    8．For many young people，adulthood means being ordinary and struggling under a lot of responsibilities．
    "Being an adult is no fun，"says Katrina，an 18-year-old girl from Munich who refused to give her full name．"As an adult you're no longer funny-you're a serious person．Adults stop going to parties every weekend．They wear normal clothes and have to think a lot．"
    Generally speaking，an adult is seen largely as someone able and ready to take over responsibility for his or her life．An adult should also be able to form relationships and to get on well in groups．Money independence is important too：Being an adult means being able to run a household and earn a living．The law states quite simply that at 18 a person becomes an adult，but that may have little to do with the person's own belief．
       US author，Robert W．Bly，commented about the same problem in his 1997 book，The Sibling Society："Adults return to adolescence； and adolescents have no desire to become adults．"He is concerned about the loss of appropriate adult role models and the broken lines of communication between the generations．This results in immature behaviour and a generation of"half adults"．
       Another decisive factor in the growing-up process is the act of leaving the parental home．"Mothers especially find it difficult to let go of their children，"says Bly．"Young people with a close relationship to their mothers often feel themselves unable，even at the age of 20，to make it alone．"
    Another possible cause for anxiety at getting older is the youth culture in our society．Youthfulness is associated with performance，and only those who perform are worth anything．The repetition in the press and advertising contributes to this idea．"If you are young，attractive and dynamic，you'll make it in this society．"No wonder that getting older causes anxiety．
