Dear Mr. Zhang,

We have held a discussion about whether it is good or not for a top student to share a desk with a slower student.

Some are for the idea. As they know, everyone has strengths as well as weaknesses. Although they are not good at lessons, they might do well in other fields like sports or arts. Therefore, they can learn from each other, and they may develop a friendship. In addition, top students can help slower ones gain self-confidence by helping them with their lessons, which benefits them all.

However, others don¡¯t hold the same view. They think some slower students are always making trouble, such as keeping talking in class, breaking school rules, which may lead to them forming the bad habits. Besides, slower students often ask top students questions, which has a bad effect on their studies.

In my opinion, I¡¯d like to choose to share a desk with a slower student so that we can learn from each other and make progress together.

Yours,

Li Ping

Most people today think of chocolate as something sweet to eat or drink and can be easily found in stores around the world. It might surprise you that chocolate was once highly treasured.

The wealthy people of Spain first enjoyed a sweetened chocolate drink. Later, the popularity of the drink spread throughout Europe. Chocolate remained a drink that only wealthy people could afford to drink until the eighteenth century. During the period known as the Industrial Revolution, new technologies helped make chocolate less costly to produce.

Farmers grow cacao trees in many countries in Africa, Central and South America, but these trees are difficult to grow. They require an exact amount of water, warmth, soil and protection. After about five years, cacao trees start producing large fruits called pods, which grow near the trunk of the tree. The seeds inside these pods are harvested to make chocolate. Growing cacao is very hard work for farmers. Today, chocolate industry officials, activists, and scientists are working with farmers. They are trying to make sure that cacao can be grown in a way that is easy for the farmers and safe for the environment.

The market value of the yearly cacao crop around the world is more than five billion dollars. Chocolate is especially popular in Europe and the United States. Each year, Americans eat an average of more than 5 kilograms of chocolate per person. Specialty shops that sell costly chocolate are also very popular. Many offer chocolate lovers the chance to taste chocolate grown in different areas of the world.

Unlike modern animal scientists, dinosaur scientists cannot sit on a hillside and use telescopes to watch dinosaurs in order to know how they lived and whether they were good parents. Instead, they have to search hard for information from dinosaurs¡¯ fossils (¿ÖÁú»¯Ê¯) because dinosaurs died out millions of years ago.

It¡¯s very difficult for the scientists to reach an agreement because different results can be got from the same fossils. Many fossils of the same kind of dinosaurs have been dug out from one place. They might have formed when an entire group of dinosaurs got stuck (ÏÝÈë) all at once, or they might have been the result of dinosaurs getting stuck one after another over a course of a few centuries. Thus we can say that dinosaurs might have in the first case lived in big groups and in the second lived alone.

Though there are two different results, dinosaur scientists now generally agree that at least some kinds of dinosaurs lived in big groups. ¡°That¡¯s pretty much settled at this point,¡± says Paul Sereno. A kind of dinosaurs called Sauropods left behind tracks in the western United States that appear to run north and south, suggesting that they even moved long distances together.

As to whether dinosaurs cared for their young, dinosaur scientists have turned to the closest living relatives of dinosaurs-birds and crocodiles-for possible models. Birds give a lot of care to their young, while crocodiles just help their young to the water. The discovered fossils of dinosaurs sitting on their eggs and staying with their young suggest the parents were taking care of their babies, but we still cannot say that all dinosaurs did the same.

There is still a long way to go before the above questions could be answered. Dinosaur scientists, will have to find more proof to reach an agreement.

1.Dinosaur scientists can get information directly by .

A. studying dinosaur fossils

B. examining modern animals

C. watching dinosaurs

D. using telescopes

2.What is pretty much settled according to Paul Sereno?

A. Half of the dinosaurs lived alone.

B. Most dinosaurs moved long distances.

C. Many dinosaurs settled in the north.

D. Some dinosaurs lived in big groups.

3.Dinosaur scientists can probably know whether dinosaurs were good parents by .

A. watching many kinds of animals

B. studying dinosaurs¡¯ living relatives

C. following the tracks left behind

D. working on dug-out dinosaur eggs

4.Which of the following is TRUE according to the 4th paragraph?

