Cooks around the globe like it; housewives have used it for centuries to add flavor to their cooking and grandmothers have always had some doubt about what our science has found out about it. Chinese garlic(大蒜) is a wonder drug.

Garlic is one of the most effective and common medicines for the common cold. The best way to eat it is in hot soup, but another interesting way is to put some slices of raw garlic over bread. It helps clear up the nose as well as decongesting (解除充血) the chest. In fact, a slice of raw garlic eaten every day keeps almost all illness away. But most of us are quite afraid of its strong smell so we do not take this seriously.

There is a word of caution, however. Since it is a warming and drying herb, people with a hot body should use it carefully. For some people, garlic may cause stomach pains or some other problems. Also in many cases, garlic has been known to make conditions like sleeplessness even worse. It can affect the mind and concentration, so garlic is best avoided for people performing activities that require concentration. People who easily get angry or have a red face should use garlic carefully.

In many cases, garlic may cause heat in the body. Also, because it has such strong chemical elements, some people simply cannot stand it.

Another point of caution is that since it is a blood-thinning agent, patients are advised to consult their doctors before they start taking garlic in regular quantities. In a healthy person, its intake can keep a person free of all kinds of physical discomfort over a long period of time.

A characteristic of American culture that has become almost a tradition is to respect the self-made man-the man who has risen to the top through his own efforts, usually beginning by working with his hands. While the leader in business or industry or the college professor occupies a higher social position and commands greater respect in the community than the common laborer or even the skilled factory worker, he may take pains to point out that his father started life in America as a farmer or laborer of some sort.

This attitude toward manual(体力的)labor is now still seen in many aspects of American life. One is invited to dinner at a home that is not only comfortably but even luxuriously(豪华地)furnished and in which there is every evidence of the fact that the family has been able to afford foreign travel, expensive hobbies, and college education for the children; yet the hostess probably will cook the dinner herself, will serve it herself and will wash dishes afterward, furthermore the dinner will not consist merely of something quickly and easily got from contents of various cans and a cake or a pie bought at the nearby bakery. On the contrary, the hostess usually takes pride in careful preparation of special dishes.A professional man may talk about washing the car, digging in his flowerbeds, painting the house. His wife may even help with these things, just as he often helps her with the dishwashing. The son who is away at college may wait on table and wash dishes for his living, or during the summer he may work with a construction gang on a highway in order to pay for his education.

科目:高中英语 来源:2010年江苏省淮州中学高二下学期期末考试英语 题型:阅读理解

Poverty exists because our society is an unequal one, and there are plenty of political pressures to keep it that way. Any attempt to redistribute wealth and income in the United States will be opposed by powerful middle and upper class interests. People can be relatively rich only if others are relatively poor, and since power is concentrated in the hands of the rich, public policies will continue to reflect their interests rather than those of the poor.
As Herbert Gans has pointed out, poverty is actually functional form from the point of view of the non-poor. Poverty ensures that ‘dirty’ work gets done. If there were no poor people to clean floors and empty dustbins, these jobs would have to be rewarded with high incomes before anyone would touch them. Poverty creates jobs for many of the non-poor, such as police officers, welfare workers, and government officials. Poverty makes life easier for the rich by providing them with cooks, gardeners and other workers to perform basic work while their employers enjoy more pleasurable activities. Poverty provides a market for low-level goods and services, such as day-old bread, rundown automobiles. Poverty legitimizes (make legal) middle-class values. To the middle class, the fate of the poor---who are supposed to lack honesty, and a taste of hard work---only confirms the desirability of qualities the poor are thought to lack. Poverty also provides a group that can be made to absorb the costs of change. For example, the poor bear the pressure of unemployment and it’s their homes, not those of the wealthy, that are destroyed when a route has to be found for a new highway. It cannot be said that the wealthy keep the poor in poverty. It is just that poverty is an outcome of the American economic system, which the poor are politically powerless to influence or change.
