Howling is a behavior commonly observed among a wolf pack. As pack animals, wolves work together to hunt and rely on howling as an important means of communication among each other. There are different explanations of a wolf’s howl and it appears that there may be more to discover.

One theory is that wolves howl to bond better together. It’s almost as if howling together helps the pack stay together. Perhaps it’s something similar to people feeling a sense of involvement with each other when singing a song together. But this theory may be wrong, explains Fred H. Harrington, a professor who studies wolf behavior.

Indeed, there have been times when wolves have been seen one moment howling in a chorus, and the next, quarreling among each other. It appears that usually the lowest-ranking members of the pack may actually be “punished” for joining in the chorus at times. So is howling a way to strengthen a social bond or just a way to reconfirm (重新确认) status among its members? —Why do wolves howl for sure?

What is clear, however, is that howling is often used among packmates to locate each other. Hunting grounds are distant and it happens that wolves may separate from one another at times. When this happens, howling appears to be an excellent means of gathering.

Howling, interestingly, is a contagious behavior. When one wolf starts to howl, very likely others will follow. This is often seen to happen in the morning, as if wolves were doing some sort of “roll call” where wolves all howl together to report their presence.

1. What is the possible similarity between wolves’ howling together and human’s singing in chorus?

A. The act of calling each other.

B. The sense of accomplishment.

C. The act of hunting for something.

D. The sense of belonging to a group.

2. Why does Harrington think the “social bond” theory may be wrong?

A. Wolves tend to protect their hunting grounds.

B. Wolves separate from each other after howling.

C. Wolves sometimes have quarrels after howling together.

D. Wolves of low rank are encouraged to join in the chorus.

3.Researchers are sure that wolves often howl to______.

A.show their ranks

B. find their companions

C. report the missing ones

D. express their loneliness

4.The underlined sentence in the last paragraph probably means_______.

A. howling is a signal for hunting

B. howling is a way of communication

C. howling often happens in the morning

D. howling spreads from one to another

Katie was in big trouble. She was such a sweet kid; a third-grade teacher always dreams of having a classroom filled with Katies; she was never a discipline problem. I just couldn’t imagine what she had done to make her parents so angry.

It seemed that Katie had been running up sizable charges in the lunchroom. Her parents explained that Katie brought a great homemade lunch each day, and there was no reason for her to buy school lunch. They assumed a sit-down with Katie would solve the problem. But it was of no use. So they asked me to help them get to the bottom of this situation.

So the next day, I asked Katie to my office. “Why are you charging lunches, Katie? What happened to your homemade?” I asked. “I lose it,” she responded. “Every day?” “Every day.” I leaned back in my chair and said, “I don’t believe you, Katie.” She didn’t care…“Is someone stealing your lunch, Katie?” I took a new track. “No. I just lose it,” she said. Well, there was nothing else I could do.

The problem was still unsolved the next week when I noticed a boy who was new to the school sitting alone at a lunch table. He always looked sad. I thought I would go and sit with him for a while. As I walked towards him, I noticed the lunch bag on the table. The name on the bag said “Katie”.

Now I understood and I talked to Katie. It seemed the new boy never brought a lunch, and he wouldn’t go to the lunch line for a free lunch (A student whose family is too poor qualifies for a free lunch). He had confided in Katie and asked her not to tell anyone that his parents wanted him to get free lunch at school. Katie asked me not to tell her parents. But I did. I drove to Katie’s house that evening after I was sure that she was in bed. I have never seen parents so proud of their child. Katie didn’t care that her parents and teacher were disappointed in her. But she cared about a little boy who was hungry and scared.

Katie still buys lunch every day at school. And every day, as she heads out the door, her mom hands her a delicious homemade lunch.

1. The author thought Katie was a girl who ________________________.

A. often made troubles at school

B. performed well at school

C. was disliked by most teachers

D. used to be a discipline problem

2.Why did Katie eat school lunch instead of her homemade lunch each day?

A. She had lost her homemade lunch.

B. Someone stole her homemade lunch.

C. She didn’t like the taste of her homemade lunch.

D. She gave her homemade lunch to a hungry boy

3. The underlined phrase “confided in” in Paragraph 5 has the closest meaning to ______.

A. trusted B. threatened

C. helped D. blamed

4.What can we learn from the text?