A. Birds hardly pay attention to their young.

B. Baby crocodiles can look after themselves well.

C. Some dinosaurs took care of their young.

D. Birds and crocodiles take good care of their young.

About ten men in every hundred suffer from color blindness in some way. Women are luckier; only about one in two hundred is affected in this matter. Perhaps, after all, it is safer to be driven by a woman!

There are different forms of color blindness. In some cases a man may not be able to see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shadows of green. Sometimes a person cannot tell the difference between blue and green. In rare cases an unlucky man may see everything in shades of green--a strange world indeed.

Color blindness in human beings is a strange thing to explain. In a single eye there are millions of very small things called ¡°cones¡±. These help us to see in a bright light and to tell difference between colors. There are also millions of ¡°rods¡±, but these are used for seeing when it is near dark. They show us shape but no color.

Some insects have favorite colors. Mosquitoes prefer blue to yellow. A red light will not attract insects, but a blue lamp will. In a similar way human beings also have favorite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the aid of the cones in our eyes we can see many beautiful colors by day, and with the aid of the rods we can see shapes at night. One day we may even learn more about the invisible colors around us.

1.The passage is mainly about _____________.

A. color and its surprising effects.

B. women being luckier than men

C. danger caused by color blindness

D. color blindness

2.According to the passage, with the help of the ¡°cones¡±, we can____________.

A. tell different shapes

B. see in a weak light

C. kill mosquitoes

D. tell orange from yellow

3.Why do some people say it is safer to be driven by women?

A. Women are more careful.

B. There are fewer color-blind women

C. Women are fonder of driving than men.

D. Women are weaker but quicker in thinking.

4.Which of the statements about the color- blind is true?

A. Not all of them have the same problem in recognizing color.

B. None of them can see deep red.

C. None of them can tell the difference between blue and green.

D. All of them see everything in shades of green.

5.We can attract and kill mosquitoes by using a __________.

A. red light B. yellow light

C. blue light D. green light

Going green seems to be fad(ʱÉÐ)for a lot of people these days. Whether that is good or bad, we can¡¯t really say, but for the tow of us, going green is not a fad but a lifestyle.

On April22, 2011, we decided to go green every single day for an entire year. This meant doing 365 different green things, and it also meant challenging ourselves to go green beyond easy things. Rather than recycle and reduce our energy, we had to think of 365 different green things to do and this was no easy task.

With the idea of going green every single day for a year, Our Green Year started. My life and I decided to educate people about how they could go green in their lives and hoped we could show people all the green things that could be done to help the environment. We wanted to push the message that every little bit helps.

Over the course of Our Green Year, we completely changed our lifestyle. We now shop at organic(ÓлúµÄ)stores. We consume less meat, choosing green food. We have greatly reduced our buying we don¡¯t need. We have given away half of what we owned through websites. Our home is kept clean by vinegar and lemon juice, with no chemical cleaners. We make our own butter, enjoying the smell of home-made fresh bread. In our home office anyone caught doing something ungreen might be punished.

Our minds have been changed by Our Green Year. We are grateful for the chance to have been able to go green and educate others. We believe that we do have the power to change things and help our planet.

1.What might be the best title for the passage?

A. Going Green.

B. Protecting the Planet.

C. Keeping Open-Minded

D. Celebrating Our Green Year.

2.It was difficult for the couple to live a green life for the whole year because_________.

A. they needed to perform unusual green tasks

B. they didn¡¯t know how to educate other people

C. they were unwilling to reduce their energy

D. they were expected to follow the green fad

3.What did the couple do over the course of Our Green Year?

A. They tried to get out of their ungreen habits.

B. They ignore others¡¯ ungreen behavior.

C. They chose better chemical cleaners.

D. They sold their home-made food.

4.What can we infer form the last paragraph?

A. The government will give support to the green people.

B. The couple may continue their project in the future.

C. Some people disagree with the couple¡¯s green ideas.

D. Our Green Year is becoming a national campaign.
