Some people believe that greed and selfishness has become the basis of modern society, and we should return to the old traditions of family and community then we will have a better life. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the above opinion?
In this fast-paced world, many values are undergoing major changes. While people traditionally prioritize caring, sharing and generosity in life and work, modern people seem to be more self-absorbed and self-concerned.
Modern people act selfishly to survive the harsh competition of life. They say that it is a jungle out there. To survive, you have to fight with whatever means that come handy. Obviously greedy and selfishness go perfectly well with such ideas. In a company, employees do everything they can to get better pay and higher position, even at the cost of colleagues. We are in any way advocating any selfish conduct. It is just that people are pressured to act in a certain way due to outside influences.
In spite of common practice, it is hard to conclude that modern society is built on greed and selfishness, both of which are not newly invented vocabulary. In ancient times people also did greedy and selfish things though such behaviors were more condemned then. But we can not ignore the fact that people in the past lived a relatively more isolated life and faced less pressure compared with their modern counterparts.
Are we happier to share with others and be generous to them? There is no fixed answer either. Some people take great pleasure helping and giving to others while others feel happy doing the opposite. But I personally think that people should not be too selfish. Caring for others can actually encourage the development of a mutually beneficial relationship.
In conclusion, modern people appear to be more self-centered than those in the past due to strong outside pressure. However, we should encourage people to know the importance of being caring and generous and to build a mutually beneficial relationship with others.

The Netherlands on Monday launched its first-ever “intelligent bicycle”, fitted with a set of electronic devices (设备) to help bring down the high accident rate among elderly cyclists in this country.
The intelligent bicycle runs on electricity. Its seat shakes when other cyclists approach from behind, while the handlebars do the same when obstacles appear ahead to inform cyclists to pay attention to the danger. It also has a cradle (置物架) in which a computer can be inserted (插入), to wirelessly connect and “talk” to the bicycle through a particular application. The computer also flashes a bright signal if there is an approaching obstacle in the bicycle’s path, like a tree, or if another cyclist comes up from behind intending to pass.
A commercial-available bicycle is expected to be on the market in the next two years and should sell for between 1, 700 euros to 3, 200 euros per bicycle. It weighs about 55 pounds but researchers are working on making the on-board systems smaller.
‘‘Accidents often happen when cyclists look behind them or get frightened when they are passed at high speed,” said Maurice Kwakkernaat, one of the scientists involved in the project, “The on-board system technology has already been at work in the automotive (自动的) industry”.
“More and more elderly people are using a bicycle, not only for short distances, but also for longer distances,” Dutch Environment Minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen said, “This type of bicycle is truly needed in the Netherlands because it will help us bring down the number of elderly people who are injured every year and allow them to continue enjoying cycling,” she said.

2.When a car appears ahead, the intelligent bicycle will_________.
A. stop by itself B. make a noise
C. warn its cyclist D. change its color
3.What do you know about the intelligent bicycle?
A. It uses gas as the fuel. B. It is widely used now.
C. It will be lighter in weight. D. It will be free for everyone.
4.More and more elderly people in the Netherlands______________.
A. try to invent intelligent bicycles B. enjoy themselves by cycling

You might notice something new in the next few years as you watch Disney programs: Starting in 2016, there won’t be any candy, sugary cereal or fast-food commercials (广告) aimed at kids.
The Walt Disney Company has become the first major media company to ban(禁止) ads for junk food on its TV channels, radio stations and websites. It hopes this will stop kids from making poor food choices. First Lady Michelle Obama called it a “game changer” that is sure to send a message to the rest of the children’s entertainment industry. “Just a few years ago, if you had told me or any other mom or dad in America that our kids wouldn’t see a single ad for junk food while they watched their favorite cartoons on a major TV network, we wouldn’t have believed you, ” said the First Lady, who heads a campaign to help stop child obesity (肥胖).
The ban would apply to Disney-owned ABC stations as well as Radio Disney and Disney-owned websites aimed at families with young children. In addition, Disney plans to make changes to its kids’ menus at theme parks and resorts (度假胜地). Fast-food options will be replaced with healthier choices, such as smoothies (果汁), apples, vegetables and yogurt.
In addition to candy bars and fast-food meals, other foods that don’t meet Disney’s nutritional standards will be banned from the company’s kid-targeted media. Any cereal with 10 grams or more of sugar per serving will be off the air. There will be no ads for full meals of more than 600 calories. Juices with high levels of sugar and foods with too much salt will also be pulled.
Leslie Goodman, Disney’s senior vice-president of Corporate Citizenship, said a company that wants to advertise will need to show that it offers a range of healthy options.
Disney isn’t the only one pushing away unhealthy foods. Last week, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg suggested a ban on drinks over 16 ounces sold in movie theaters, restaurants and convenience stores in the Big Apple. He says large, sugary drinks are partly to blame for obesity.

