12.I wish there would be a way to describe China in simple terms but that's impossible. For the most part Chinese people are friendly,easy-going and optimistic. They are curious and unusually patient and they are also the hardest-working people I have ever met.
In China, family is everything. In my English classes when the students were asked what they would do if they only had a few hours to live, most students told me how they would spend their last few hours with their families and parents. Many times the subjects in the classes center on families and friends.I teach many students a year, talking to them freely.
The cost of living here is very low compared with that of the US.The city of Xiang Fan I live in isn't large and I live better.Non-imported(非出口的) foods are very cheap,so are clothing and articles of everyday use.The cost of public transportation is very low, too.Chinese value education. However,it is reported that many children can't afford the expenses of schooling and are forced to leave school in some poor area in China. But they organized Project Hope many years age.It creates conditions for the poor children to go back to school. In my opinion,Project Hope is of great importance to the development of the rural education.
When we read news of China in the west, rarely,if ever, will we see anything mentioned of the positive changes China has gone through. While it is true that economic miracles have not reached many areas of China, but we also have the same problems.
When I am asked which country I consider better.China or the US,my answer has always been the same,"We are not worse or better than each other,we are only different."

4.During the last four days my family was celebrating a marriage.A cousin of mine came all the way from Florida to Brazil with his bride because they wanted to marry here.Today,the fourth day of partying,everybody went to a country house,which is where the newly-wed couple is staying.
Just as night fell,I was wandering around a swimming pool when I saw a group of my youngest cousins (three boys aged 6,9,and 14,and a girl who was 12,I'm 22),and they were talking about school.Specifically,they were cursing Math.I was curious and asked them what subjects they liked.Physics was a top of the list,which is an oxymoron(矛盾),for when people like Physics and dislike Math,there is clearly something amiss(不正常).
One thing I have to say about our schools is that most of them don't care much about what students feel when they're being"educated".As long as everybody's getting good grades and the older boys and girls are getting past colleges'admission exams,everything is fine.My point is that being force-fed knowledge in annoying and painful ways causes people to forget all about the subject right after the tests,and even worse,they generate hatred and grief towards precious knowledge.It was quite obvious,the reason why the kids didn't like Math; instead of being stimulated towards learning it with a passion,they had to behave as little turning machines which would read a formula on one piece of text,and give an output right below the question,with no understanding of the logic involved.In a cruel Pavlovian(巴甫洛夫学说的) system,they were punished (read:failed exams   for inaccurate outputs,and rewarded for correct answers.

46.Where were they celebrating the marriage?C
A.In England.  B.In Florida.  C.In Brazil.  D.In China.
47.The author isC years older than his girl cousin.
A.22              B.12                C.IO              D:8
48.The underlined word"cursing"meansB.
A.like              B.hate               C.love             D.excuse
49.The author thinks the problem in their schools isB.
A.students like Physics but dislike Math
B.schools do not care about students''feeling
C.students have less free time
D.schools shouldn't teach students all the subjects
50.From the text we may know that the author agrees thatC.
A.students shouldn't be educated at all
B.schools must teach students all the subjects they may use in the future
C.students should be well educated based on their interest
D.school should be opened to the public.

2.Write a winning story!
You could win£1,000in this year's Fiction Prize and have your story printed in Keep Writing magazine.Ten other lucky people will win a cheque for£100.
Once again,we need people who can write good stories.The judges,who include Mary Littlejohn,the novelist,Michael Brown,the television reporter,and Susan Hitchins,the editor of Keep Writing,are looking for interesting and original stories.Detective fiction was extremely popular last year,although the competition winner produced a love story.You can write down about whatever you want but here's some advice to start your thinking:
Write about what you know
This is the advice which every writer should pay attention to and,last year,nearly everyone who wrote for us did exactly that.Love,family,problems with friends----these were the main subjects of the stories.However,you need to turn ordinary situations into something interesting that people will want to read about.Make the reader want to continue reading by writing about ordinary things in a new and surprising way.
Get your facts right
It's no good giving a description of a town or explaining how a jet engine works if you get it wrong.So avoid writing anything unless you're certain about it.
Hold the reader's attention
Make the beginning interesting and the ending a surprise.There is nothing worse than a poor ending.Develop the story carefully and try to think of something unusual happening at the end.
Think about the characters
Try to bring the people in your story alive for the reader by using well-chosen words to make them seem real.
Your story must be your own work,between 2,000and 2,5000words and typed,double-spaced,on one side only of each sheet of paper.
Even if you're in danger of missing the closing date,we are unable to accept stories by fax or email.You must include the application form with your story.Unfortunately your story cannot be returned,nor can we discuss our decisions.
You should not have had any fiction printed in any magazine or book in this country----a change in the rules by popular request----and the story must not have happened in print or in recorded form,for example on radio or TV,anywhere in the world.
Your fee of£5will go to the Writers'Association.Make your cheque payable to Keep Writing and send it with the application form and your story to:
Keep Writing
75Broad Street Birmingham
B12 4TG
The closing date is 30July and we will inform the winner within one month of this date.Please note that if you win,you must agree to have your story printed in our magazine.
