    4．The unthinkable keeps happening．The 18th hot car death of the year was recorded Thursday---on the same day a national public service campaign started．It is meant to warn parents about the dangers of leaving kids in overheated cars．In the latest unfortunate accident，a 10-month-old girl died in Wichita，Kan，after being left by her parents in a car that was parked outside her house．The baby was forgotten，according to the police．
    One New Mexico teenager's creation called"Hot Seat"might someday prevent such deaths．Alyssa Chavez，a 17-year-old from Albuquerque，said she designed a warning system that might stop people from accidentally leaving their young children in the car after they get out of it．
    Chavez，whose mother owns a day-care center，said she had heard about the deaths of three children in hot cars in summer．"I felt that would be a good project for my eighth-grade science fair project---to find something to prevent those accidents from happening，"said Chavez．
    She bought a door alarm （警报器） and began to design her new warning system．Finally，she won the science fair．And for the last three years，she's been improving the design and creating a busness plan．
    The invention works in a simple but effective way．A parent places a sensor pad （感应垫） under the cover of a baby car seat．The pad has a sensor that communicates with a key fob （饰物） carried by the parent to find out how far the parent is from the car．If the parent is more than 40feet away from the car，the pad will check to see if it feels the child in the seat．If it doesn't，the alarms will not sound．If it does，then three alarms will go off---the key fob，the parent's phone and the car alarm itself．Chavez is now trying to raise money to build a model Hot Seat．

    13．3D films are fun一of course they are，even the bad ones．But these movies are still in their infancy．The question is whether 3D filmmakers can do better．
    I have no doubt they will，but I believe they will achieve cosmetic changes around the edges rather than revolutionary breakthroughs.3D filmmakers don't realize，or at least have not sufficiently taken to heart，that the medium they're working in is binocular （同时用双目的）film，not merely 3D film．And once one realizes this，it is possible to see that whole fields of potential film experience have been left entirely untapped．
    When we say 3D movies，we are referring to stereopisis （立体视觉）．But binocular vision refers to the use of two eyes for vision，whereas stereopsis is just one of the functions binocular vision gives us．
    Why do we have such a large binocular vision field in the first place？I have argued in my book，The Vision Revolution，that we have forward-facing eyes in order to see well in cluttered forest habitats．Our large binocular field evolved for seeing past layers of clutter（ 一堆杂乱的东西），and integrating two different views of a scene into a single combined view．I call this function of binocular vision"X-ray vision"because it allows us to see the clutter as semi-transparent，something through which to see the scene beyond．
    If 3D filmmakers are going to throw binocular images at our big binocular field，then they should be sending us views of the kind that field evolved to process：views within cluttered environments，whether leafy forests or spider-web-filled rooms．In this light，3D film ought to put the viewer into the bodies and eyes of characters in the story，placing him or her into the interactions between the characters and their surroundings．This would allow viewers to truly see out of the eyes of others，to experience other worlds，and yet not have the views of the scenes beyond blocked out，just as in real life．A simple first step forward is to begin calling them binocular movies，not 3D movies．

    What is that？If you're going through puberty（青春期），it could be your voice．Both boys and girls experience voice changes as they grow older，but girls'voices get only a little deeper．A boy's voice，on the other hand，may change quite a bit-from sounding like a little kid to sounding like somebody's dad!
    How does this happen？The larynx，your voice box，actually gets bigger during puberty．One of its jobs is to let you talk，sing，hum，yell，laugh，and make all sorts of noises．

    Before puberty，your larynx is pretty small and your vocal cords are kind of small and thin．That's why your voice is higher than an adult's．As you go through puberty，the larynx changes．As your body adjusts to this changing equipment，your voice may"crack"or"break"．But this process lasts only a few months．
    Not only do older guys and men sound different from boys，but you can also see the difference in their necks．When the larynx grows bigger，part of it sticks out inside the neck．You can see it at the front of the throat．This is known as the Adam's apple．For girls，the larynx also grows bigger but not as much as in boys，so you can't see it through a girl's skin．
    Everyone's timetable is different，so some kids'voices might start to change earlier and some might start a little later．Some voices might drop gradually，while others might drop quickly．
    If this hasn't happened to you yet，don't worry．And if you're going through this now，try not to stress too much about the funny noises you make．It can help to talk to a parent，or a friend who's already gone through the voice change．Before you know it，your voice will sound clear，strong，and more grown-up!
