This August has seen athletes doing their sweaty part in the "Good Luck Beijing" sports events. Some foreign athletes have commented on the passion of Chinese spectators(观众).

Not all the spectators, however, came out looking exactly good. Girls holding umbrellas on beach volleyball stands. Spectators crying sharply during the hockey matches. These can be unintended disturb. To avoid them, we’d keep in mind some special manners:

Beach volleyball

→Dress down for beach volleyball. Don’t you think it funny to walk about on the beach in formal suits?

→Wear sunglasses and bring something to drink.

→Use sunblock for your skin. But don’t carry something that blocks others’ view.

Archery & shooting

→Sit at the back or on either side of the field. For safety’s sake, do not risk out of there.     →Above all, keep quiet during the match. Put your cellphone on vibrate or turn it off.

→Do not use the flash on your camera, because it can disturb the athletes.

→When the athletes are aiming at the target, keep your voice down.

Baseball, basketball & football

→Drinks in glass bottles or cans are not allowed.

→Don’t bring a whistle. Referees use them and you can puzzle the players.

→Players can be tense when taking a shot. Keep the cheering down and do not use the camera flash at critical moments.

→If you easily get nervous, bring some snacks. Keep your mouth moving to calm you down.     Cycling & marathon

→Spectators should keep off the track. Control your pets.

→Cyclists or runners might look tired, sweaty and thirsty, but, do not hand them a bottle of water, a cool towel or anything else. Any help from spectators can disqualify(剥夺资格)an athlete.

→Again, if a cyclist or runner falls, do not rush over to help. The best thing to do is to contact medical personnel.

It will be hot—hot enough that most locals will have cleared town for cooler places. But because athletes competing at the 2004 Olympics have no choice but to stay in the hot weather, many plan to turn to science to stay cool.?

Some will put their hands in ice water just before competing and nearly all will be wearing fabrics(织物) designed with hot weather in mind.?

“Normally we warm up before exercise,”said Gordon Sleivert, director of sports science and medicine at the Canadian Sport Center in Victoria, British Columbia.“But in this case we're taking the warm out of warm up. It's like pre-cooling.”

Experts are predicting(预测) the average high this August in Athens will be 90 degrees Fahrenheit, with temperatures often reaching above 100(the average temperature in Sydney for the 2000 summer games was 64).?

Although some events, such as the marathon, will start early(1 a.m.) to avoid hot weather, other competitors will be pushing their limits during high temperatures.?       Drinking lots of water will help athletes keep cool, but humidity(湿度) remains a problem. The body's ability to cool down is weakened by damp air since sweat drips off the skin rather than evaporates(蒸发),resulting in dehydration(脱水) without the cooling.?

“Getting hot is a real problem because when our brains heats up, the brain waves are more like when you're really sleepy. Everything feels harder,” said Sleivert.

The passage mainly tells us that _______.

A. why it is very hot in Athens?

B. the hot weather is a big problem for Olympic athletes?

C. how important science is to every athlete?

D. the Olympics will be put off because of the hot weather?

The underlined sentence “other competitors will be pushing their limits during high temperatures”in the fifth paragraph means _______.?

A. Olympic athletes will put off their competition time?

B. some events in the Olympics will have to be put forward?

C. competitors can't reach their limits in the hot weather?

D. competitors will have to try their best to compete under any condition?

The following things will be likely to happen in the hot weather EXCEPT _______.

A. dehydration?

B. being sleepy?

C. that the blood in the body can become less and less?

D. that the body's ability to cool down is weakened

Scientists have not come close to understanding all the different kinds of life on the planet, but US researcher Craig Venter is already working on creating the first artificial life.
Venter and his researchers made a breakthrough this August. They successfully moved the DNA of one type of bacteria(细菌) to a yeast(酵母) cell, changed it, then put it into another bacterial cell.
“Bacteria have systems that protect them from foreign DNA,” Venter explained to the BBC. In the experiment, the team managed to block this system.
The experiment was performed on a simple type of bacteria called Mycoplasma mycoides. The team took the bacteria’s genes and put them into a yeast cell.
Putting the DNA in a yeast cell allowed the team to change the genes----in this case, taking out a gene that was not necessary for the bacteria to live.
They then put the gene into a host bacteria cell. The cell went on to divide normally, producing new healthy bacteria.
In January, the team created artificial genes of a new type of bacteria. Their next goal is to put the artificial DNA into a host cell to create a new species, according to a report in Science magazine.
“If we don’t make any errors, I think it should work and we should have the first artificial species by the end of the year,” Venter said in the report.
The first artificial life from is likely to be a simple man-made bacteria, to prove that the technology can work. But that form will be followed by more complex bacteria that turn coal into cleaner natural gas, or algae that can take in carbon dioxide and change it into fuel.
Many scientists think it’s good news to have this artificial life, but others are worried that the technology to create new organisms might end up in the wrong hands, with dangerous results.

Many Americans take their summer vacations in August. President Obama and his family are among them. This August the first family visited the Florida Gulf Coast. The president wants to promote tourism in the area after the BP oil spill (漏油). The first family took a ten-day vacation on Martha’s Vineyard, an island off the coast of Massachusetts.

Martha’s Vineyard is known for the sailing, sunsets and its tall cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The island is about 13 kilometers off the coast and is less than 260 square kilometers. Homes designed like those of earlier times line the streets of Edgartown, Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven. These are the major towns on Martha’s Vineyard.

For most of the year, the population of Martha’s Vineyard is about 15 000. In summer, more than 100 000 people crowd the island. In addition to the Obamas, you might see some Hollywood stars and other rich and famous people. Many visitors return year after year.

During warm weather the Vineyard is a good place for many different activities. People can play golf or catch fish. They can ride in sailboats or motor boats. They can waterski and swim. They can take quiet walks along sandy beaches and among the thick green trees.

One of the popular places for families with children is the Flying Horses Carousel in Oak Bluffs. It is the oldest continually operated merry-go-round ride in the United States. The colorful wood horses that turn in a circle were created in 1876. One of the best places for children to swim is the Joseph A. Sylvia state beach. The water there is warmer and calmer. Families also enjoy the Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary where they can observe much of the island wildlife.

Visitors watch the sunsets sitting on the beach and on rocks in the fishing village of Menemsha. As the sun goes down in the sky it paints yellow, red, and other colors on the clouds. Fishing boats rise and fall with the waves. Bells sound to help guide the boats to land as darkness covers the water.

Historians say British mapmaker Bartholomew Gosnold first made a map of the island for the rulers of England in 1602. Gosnold named the island to honor his baby daughter, Martha. The Vineyard part of the name came from the many wild grape vines Gosnold found on the island. Later, King Charles of England gave the island to businessman Thomas Mayhew of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, whose son established the first European settlement on the island in 1642. By the middle of the nineteenth century, ships from the American mainland began bringing visitors to the island. Big hotels were built near the edge of the water. Martha’s Vineyard was on its way to becoming the visitors center that it is today.

B. the BP oil spill has contributed to the tourism along the Florida Gulf Coast

D. this was the first time that President Obama and his family had taken the vacation on Martha’s Vineyard

2..

Which month is the peak time for tourism in Martha’s Vineyard?

A. January.          B. August.          C. December.            D. March,

3..
