A.What is earthquake?
B.The damage of earthquakes
C.How do earthquakes cause damage?
D.Where do earthquakes happen?
E.The prediction of earthquakes
F.Some misunderstanding about earthquake
61.______________
Earthquake is a kind of terrible natural disaster. An earthquake happens when rocks break and slip along a fault (断层) in the earth.Energy is given out of during an earthquake in several forms, including as movement along the fault,as heat, and as seismic waves that spread out from the “source” in all directions and cause the ground to shake, sometimes hundreds of kilometers away.
62. ______________
Most earthquake damage is caused by ground shaking. In general, large earthquakes produce ground motions with large amplitudes (振幅).Large earthquakes also produce strong shaking over much larger areas than do smaller earthquakes. The strongest earthquakes that happen can result in ground crack, causing damage to bridges, dams, roads, railroad tracks, and the foundations of buildings.Another major cause of damage is the fires that burn the buildings when power lines fall and gas lines crack. In addition, undersea earthquakes can cause great damage to seashore.
63. ______________
A common misunderstanding is that of a hole in the ground that opens during an earthquake. This has nothing to do with reality but is Hollywood’s films of earthquakes. After a strong earthquake, some cracks may be seen on the ground. These are not faults, nor are the cracks ready to close up again.Theses cracks are probably due to soil settlement (沉降) caused by the ground shaking.
64. ______________
Earthquakes happen all over the world.However,90% of the world’s earthquakes happen along these plate boundaries (边界).The “Ring of Fire” circling the Pacific Ocean, and including Canada’s west coast,is one of the most active areas in the world.
65. ______________
With the present state of scientific knowledge,it is not possible to predict (预测) earthquakes and certainly not possible to predict their exact time and location. They are greatly different from one place to another, according to many factors which are poorly understood. However,a great deal of research is being done to develop correct prediction methods.

Why should you learn Sign Language? Do you want to improve your communication with a family member or friend who is deaf? Do you want to be able to communicate with deaf people in general? Would you like to advance in your career by being able to communicate in ASL? Do you want to be a Sign Language interpreter?
Sign language is not just a random (随意的) collection of gestures but a full-blown (完全成熟的) language in its own right, complete with its own grammatical rules. Each country or region has its own sign language, as different from each other as English is from Spanish. Each version of sign language is somewhat linked to the spoken language in its region. For example, American sign language does share similarities with English, even though it is its own language.
The advantages of knowing sign language in addition to a spoken language are many. Communication becomes possible on many levels with the deaf community, with other people either hearing or not in any of the above situations, as well as many more.
While other languages take years to learn, American Sign Language can be taught in a much shorter time period. It is one of the easiest languages to learn because most of the signs were developed to mimic the actual word or phrase it is representing. Even the alphabet signs look like the letters of the English alphabet.
American Sign Language, or ASL, is the third most used language in the United States. Used by the deaf community, interpreters, and friends and family of the deaf. There are a lot of sites on the internet that not only shows you the sign with video, but will help you practice reading signs as well.
Teaching even hearing babies sign language seems to be the fashion in recent years and for good reason. Communicating in sign language is fun and natural as babies naturally use body gestures in early communication. Teaching baby sign language actually appears to enhance the learning of verbal skills and brain development of the children involved.

This brief book is aimed at high school shjeents , but speaks to anyone learning at any stage of life.
Its formal ,serious style closely matches its content ,a school-masterly bonnk on schooling .The author , W .H . Armstrong ,starts with the basics : reading and writing . In his opinion , reading doesn’t just mean recognizing each word on the page ; it means taking a sandwich and makes it a part of himself .The goal is to bring the information back to life , not just to treat it as dead facts on paper from dead trees . Reading and writing cannot be completely separated from each other ; in fact ,the aim of reading is to express the information you have got from the text .I’ve seen it again and again :some-one who can’t express an idea after reading a text is just as ineffective as someone who hasn’t read it at all.
Only a thied of the bonk remains after that discussion ,which Armstrong devotes to specific tips for studying languages ,math , science and history . He generally handles these topics thoroughly(透彻地) and equally ,except for some weakness in the science and math sections and a bit too much passion(激情) regarding history to his students , that was a hundred times more than my history teachers ever got across .to my disappointment , in this part of the book he ignores the arts .As a matter of fact ,they demand all the concentration and study that math and science do,though the study differs slightly in kind .Although it’s commonly believed that the arts can only be naturally acquired ,actually ,learning the arts is no more natural than learning French or mathematics.
My other comment is that the text aged. The first edition apparently dates to the 1960s---none of the references(参考文献)seem newer than the late 1950s. As a result, the discussion misses the entire computer age.
These are small points, though, and don’t affect the main discussion. I recommend it to any student and any teacher, including the self-taught student.
63. According to Armstrong, the goal of reading is to________.
A. gain knowledge and expand one’s view
B. understand the meaning between the lines
C. experts ideas based on what one has read
D. get information and keep it alive in memory
64. The author of the passage insists that learning the arts_________.
A. requires great efforts
B. demands real passion
C. is less natural than learning maths
D. is as natural as learning a language
65. What is a shortcoming of Armstrong’s work according to the author?
A. Some ideas are slightly contradictory.
B. There is too much discussion on studying science.
C. The style is too serious.
D. It lacks new information.
66. This passage can be classified as________.
A. an advertisement
B. a book review
C. a feature story
D. A news report

Fear can be a wonderful feeling in our lives, protecting us from dangerous situations and keeping us safe. But fear can also limit our lives significantly. While it may not be conscious, fear may make us think we are unacceptable or that what we have to offer isn’t valuable. Fear may make us feel that we are not safe being ourselves.
To avoid feeling fear, we may limit our lives greatly, living in tiny boxes. Living this way gives us the illusion(假象) of safety but leaves us with an unfulfilling life of no passion. If we shine a light on many of our fears, we see they have a very limited view of what is “safe” and how to “protect” us. Many of our fears are concerned only with protecting us from humiliation(羞辱) and failure. While these fears are doing their jobs incredibly well, they are doing so with faulty and outdated programming. Many fears we have as adults are trying to protect us as they protected us when we were children. Indeed, many of our current, automatic reactions to fear were actually formed when we were children.
Even so, it’s important not to judge ourselves for feeling these types of fears. If we judge ourselves, we will bury our fears or disguise them. By denying our fears, however, we also deny our energy, creativity and passion.
So what do we do with fear? We recognize the fear for what it is--- a feeling we’ve experienced many times in the past and a feeling we will experience many times in the future. We become very familiar with our own particular brand of fears and how we allow them to control our lives. It is especially beneficial for each of us to become aware of the particular behavior patterns we’ve adopted when we feel fear, so we can look at our reactions with a sense of humor and compassion. Then, if we wish, we can choose a different response, which can be a scary yet very exciting experience.
