                                                Boys with Eating Disorders (紊乱,失调)
Why isn't Tony Eating? No one knows what Tony does at lunchtime. His friends all gather at the
dining hall where they share stories and eat. They talk about their lives and the things they have seen in
movies or read in books. But Tony doesn't care about these things, and he doesn't join them. In fact,
there is only one thing on Tony's mind -- building the perfect body. And while his friends are chatting
away, Tony is in the gym by himself, lifting weights. Now, he is able to lift more than ever. He has also
measured his arms and legs and weighed himself. He knows he is in the best shape of his life. But it's not
enough.
People say that women and girls are the ones who have body size issues, the ones who develop
eating disorders, and the ones affected most by the media pressure. It is true that women and girls are
affected more, but the same issues also affect men and boys.
There is more and more media pressure for men and boys to take on the look of the well-muscled
athletes and actors. Males are becoming uncomfortable about their physical appearance and self-image.
Sports, health, and fitness magazines focus on the importance of having muscles and the methods to
obtain those perfect sports bodies. Boys tend to do a great deal of weight training and, if they do not
see immediate results, they often turn to using steroids (类固醇) and vitamins that advertise unbelievable
muscle gain.
The average boy cannot come near meeting the impossible "standard" of the media's male body
perfection. They are not going to be Arnold Schwarzenegger or some other action star, or have the
well-muscled body of athletes. The most popular magazines carry images of women and men on the
covers that represent about 3 percent of the population. Obviously, that leaves 97 percent who cannot
measure up to that level of a desired body image.
Magazines, especially those aimed at men and boys, spread the "body building" message around.
Advertisements promote weight lifting, body building or muscle toning. The V-shaped body with great
muscles is emphasized as the ideal.
The need to make weight for a sport like boxing can cause eating disorders. The demandfor pills that
give energy and decrease a person's desire to eat is high among those needing tomake weight.
More and more health-care professionals are starting to realize the degree that boys can be
influenced by body image. One recent study showed that of boys between the ages of 7 and 9, fifty
percent wanted to reshape their body. This percentage (百分比) increases as they reach their teens and
want to take part in sports and impress girls. It is something that can follow you throughout life if you do
not learn to understand that there is more to you than your muscles and body shape.

Vans, Keds, Dollies—they sound like the names of rock bands, but if you have teenagers, you'll know they're actually the latest in teenage footwear.
But experts are now warning that the current shoe fashions will be causing teenagers discomfort in the short term and storing up years of foot, knee and back pain in the future.
Here, the experts identify the problems caused by teenagers' shoe choice.
KEDS/VANS
Slip-on shoes with elastic (弹性的)sides are particularly popular among teenage boys - with Keds and Vans the most sought-after brands.
The main problem is that they are just too flat—so flat that the heel, which strikes the ground first, also becomes damaged and painful.
BALLET PUMPS
The worst shoes of all are such light and thin dolly shoes. The problem is partly their flatness, as with Keds and Vans. However ballet pumps, which have no string or heel, have other specific problems.
“As the shoe has no fastening device, it relies on the toes to keep the shoe on, causing an awkward gait(步法), this leads to short- and long-term problems such as calluses(茧子), heel and knee pain.”
WEDGES AND STILETTOS
These shoes can also cause problems with gait. They may look good, but the heels on these are so high they can force the wearer's body weight forward, making them very unstable.
Teens who wear these shoes regularly are also in danger of joining those millions of women with constant back pain.
SCHOOL SHOES
So what do podiatrists(足科医生)have on their wish list, especially for everyday wear?
Something in a natural, breathable fabric, with a string to hold it on, with a small heel and a deep toe-box that does not press the toes, such as Clark's, Marks & Spencer or Rhino.
If your teen insists on wearing 'bad' shoes, get them some simple foot orthotics(矫形器) in the shoes. These support and correct the movement of the foot and, properly fitted by a podiatrist, can often transform their walk and halt the damage.

Nowadays, there’s a lot of debate about single sex education since it has begun to regain its popularity recently. According to long term studies of children from around the world, students achieve more and learn better in single sex schools.
An Australian study of 270,000 students found that both boys and girls performed much higher on standardized(标准化) tests when they attended separate schools. During an experiment in Virginia in 1995, 100 eighth graders were separated just for math and science courses. Almost immediately, the girls began to achieve more, become more confident and take part more often in class activities.
In 2001, a British study concluded that nearly every girl regardless of (不论) her ability or socio-economic status performed better in single sex classrooms than co-ed ones. The study of 2,954 high schools and 979 primary schools showed that while boys at the lowest levels in study improved the most in single sex schools, single sex education was particularly beneficial (有益的) to girls. Every one of the top 50 private elementary schools and top 20 private high schools in Britain are single sex schools.
Girls became more confident in themselves as students and earned higher scores on their College Board and Advanced Placement examinations. A quarter of the female members of the US Congress and one-third of all female members of Fortune 100 boards graduated from all-women’s colleges.
While the statistics are not as dramatic for boys, however, boys tend to soften their competitive edge and become more cooperative in a single sex setting. They can just be boys and not worry about what the girls might think.
Single sex education has a pleasant way of encouraging children to be fearless, to be curious, to be enthusiastic --- in short, to just be themselves. Children are subjected (屈从于) to pressures from every quarter to become adults before they are ready to do so. They grow up too quickly. Why not let them be children for a few more years? Single sex education with its gentler, more controlled social atmosphere is just the right answer for many children.

In the United States and several other countries, 2.5 million children play baseball in an organization called Little League. They play on teams in their hometowns. Their parents and other adults in the community coach or instruct them and serve as umpires to make sure that everyone follows the rules. Local businesses give money for the ball fields and the uniforms. Local teams compete against each other and the winners get to play teams that are more distant. Eventually, the top teams go to the Little League World Series.

One hundred years after Abner Doubleday invented baseball in Cooperstown, New York, in 1839, Little League got started in Pennsylvania. Three men started the game for neighborhood boys with a smaller playing field and fewer innings than adult baseball. Little League became popular after World War II when the game spread across the United States. By 1955 it was played throughout North America and within five years it had spread to Europe. Children’s baseball really caught on in Japan and Taiwan of China and teams from those areas won the World Series seven out of eight years. After this, the organization tried banning foreign teams from the World Series, but the ban came to an end after one year.

At first, Little League was only for boys aged nine to twelve. However, in 1974, the parents of girl baseball players brought a law suit. The courts ruled that Little League had to include both boys and girls. Later Little League added on softball and other games for teenagers up to age eighteen. Occasionally a Little Leaguer becomes a professional player. For example, Gary Carter went from Little League to play nineteen seasons in the Major Leagues, ten of them as an All-Star player. But, by and large, youngsters play baseball for fun and because their parents are proud of them.

1.The mothers and fathers of Little League players ______.

A. help run the games          B. travel in coaches

C. give the teams money        D. play in the World Series

2.In what year was Little League established?

A. 1839      B. 1939      C. 1955    D. 1960

3.Why do most players take part in Little League?

A. To play in the Major League.

B. To have fun and please their parents.

C. They expect a profit from All-Star games

D. They want to learn how to serve as umpires.

4.What is true about players today?

A. Little League is only for neighbourhood boys.

B. Girl players have to buy their suits.

C. Girls and boys can participate to age eighteen.

D. Children can only play until age twelve.
