Dear editor,

I’m sorry to occupy your precious time, and I really want to tell you anything about the problem of some people keeping too many pets nowadays. I take the problem more and more seriously for the following reason. First of all, as it is known to people, pets make loud noise that trouble residents a lot. What’s more, it is widely accepted that animal waste pollutes the environment, where makes people quite uncomfortable. Many owners like taking their pets to public place where they may frighten children or even bite people. The mostly important is that pets can spread some diseases and this has attracted much attention. Take all these factors into consideration, I sincerely hope that I can get help from you and expect the media do something for this.

Yours truly,

Wang Lin

【答案】1. I really 前的and→ but

2. anything→ something

3. reason→ reasons

4. 去掉as后的it

5. trouble→ troubles

6. where→ which

7. place→ places

8. mostly→ most

9. Take→ Taking

10. do→ to do

【解析】第一处:考察连词的应用。根据“I’m sorry to occupy your precious time, and I really want to tell you anything about the problem of some people keeping too many pets nowadays.”句意:很抱歉出现在你忙的时间,但是无真的有事要告诉你。故and改为but。

第二处:考察不定代词的应用。在否定句中一些事情用anything,在肯定中用something。可知此句为肯定句,则用something。故anything改为something。

第三处:考察名词复数的应用。根据“I take the problem more and more seriously for the following reason.”more and more后应跟名词的复数。故reason改为reasons。

第四处:考察固定搭配的应用。“First of all, as it is known to people, pets make loud noise that trouble residents a lot.”as is known to people大家都知道。故去掉as后的it。

第五处:考察名词复数的应用。“First of all, as it is known to people, pets make loud noise that trouble residents a lot.”a lot后跟名词的复数。故trouble改为troubles。

第六处:考察定语从句关系代词的应用。此句非限定性定语从句,先行词为事情,关系代词在后面的句子中作主语。应用which。故where改为which。

第七处:考察名词复数的应用。 Many owners like taking their pets to public place where they may frighten children or even bite people. 可知,此处应为名词的复数。故place改为places。

第八处:考察最高级的应用。根据意思此处应为形容词的最高级。important的最高级应在前面加most。故mostly改为most。

第九处:考察动名词的应用。此处为动词短语做状语,前面应该用take的名词形式taking。故Take改为Taking。

第十处:考察固定搭配的应用。expect to do sth希望做某事。故do改为to do。

【题目】A scientist believes he has discovered a direct link between people's favourite sleeping position and their personality. Professor Chris Idzikowski has described six different positions and what each one says about a person’s character. The professor, who did the research for a hotel group, said, “We are all aware of our body language when we are awake but this is the first time we have been able to see what our position says about us when we are asleep.” At the moment, Professor Idzikowski is trying to sleep in a yoga position that involves crossing your legs around your neck. He says there is no perfect position for sleeping.

1. THE STARFISH

“Starfish” sleep flat on their back with their arms raised. They are good listeners who make friends easily but do not like to be the centre of the attention.

2. THE YEARNER

“Yearners” sleep on their side with their arms raised. They are doubtful and have a very sensible approach to life.

3. THE FOETUS

The most popular position, particularly among women. They sleep curled(蜷缩)up on their side, holding on to the pillow. They appear to be tough but are actually sensitive and shy.

4. THE FREEFALLER

Only 6.5% of people prefer to sleep on their front, making this the least popular sleeping position. “Freefallers” seem very confident, although this hides a nervous personality.

5. THE LOG

The “log” position is similar to the “yearner” but with arms by the sides. “Logs” are easy-going and sociable, but can be seen as too gullible, easily to be tricked.

6. THE SOLDIER

“Soldiers”, who sleep on their back with their arms by their sides, are quiet and reserved. They set high standards for themselves and do not like noisy social situations.

1What can we infer from Paragraph 1?

A. The yoga sleeping position is the best one.

B. People don't know their body language when awake.

C. People's sleeping position determines their personality.

D. Professor Idzikowski shows great interest in sleeping positions.

2Which of the following sayings about the sleeping position is correct?

A. “Foetus” seem to be strong but sensitive.

B. “Yearners” sleep on their back with their arms raised.

C. “Starfish” like to be the focus of the attention.

D. “Soldiers” sleep on their side with their arms by their sides.

3What does the underlined word gullible mean in Paragraph 6?

A. Easily annoyed. B. Easily approached.

C. Easily cheated. D. Easily satisfied.

College is not just about studying, writing essays and burning the midnight oil in the library. Making friends and enjoying yourself is also necessary for the courses. Parties are social events for students to gather and chat with each other.

Drinking and music College parties in the US are always lacking in creativity and full of wine and music. The basic form rarely changes drink until you cannot anymore and play loud music at an earthshaking volume. There is plenty of beer involved, and some mixed cocktails.