A. Katie told the author the truth of her lunch during their first talk.

B. Katie’s secret of lunch was discovered by the author by accident.

C. Katie was informed that her parents had known her secret.

D. Katie stopped buying lunch at school after her secret was discovered.

Dear Anne,

I like your column very much. I met a girl four years ago at a gym. She was the one who originally approached me and we became good friends. Then one day, she made me really angry, so angry that I just left and we never saw each other again.

Looking back, I really regret ending things that way. It was a cowardly act on my part, but I had a terrible temper at that time and let the smallest thing get to me. Recently, I’ve started thinking about her again and I looked up her e-mail address. I thought about writing to say “Hi” and apologize for what I did but I’m not sure. She could still be angry with me, or maybe she has forgotten me. I feel very lonely and I want to see her again. What should I do?

Tom

Dear Tom,

She may still be angry with you, and she may have forgotten the friendship between you, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t deserve an apology. Tom, how many of us have wished for the day that someone who treated us badly saw the light and finally owned up? But we rarely get that kind of expected result. So sure, e-mail her and say “Hi”.

Tell her you have been thinking about her and just want to apologize for getting angry and being a coward by walking out on her. But you should remember if she thinks you’re apologizing just because you are lonely, she might dismiss your sincerity. Therefore, don’t mention that. If she wants to see you again, she’ll make sure that happens.

Even if she doesn’t want to be your friend, I can assure you, she’ll appreciate the gesture. And it might make you think twice next time you get angry.

Anne

1.In the letter, Anne is probably ___________.

A. Tom’s friend B. Tom’s teacher

C. a woman reporter D. a columnist

2.What is troubling Tom?

A. He can’t get in touch with his former friend.

B. He regrets letting his former friend leave him.

C. He doesn’t know whether to apologize to his former friend.

D. He is uncertain whether his former friend can forgive him.

3.Which of the following is what Anne advises Tom to do?

A. Tell her that he expects to see her again.

B. Express his sincere apology to her.

C. Tell her that he is very lonely.

D. Beg her to give him another chance.

4.Anne wants to tell Tom that ________.

A. an apology is better late than never

B. he should think twice before he gets angry

C. it’s no use crying over spilt milk

D. he should answer for his wrong doings

When you go to the doctor, you like to come away with a prescription. It makes you feel better to know you will get some medicine. But the doctor knows that medicine is not always needed.Sometimes all a sick person needs is some reassurance that all will be well.In such cases the doctor may prescribe a placebo.

A placebo is a sugar pill,a harmless shot,or ail empty capsule.Even though they have no medicine in them , these things seem to make people well. The patient thinks it is medicine and begins to get better. How does this happen?

The study of the placebo opens up new knowledge about the way the human body can heal itself. It is as if there was a doctor in each of us.The doctor will heal the body for us if we let it.But it is not yet known just how the placebo works to heal the body. Some people say it works because the human mind fools itself. These people say that if the mind is fooled into thinking it got medicine, then it will act as if it did,and the body will feel better.

Placebos do not always work. The success of this treatment seems to rest a lot with the relationship between the patient and the doctor. If the patient has a lot of trust in the doctor and if the doctor really wants to help the patient, then the placebo is more likely to work.So in a way, the doctor is the most powerful placebo of all.

A placebo can also have bad effects. If patients expect a bad reaction to medicine, then they will also show a bad reaction to the placebo. This would seem to show that a lot of how you react to medicine is in your mind rather than in your body. Some doctors still think that if the placebo can have bad effects it should never be used. They think there is still not enough known about it

The strange power of the placebo does seem to suggest that the human mind is stronger than we think it is.There are people who say you can heal your body by using your mind. And the interesting thing is that even people who swear this is not possible have been healed by a placebo.

1.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to?

A.The placebo. B.The bad effect.

C.The body. D.The medicine.

2.What do we know about placebo according to the passage?

A.It contains some sort of medicine.

B.It won’t function if you are negative about medicine.

C.People who don’t believe placebo can’t be healed by it.

D.Patients and doctors know clearly how it helps to heal the body

3.Why is the doctor sometimes the most powerful placebo?

A.The patient needs help badly.

B.The patient believes in the doctor.

C.The doctor knows better about your body.

D.The doctor has carefully studied medicine.

4.What is the best title for the text?

A.Placebo:Work on Your Mind

B.Placebo:The Most Powerful Medicin

C.Placebo:The Best Doctor

D.Placebo:Heal Your Body
