One of my fondest memories as a child is going by the river and sitting idly on the bank. There I would enjoy the peace and quiet, watch the water rush downstream and listen to the singing of birds and the rustling of leaves in the trees. I would also watch the bamboo trees bend under pressure from the wind and watch them return gracefully to their original position after the wind had died down.

When I think about the bamboo trees’ ability to bounce back or return to its original position, the word “resilience” comes to my mind. When used in reference to a person, this word means the ability to readily recover from shock, depression or any other negative situation that stretches the limits of a person’s emotions.

Have you ever felt like you are about to lose control of your emotions? Have you ever felt like you are at your breaking point? Thankfully, you have survived the experience to live to talk about it.

During the experience you probably felt a mix of emotions that threatened your health. You felt emotionally tired, mentally exhausted and you most likely bored unpleasant physical symptoms.

Life is a mixture of good times and bad times, happy moments and unhappy moments. The next time you are experiencing one of those bad times or unhappy moments that take you close to your breaking point, bend, but don’t break. Try your best not to let the situation get the best of you.

A measure of hope will take you through the unpleasant moments. Will hope for a better tomorrow or a better situation, things may not be as bad as they seem to be. The unpleasant moment may be easier to deal with if the end result is worth having.

If the situation gets tough and you are at your breaking point, show resilience. Like the bamboo trees, bend, but don’t break!

【1What does the underlined word “resilience” mean in Paragraph 2?

A. The ability to overcome any difficulty.

B. The quality of hoping for a better tomorrow.

C. The quality of being brave at the breaking point.

D. The ability to recover easily and quickly from unpleasant or damaging events.

【2Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?

A. Life is like a bamboo tree that never breaks.

B. Whatever difficulties we may meet with in our life, we can bend, but can never break.

C. Life is a mixture of good times and bad times, happy moments and unhappy moments.

D. If you get over your breaking point, you can survive to live longer and more happily than others.

【3】According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

A. The author was an idle child when he was living near the river.

B. We should try our best not to let our bad times get the best of us.

C. Our being likely to lose control of our emotions is common in our life.

D. We should always believe things may not be as bad as they seem to be.

【4】Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?

A. Bend, but don’t break.

B. My wonderful childhood.

C. The bamboo trees.

D. Love the bamboo trees and your life.

If the situation gets tough and you are at your breaking point, show resilience. Like the bamboo trees, bend, but don’t break!

One of my fondest memories as a child is going by the river and sitting idly on the bank. Try your best not to let the situation get the best of you. Have you ever felt like you are about to lose control of your emotions?you have survived the experience to live to talk about it.可知C项正确;根据things may not be as bad as they seem to be.

When students and parents are asked to rate subjects according to their importance, the arts are unavoidably at the bottom of the list. Music is nice, people seem to say, but not important. Too often it is viewed as mere entertainment, but certainly not an education priority(优先). This view is shortsighted. In fact, music education is beneficial and important for all students.

Music tells us who we are. Because music is an expression of the beings who create it, it reflects their thinking and values and the social environment it came from. Rock music represents a lifestyle just as surely as does a Schubert song. The jazz influence that George Gershwin and other musicians introduced into their music is obviously American because it came from American musical traditions. Music expresses our character and values. It gives us identity as a society.

Music provides a kind of perception(感知)that cannot be acquired any other way. Science can explain how the sun rises and sets. The arts explore the emotive meaning of the same phenomenon. We need every possible way to discover and respond to our world for one simple but powerful reason: No one way can get it all.

The arts are forms of thoughts as powerful in what they communicate as mathematical and scientific symbols. They are ways we human beings talk to each other. They are the language of civilization through which we express our fears, our curiosities, our discoveries, our hopes. The arts are ways we give form to our ideas and imagination so that they can be shared with others. When we do not give children access to an important way of expressing themselves such as music, we take away from them the meanings that music expresses.

Science and technology do not tell us what it means to be human. The arts do. Music is an important way we express human suffering, celebration, the meaning and value of peace and love.

So music education is far more necessary than people seem to realize.

【1】According to Paragraph 1, students _______.

A. disagree with their parents on education

B. regard music as a way of entertainment

C. view music as an overlooked subject

D. prefer the arts to science

【2】In Paragraph 2, the author uses jazz as an example to _______.

A. compare it with rock music

B. introduce American musical traditions

C. show music identifies a society

D. prove music influences peoples lifestyles

【3】According to the passage, the arts and science _______.

A.approach the world from different angles

B. explore different phenomena of the world

C. express peoples feelings in different ways

D .explain what it means to be human differently

【4】What is the main idea of the passage?

A. Music is an effective communication tool.

B. Music should be of top education priority.

C. Music makes students more imaginative

D. Music education deserves more attention.

Of the many unpleasant emotions we can experience, fear may top the list. 【1】 . Fear can also keep us from pursuing the things in life that really matter --- like following our dreams, and developing important relationships. 2 .

Experience fear.

I used to be very afraid of speaking in front of people. I would get sweaty palms and my stomach would be so tied up that I wouldn't be able to eat. However, each time I spoke, I noticed afterwards that it wasn't that bad. Things I fear are never as bad in reality as I make them out in my mind. 【3 .

Create space.

The first and most important step to being fearless is to create some space between ourselves and the emotion of fear. This isn't accomplished by ignoring the fear, or trying to talk ourselves out of it. 4 . In fact, a recent research shows that by simply admitting the emotion we actually begin to reverse the "fight or flight (逃避)" response in the body.

Control the breath and feel the fear.

Once we acknowledge the presence of fear, the second step is to control the breathing so that it becomes slower and gentler. We try to make the breath just a little bit longer, and feel how fear manifests (展现) in the body. 5 .

With practice, we can create enough space between us and the emotion of fear so that we're able to replace a fearful thought with a positive one. We can imagine a positive outcome for whatever we're about to do. For instance, before I get up to speak in front of a group of people, I imagine that the audience is positively impressed by what I say and that I manage to complete the speech successfully.

A. As we pay attention to the physical symptoms of fear, we can see fear objectively.

B. Fear is more than just physically unpleasant.

C. Fear, if left uncontrolled, can even destroy our life.

D. So one way to get rid of fear is to simply push ourselves to do things that we fear.

E. When we can see a positive outcome in our mind, fear no longer holds us back.

F. I have some ideas, though, of how to be free from fear.

G. Space is created only when we can honestly acknowledge that fear exists.