Held in apartments The party is usually held in the apartment of a particular outgoing friend. Everyone will be invited, which means strangers will wander in and out of the apartment where you can get to know and make some new friends.

Ugly sweater party On holidays, parties frequently take on a proper theme. A popular theme around Christmas is the ugly sweater party. The goal is to wear the ugliest sweater you can find, creating an atmosphere of fun.

Whatever the occasion is, there will be no shortage of booze. If you are smart enough, you won't have so much as to lose your consciousness. Parties are always better when you can remember them the next day.

【题目】On May 23, 1989, Stefania Follini came out from a cave at Carlsbad, New Mexico. She hadn’t seen the sun for eighteen and a half weeks. Stefania was in a research program, and the scientists in the program were studying body rhythms. In this experiment Stefania had spent 130days in a cave, 30 feet in depth.

During her time in the cave, Stefania had been completely alone except for two white mice. Her living place had been very comfortable, but there had been nothing to tell her the time. She’d had no clocks or watches, no television or radio. There had been no natural light and the temperature had always been kept at 21℃.

The results were very interesting. Stefania had been in the cave for over four months, but she thought she had been there for only two. Her body clock had changed. She hadn’t kept to a 24-hour day, she had stayed awake for 20~25 hours and then had slept for 10 hours. She had eaten fewer meals and had lost 171bs in weight as a result! She had also become rather depressed.

How had she spent her time in the cave? As part of the experiment she’d done some physical and mental tests. She’d recorded her daily activities and the results of the tests on a computer. This computer had been specially programmed for the project. Whenever she was free, she’d played cards, read books and listened to music. She’d also learned French from tapes.

The experiment showed that our body clocks are affected by light and temperature. For example, the pattern of day and night makes us wake up and go to sleep. However, people are affected in different ways. Some people wake up naturally at 5:00 a.m., but others don’t start to wake up till 9:00 or 10:00 a.m. This affects the whole daily rhythm. As a result the early risers are at their best in the late morning. The late risers, on the other hand, are tired during the day and only come to life in the afternoon or evening!

1Stefania stayed in the cave for a long time because ________.

A. she was asked to do research on mice

B. she wanted to experience loneliness

C. she was the subject of a study

D. she needed to record her life

2What is a cause for the change of Stefania’s body clock?

A. Eating fewer meals. B. Having more hours of sheep.

C. Lacking physical exercise. D. Getting no natural light.

3This passage mainly tells about ________.

A. an experiment and its result B. a woman living in the cave

C. a depressed woman D. a woman and two mice

【题目】阅读理解。

Dear Mr. Wolfson,

The purpose of this letter is to inform you of one of our citizens who I believe should receive some special recognition for dedicated (敬业的) community service. The person I recommend is Elizabeth Samuelson. I believe you know her in your position as volunteer coordinator (协调员).

I have known Elizabeth for more than 20 years as both a friend and a neighbor. During that time I have seen her work tirelessly on scores of community projects and committees. As far as I know, she has never received any kind of recognition from the community for her work. I believe she should be given some sort of special recognition.

Just last year alone, she worked on at least six different community projects including the Park Renewal Project and the Heritage Homes FundRaising Banquet. In addition, she is a weekly driver for the MealsonWheels program and she visits patients in the care unit on a regular basis. Whenever a project or committee needs her, she will put herself into the work wholeheartedly. I'm sure that if you check with a few of your staff members who have been there over the years, they will confirm Elizabeth's community service record and probably be able to add many examples to the few I have given here. By the way, Elizabeth has no idea that I am writing this. She is a humble (谦虚的) person, and if she were aware of it, she would not allow me to send it.

I thought about writing such a letter about her a nmber of times in the past but just never took action. Then last week, I noticed in the paper that you sponsor (主办) an annual dinner at which dozens of awards are given out to people with much less community service than Elizabeth. In fact, I checked with her and she has never even been invited to that annual event!

I urge you to correct that omission (疏忽) now and take action to see that Elizabeth is properly recognized for her many years of silent but outstanding service to this community.

Sincerely,

Linda Sullivan

【1】Linda is Elizabeth's ________.

A.friend and colleague B.neighbor and leader

C.neighbor and worker D.friend and neighbor

2From the letter we know that Linda ________ Elizabeth much.

A.depends on B.looks down upon

C.ignores D.respects

3According to the letter, Elizabeth ________.

A.wants to be asked to take part in the annual event

B.contributes much to the community

C.has been invited to the annual dinner

D.has been given a lot of honors

4What can we learn about Mr.Wolfson from the letter?

A.He knows Linda quite well.

B.He is a careless person.

C.He tries something to reward those who have done much community service.

D.He tries his best to find Elizabeth and do something to reward her.
