may well be what they do in their first year of study but a good college won’t be slow in introducing students to commercial realities,“We don’t walk our foot on the blossoming flower of creativity but in the second year we start introducing the restrictions of price, producing ability, marketing and so on.”

Almost all fashion design is done to a brief. It is not a form of self?expression as such, although there is certainly room for imagination and creativity. Most young designers are going to end up as employees of a producer or a fashion house and they still need to be able to work within the characteristic style of their employer.Even those students who are most modern in their own taste of clothes may need to adapt to produce designs which are right for the mainstream of the market. They also have to be able to work at both the expensive and the cheap end of the market and the challenge to produce good design inexpensively may well be demanding.

1.Which of the following is mainly discussed in the passage?

A.Talent in fashion.

B.Good marks at college.

C.Ability to create new designs.

D.Business skills in fashion industry.

2.What can we learn from the second paragraph?

A.Fashion designers are highly motivated and really detemined.

B.Good preparations for the next season can reduce stress.

C.Consumers’ appetite for new ideas keeps changing.

D.Advertisement business is very competitive.

3.What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A.Lydia Kemeny’s opinion.

B.The competitive business world.

C.The warning to the young designers.

D.The real situation in fashion industry.

4.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.St.Martin’s School of Art encourages the new students to design dresses they like.

B.St.Martin’s School of Art requires students to develop their creativity in their designing.

C.St.Martin’s School of Art demands students to make pretty dresses for companies.

D.St.Martin’s School of Art focuses on teaching students commercial realities.

Have you ever found yourself in his situation: You hear a song you used to sing when you were a child-a bit of nostalgia(怀旧) or “blast from the past,” as we say. But it is not a distant childhood memory. The words come back to you as clearly as when you sang them all those years ago.

Researchers at the University of Edinburgh studied the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They found that remembering words in a song was the best way to remember even one of the most difficult languages.

Here is what they did. Researchers took 60 adults and randomly divided them into three groups of 20. Then they gave the groups three different types of “listen-and-repeat” learning conditions. Researchers had one group simply speak the words. They had the second group speak the words to a rhythm, or beat. And they asked the third group to sing the words.

All three groups studied words from the Hungarian language for 15 minutes. Then they took part in a series of language tests to see what they remembered.

Why Hungarian, you ask? Researchers said they chose Hungarian because not many people know the language. It does not share any roots with Germanic or Romance languages, such as Italian or Spanish. After the tests were over, the singers came out on top. The people who learned these new Hungarian words by singing them showed a higher overall performance. They did the best in four out of five of the tests. They also performed two times better than those who simply learned the words by speaking them.

Dr. Katie Overy says singing could lead to new ways to learn a foreign language. The brain likes to remember things when they are contained in a catchy 3, or memorable 4, tune 5.

Dr. Ludke said the findings could help those who struggle to learn foreign languages. On the University of Edinburgh’s website Dr. Ludke writes, “This study provides the first experimental evidence that a listen-and-repeat singing method can support foreign language learning, and opens the door for future research in this area.”

1.The “song” mentioned in the first paragraph is intended to__________.

A. recall the past

B. attract the readers

C. introduce the topic

D. compare the childhood with the present

2.According to the passage which language doesn’t share the same root with Germanic or Romance languages?

A. Hungarian B. Spanish

C. Italian D. English

3.Based on the last two paragraphs, we can conclude that __________

A. singing is the best way to learn a language.

B. the brain probably works best when the foreign language learners sing the words.

C. a listen-repeat method is very effective for any language learner.

D. Dr. Katie Overy and Dr. Ludke disagree with each other.

4.In which situation can the finding of the research be applied?

A. A mother is going to teach her baby how to speak.

B. A child is going to have his first music lesson.

C. A student is going to learn a new English song.

D. An American is going to learn some Chinese.

Most people watching Jeremy Lin these past two months saw Jeremy Lin,New York Knicks star;but I,watching him,saw someone else. That was my elder brother,Bob,who is athletic and energetic. He could never sit still when he was in second grade;he had to get up every now and then and run around the room. And sure enough,he grew up to be a starting player for an NCAA championship lacrosse (长曲棍球) team.He was a Nike?endorsed marathoner, too, and reached the top of Mt.Everest, unguided,in his 50s.

And how did Jeremy Lin’s parents manage to do these remarkable things?Amy Chua, the tiger mother, recalls her immigrant father beating the kids whenever they mispronounced a Chinese word. How is it that Jeremy Lin’s immigrant father in particular,Gie?Ming Lin,encouraged his son to follow such an untraditional path?

One afternoon last week, I saw three tearful children from my son's school being comforted by teachers. That morning, my 11?year?old son had stomach pains, retching (干呕) into a bowl.Talking to other mothers later, I heard about other children with stomachache or difficulty sleeping the night before.

What caused so much pain? Sports day.Sports day might be necessary at a highly?competitive independent school, but not at a village primary school. For the children who can fly like the wind, sports day causes no problem. For those who are overweight or just not good at sport, it is a nightmare (噩梦).Even for those who enjoy running but fall halfway down the track in front of the entire school and their parents, it can prove a disaster.

Why do we put our children through this annual suffering? Some may say competition is character building; or it's taking part, not winning, that's important;or that it is a tradition of school life.I just felt great pity for those children in tears or in pain.

Team games at the end of sports day produced some close races, wild enthusiasm, lots of shouting — and were fun to watch.More importantly, the children who were not so fast or quick at passing the ball were hidden a little from everyone's eyes. Some of them also had the thrill of being on the winning side.

I wish that sports day could be abandoned and replaced with some other less?competitive event.Perhaps an afternoon of team games, with a few races for those who want them, would be less stressful for the children and a lot more fun to watch.

1.What can we learn about the author's son from Paragraph 1?

A.He talked with some mothers.

B.He comforted his classmates.

C.He had difficulty in sleeping.

D.He suffered from stomachache.

2.Sports day is still an annual event in this school probably because________.

A.this is an independent school

B.it is a tradition of the school

C.it helps children lose weight

D.children enjoy watching sports

3.What does the author think about team games?

A.They should include more stressful races.

B.They are acceptable to different children.

C.They should be abandoned at primary schools.

D.They are less fun for those who love running.

4.What is the author's attitude towards sports day?

A.Critical. B.Neutral.

C.Positive. D.Ambiguous.
