Wisdom teeth are normally the last teeth to appear. This usually happens when people are in their late teen years or early twenties,in other words, when they are older and wiser.

Wisdom teeth can grow into place normally and never cause a problem. But often there is not enough room for them in the mouth;they might crowd other teeth.Sometimes they even push sideways through the gums (齿龈).

An impacted wisdom tooth is one that fails to completely rise through the gums.Wisdom teeth that only partly break through can leave space for bacteria to enter around the teeth.Infection (感染) is a risk in these cases.

Wisdom teeth that are not well lined and become impacted are often removed. The American Dental Association says removal is generally advised when wisdom teeth only partly break through the gums.Removal is also advised if there is a chance that wisdom teeth ate poorly lined. The best time to remove is before the teeth cause any problems or pain.Young adults are the best candidates for wisdom teeth removal.

But why do we have wisdom teeth if we often need to get them removed? One theory has to do with our diets.Scientists say the diet of ancient humans probably required more chewing teeth.Life was probably a little rougher on the teeth back then, too. So it was good to have extras.

1.According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?

A.Just older and wiser people can have wisdom teeth.

B.Wisdom teeth can cause problems if not in their right place.

C.Impacted wisdom teeth can’t grow out of the gum fully.

D.Wisdom teeth that only partly break can get bacterial infections.

2.Wisdom teeth should be removed ________.

A.when they break through the gums

B.when they are below the gums

C.if they are not well lined or get impacted

D.if they take up enough room in the mouth

3.We can learn from the passage that________.

A.impacted wisdom teeth have the risk of getting infected

B.ancient humans need chewing teeth because of their happy life

C.older adults are the best candidates for wisdom teeth removal

D.more chewing teeth are needed for the diet of modern humans

4.The main purpose of the passage is to________.

A.advise B.persuade

C.comment D.introduce

Cotton farmers in some Indian villages are busily buying Coca Cola and Pepsi, believing that the sugar in the fizzy (有泡沫的) drinks kills pests.

Farmers say scientists advised them to mix pesticides with a sugary juice to control pests, and they found the mixture cheaper and more effective than pure chemicals — although soft drink makers and scientists dismissed the remarks. N. Hamunayya, who has become a famous person in his village in the southeastern state of Andhra Pradesh, said his crop survived an attack of pests which had resisted other pesticides. “We found that all the colas had uniform effect on pests. The pests became dead and fell to the ground,” he said. He said the drinks had all the elements they needed: they were cheaper, sticky, fizzy, and attracted ants, which ate the young of the pests. But Thinupathi Reddy, assistant director of the Regional Agri Research Station, Guntur, says tests had proved such results wrong. “We conducted some field trials on cotton crop at our research station. There was no obvious productivity or destruction of pests,” he says.

Statements from Pepsi and Coca Cola said there was “no scientific basis” for this_practice. But their dealers are enjoying increasing sales. Mantan Wall, who sells soft drinks in 17 villages in the region, said sales rose up, thanks to the farmers. “For the 10 days between August and September I had successful business. Instead of just 30 cases (each containing a dozen one litre bottles) of cola, I started selling almost 200 cases,” he said. “We expected the sales to drop after the news over pesticide residues (残留) in the cola drinks. Now I have to keep extra supply for the cotton farmers,” he said.

In February, an Indian environment group made a report saying drinks made by Coca Cola and Pepsi contained pesticides and called for tougher safety standards. The US firms strongly rejected the findings of the New Delhi?based Centre for Science and Environment and said their products were safe.

1.Some Indian farmers think the drinks can kill pests because ________.

A.there is some pesticide left in them

B.they are sticky and fizzy

C.they have elements that kill pests

D.they made the pesticide more effective

2.The underlined part “this practice” in Para. 3 probably refers to “________”.

A.testing the mixture

B.selling more drinks in India

C.mixing the drinks with the pesticide

D.attracting ants to eat the young pests

3.The drink makers would not accept the fact that their drinks could kill pests because they ________.

A.thought it went against science

B.believed that the farmers didn't tell the truth

C.might fear that it could bring harm to their business

D.insisted that no poison was left in their products

4.The writer's purpose of writing this passage is to ________.

A.tell an interesting incident

B.warn people that some drinks might be dangerous to health

C.suggest using Coca Cola to kill pests

D.announce a new discovery of Coca Cola

Public bookshelves are appearing across Germany on street corners, city squares and in suburban supermarkets. In these free?for?all libraries, people can grab whatever they want to read, and leave behind anything they want for others. There’s no need to register,no due date, and you can take or give as many as you want.“This project is aimed at everyone who likes to read.It is open for everybody,” Michael Aubermann, one of the organizers of the free book exchange said.

The western city’s latest public shelf was put up next to Bayenturm. It is the fourth free shelf that Aubermann’s group, the Cologne Citizen’s Foundation, has placed outside.“We set up our other outdoor shelves last year and it’s been working really well,” said Aubermann. The public bookshelves, which are usually financed by donations and cared for by local volunteer groups, have appeared independently of each other in many cities, suburbs and villages. Each shelf holds around 200 books and it takes about six weeks for a complete turnover, with all the old titles replaced by new ones.

Even commercial book stores and online book sellers seem to support the idea of free book exchanges.“We see this project rather as a sales promotion than as competition,” said Elmar Muether.“If books are present everywhere,it helps our business, too.”

So far,the Cologne book group has had few problems with damage or other problems.Aubermann said,“Propaganda (宣传) is the only kind of literature we do not allow here.”

At another bookshelf in the Bayenthal neighborhood, the lower shelves are reserved for children’s literature only.“It is important that we make it easy for everyone to participate in this ‘reading culture on the street’—from old readers to kids to immigrants,” Aubermann said.

While most of the shelves have so far been put up in upscale_neighborhoods,Aubermann and the 20 volunteers who help look after the project are planning to put up future shelves in poor neighborhoods, where citizens often don’t have as much access to literature.

1.Which of the following is TRUE about the public bookshelves?

A.People can take the books and leave their books at will.

B.People can’t borrow books unless they donate books.

C.People can borrow whatever they like after registering.

D.People have to return the books according to the required time.

2.According to Aubermann,the public bookshelves________.

A.are financed by local volunteers

B.have been going well since their birth

C.were managed by the local government

D.will hold more books and take a shorter turnover

3.The underlined phrase “upscale neighborhoods” refers to________.

A.communities that have many people

B.communities that have many tall buildings

C.communities that are free to live in

D.communities that are of high grade
