Blowing bubbles is fun! The best thing about bubbles is that it's easy to make your own bubble solution(溶液). You can make as much as you want and blow as many bubbles as you'd like. Do you know the secret of making bigger and stronger bubbles? Do just as follows:

Measure 6 cups of water into one container, then pour 1 cup of dish soap into the water and slowly stir (搅拌) it until the soap is mixed in. Try not to let bubbles form while you stir.

Measure 1/4 cup of corn syrup and add it to the container. Stir the solution until it is mixed together.

You can use the solution right away, but to make even better bubbles, put the cap on the container and let your super bubble solution sit overnight. The soap mixture on the outside of a bubble is actually made of three very thin layers: soap, water, and another layer of soap. A bubble forms when the water between the layers of soap turns into gas. The corn syrup mixes with the soap to make it thicker. The thicker skin of the bubbles keeps the water from evaporating(蒸发) quickly, so they last longer. It also makes them stronger, so you can blow bigger bubbles.

Dip a bubble wand or straw into the mixture, slowly pull it out, wait a few seconds, and then blow. If you don't have a ready made "bubble wand", you can make your own bubble wand by cutting off the end of the bulb of a plastic pipet (移液管). Dip the cut end in the solution and blow through the narrow end. You can also make a circle out of thin wire or pipe cleaner. Just twist a round end on your wire to blow the bubbles through. You can even make it heart shaped, square or use other shapes if you're clever enough to bend it well.

1The text is written to _________ .

A. argue B. advertise C. entertain D. instruct

2The secret of making bigger and stronger bubbles lies in_________ .

A. soap B. corn syrup C. water D. straw

3The bubble wand is used to_________ .

A. blow bubbles B. mix the solution C. measure soap D. shape wires

4What can we infer from Paragraph 4?

A. More soap, more bubbles.

B. Less water, better bubbles.

C. Thicker layers, more bubbles.

D. Stronger skin, bigger bubbles.

Do you know the secret of making bigger and stronger bubbles?

The corn syrup mixes with the soap to make it thicker. The thicker skin of the bubbles keeps the water from evaporating(蒸发) quickly, so they last longer. It also makes them stronger, so you can blow bigger bubbles.

Dip a bubble wand or straw into the mixture, slowly pull it out, wait a few seconds, and then blow.”

根据第四段中的“The thicker skin of the bubbles keeps the water from evaporating(蒸发) quickly, so they last longer. It also makes them stronger, so you can blow bigger bubbles.”

Today we talk about a word that is a feeling as well as a place. This word is “home.” Long ago in the 1700s, “home” was used as a verb, 1 (mean) “to be guided to a destination.” So, when you home in on something, you get 2 (close) to your target. For example, you could say, “Police are homing in on the suspects.” That is also where we get homing pigeons-pigeons that can find 3 (they) way home after being released.

But today, “home” is more often used as a noun. And it has a very emotional 4 (connect) for American English speakers. You can remember the meaning of the word by the expression “home is 5 the heart is.” That expression means home is anywhere you feel love and comfort. It is a place where you belong, and often a place you consider your origin. In other 6 (word), “home” is not 7 (simple) a building where you live—that’s a house. There is a big difference 8 a home and a house.

The writer, Thomas Wolfe, had 9 different idea about home. In 1940, his book “You Can’t Go Home Again” 10 (publish). Today we use this title to mean that the ideas and feelings that you had as a child often change when you are an adult. So, even if you return to the place where you grew up, time and distance have changed your perspective (观点).

Walk Out of the Comfort Zone and Try New Things
For most high school students, free periods are useless. From what I have seen, few do homework, instead many are on their phones and talking, making it impossible for those who actually want to do work to complete any. As a senior next year, I think extra periods should be used to take optional subjects.
Our school offers many classes. Now is the time to experiment in different fields of study. We will never know if we are interested or talented in a subject if we don't try it.
In my 8th grade, I was told that I had to take an art class as a graduation requirement; so in the 9th grade I took Studio and Art. One of the projects was to build a clay pot, but I built mine incorrectly, so it broke in the kiln (窑). I found out that I have no artistic ability at all, and now I know for sure that I do not want to be an artist. However, the class was one of my favorites that year. I was able to try new activities and test my ability.
Walk out of our comfort zone and try new things! College is when we should focus on a specific major, but high school is when we have to figure it out.
Half of all college students change their major at some point. By doing that hundreds of dollars are wasted on classes that they would have never needed to take. So use our extra periods to find out what we want to do in college. The classes we choose can impact us in future. Taking optional subjects will enrich our mind. It will also show colleges we are diverse students.
(1)How should we use our extra periods in the author's opinion?

(2)Why does the author think we should experiment in different fields of study?

(3)Why did the clay pot show the author's lack of artistic ability?

(4)According to the author, how will taking optional subjects impact up in the future?

It's generally believed that people act the way they do because of their personalities and attitudes. They recycle their garbage because they care about the environment. They pay $5 for a caramel brulee latte because they like expensive coffee drinks.
It's undeniable that behavior comes from our inner dispositions(性情), but in many instances we also draw inferences about who we are, as suggested by the social psychologist Daryl Bern, by observing our own behavior. We can be strangers to ourselves. If we knew our own minds, why should we need to guess what our preferences are from our behavior? If our minds were an open book, we would know exactly how much we care about the environment or like lattes. Actually, we often need to look to our behavior to figure out who we are.
Moreover, we don't just use our behavior to learn about our particular types of character --- we infer characters that weren't there before. Our behavior is often shaped by little pressures around us, which we fail to recognize. Maybe we recycle because our wives and neighbors would disapprove if we didn't. Maybe we buy lattes in order to impress the people around us. We should not mistakenly believe that we always behave as a result of some inner disposition.
Whatever pressures there can be or inferences one can make, people become what they do, though it may not be in compliance(符合)with their true desires. Therefore, we should all bear in mind Kurt Vonnegut's advice: “We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.”
(1)According to the passage, personalities and attitudes are commonly believed to _______.
A.determine one's behavior
B.reflect one's taste
C.influence one's surroundings
D.result from one's habits
(2)Which of the following would Daryl Bern most probably agree with?
A.The return of a wallet can indicate one's honesty.
B.A kind person will offer his seat to the old.
C.One recycles plastics to protect the environment.
D.One buys latte out of love of coffee.
(3)What can be inferred from the underlined sentence in the passage?
A.We fail to realize our inner dispositions.
B.We can be influenced by outside pressures.
C.Our behavior is the result of our true desires.
D.Our characters can shape our social relationships.
(4)What does the author mainly discusses in the passage?
A.Personalities and attitudes.
B.Preferences and habits.
C.Behavior and personalities.
D.Attitudes and preferences.