I was 20 years old when my mother passed away.It was the first real blow that life had dealt me,and I thought I would never recover. Then,by the time the following spring came, the pain was almost bearable and again I could find pleasure in the miraculous reward of nature.
At first,I went to the cemetery with trepidation. But then, amazingly,by tending her grave and decorating it with flowers,I was ridding myself of the painful memories.
The years passed.I moved from Kaposvar,Hungary, the town where I had been born and had spent my youth. So did my siblings. We only came together on feast days, especially on All Souls’ Day in the cemetery.
Father lived with me for many years,to a ripe old age.Now that he,too, rests beneath the white marble stone,I go even more eagerly to the cemetery. While I tend my parents’ grave site, again I am with them in thought.
One day I noticed a modest grave site behind my parents’ plot.It lay among the magnificent granite and marble markers of the other graves, its very simplicity calling attention to itself.Ivy(常春藤) had covered the site and its only decoration was a simple wooden cross on which was written in copper letters a name, and that she lived 22 years.Whenever I went by,the plot and its surroundings looked cared for and neat, and each time I felt curious about this mysterious woman who had lived all of 22 years.
Once I saw an elderly man leaving from there.I concluded that perhaps he had come to visit his wife.In 1996 I was preparing for All Souls’ Day in the cemetery when again I caught sight of him, tending the grave.Tall, somewhat bent,he was well passed middle age.We nodded to each other and continued our work.Occasionally I stole a glance at my neighbor. When I noticed that he hadn’t got the tools for a proper cleanup,I offered him mine, which he gratefully accepted. After this,it seemed only natural to engage him in conversation.I asked him whose grave it was. This was his answer:
“My mother’s.She died young,in 1912 when I was only a year?and?a half old.I really never knew her.I made her that cross and the copper letters.”
Then he went on:“No one comes to visit this grave but me because I was her only child. She died of pneumonia. My father remarried and my stepmother only cared for her own children. So then I always came here to my mother, whether in sadness or in joy.Later, life took me far afield, but I never forgot this grave. For me it was the same as the family home is for others.I always came home here.”
“With the years passing,it is getting more difficult for me to come, but as long as my legs will carry me,at least twice a year I visit my mother.I’m in my 80s,so who knows how long I can still make it.”
In stunned silence I listened.Tears clouded my eyes as I realized that I had never seen such boundless love. How much easier is my lot,I thought, for at any moment I can reach into my storehouse of memories and draw out the joyful or sad vignettes(小插图) that bind me to my parents with a thousand threads. What memories might this kindly old gentleman harbor?Perhaps a face from an ancient faded photograph of his mother.
What a great attachment throughout his long life must have led him back again and again to the resting place of that young woman whose motherly love he could never truly savor(尝到),only forever feels its enormous lack.
We said good?bye.I was deeply moved because I knew that I had been given a great gift.I had been allowed a glimpse of the royal and long?lasting affection that bound a simple and noble?hearted man to his mother.I decided I would tend the grave together with that of my parents, where, finally, the aged child will have met his youthful mother.

Few kids today are taught the value of empathy (同感;同情心). It seems so hard for people to show their love and care toward others and to actually understand what they are going through.
As a child I was taught to go out of my way to make someone else happy. My mom would tell me to say at least one kind word to someone else every day. I admit that it wasn’t very easy to do. But as soon as you see the look of gratitude (感激) in that person’s eyes, you just want to do as much as you can.
I had an experience with a guy that people were always making fun of. Every time I saw that happening, I knew in my heart that it was wrong. I decided I would try to be his friend. I started walking with him and introducing him to people around us. I was making him happy by just doing that. And I loved the fact that I was really making a difference in his life.
After a while I realized that he wasn’t the kind of person everybody thought he was. We are still really good friends today. People have almost completely stopped making fun of him. But he is still what he was. What had changed was the attitudes of others toward him.
From this experience I’ve learned to be more loving toward other people. What I did for my friend was so easy. And at the same time I had a lot of fun. So I hope that everyone could say a kind word to someone else at least once a day.
I can promise it will be the best feeling you can ever get.
One kind word could make someone’s day brighter.
1.We can learn from the fourth paragraph that .

2.The last two paragraphs suggest that _______.
A. saying a kind word will give you friendship and fun
B. it is really a hard thing to say a kind word to others
C. having a lot of fun in life will help to make a good life
D. a kind word may benefit both the speaker and the listener
3.What does the writer focus on in this passage?
A. Understanding. B. Friendship.
