阅读下面短文,根据第1至第5小题的具体要求,简要回答问题。

A hundred years ago, the only signs of elephants at Kruger National Park in north-eastern South Africa, which had just opened, were a few tracks in a dry river bed.Game hunters of the 19th century had hunted the creatures almost to extinction(绝种).Conservation efforts were so successful that, in 1967, the authorities decided they had to start culling(剔选)elephants -shooting them from helicopters and hauling their dead bodies away in trucks-to keep their populations between 6,000 and 8,000, considered to be the park's“carrying capacity(容量).”Few people questioned the policy, which was dropped in 1995.Since then, the elephant population has soared to 14,000.Conservationists now fear that it might destroy vegetation, threatening many life forms with extinction.

A new proposal to select the creatures has created a dilemma for the national parks authority, South African National Parks. As a responsible department, it has urged that “decisive action is required”to safe guard the survival of the rich and various life forms in South African wildlife reserves. The culling of elephants, it argues, is needed as a necessary measure to prevent local creatures' extinctions in the future.“A decision of culling elephants,”the park manager said back in 2005,“should not be delayed beyond March 2006.”What has held up this action is fierce disagreement over whether culling the elephants is a morally responsible choice-a debate that didn't exist in 1967.

What's changed? Scientists have told us in recent years that elephants and other higher mammals-such as chimpanzees, gorillas, dolphins, whales and dogs-have aspects of feelings and intelligence that until recently most people thought was the province of humans alone.Geneticists have shown that 98 per cent of the human genetic code is identical to that of chimpanzees.Psychologists and neuroscientists assert that higher mammals experience emotions.Linguistic researchers have proved that many mammals have languages with a diversity of sounds and symbols. The debate over what to do about Kruger's elephants-like similar debates over the ethics of animal testing and the treatment of animals raised for food-is challenging us to reflect on how we treat other living beings.

The habitat of koala bears spans (横越) over eastern regions of Australia that include states like Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria and also in the state of South Australia.

Koalas are found where are enough forests of eucalyptus(桉树) trees. The association of koalas and eucalyptus trees is due to the fact that these animals feed on the leaves of eucalyptus trees. But that’s not all. In addition, the trees also serve as the homes of the koalas.

第二节 回答问题(共3小题;每小题2分,满分6分)阅读下面短文,根据第58至第60小题的具体要求,简要回答问题。

If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they become weak; when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory works in the same way.

When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong.

If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame(责备), and few of us know that it is just his own fault.

Have you ever found that some people can't read or write but they have better memories? This is because they cannot read or write and they have to remember things; they cannot write them down in a little notebook. They have to remember days, names, songs and stories; so their memory is the whole time being exercised.

So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people: practise remembering.

阅读下面短文,根据第58至第60小题的具体要求,简要回答问题,并将答案转写到答题卡上。

In choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A good friend can help you study. But how do I know when I have found a good friend? I look for certain qualities(品质) of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability(可靠).

Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He puts himself in the other person’s place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener.

At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults(过错) in others. He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.

Sometimes you will meet “fair weather friends”. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. So, I think another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on(信赖) a good friend. If I need a favor, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.

There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun. A good friend likes the same things I like. He likes to laugh with me. That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.

When I meet someone who is reliable, honest, and understanding, I know I’ve found a friend!

Do you have a goal for life? What's it? Do you want to become a writer, singer or just become a rich person?

A recent survey shows that in modern society, most people pick up practical goals, such as “earning money to buy a house and a car”, “to improve one's life quality”, “finding a good job”.

Wang You worked in a small firm (商行) in Nanjing. The job was good and he didn't have to work for extra hours. However, he felt the work was not exciting at all and the life was boring. So he gave up his job and went to Beijing in February, 2007. When he arrived in Beijing, he set his new goal as finding a good job.

Nowadays more and more people want to live a better life. This fact shows that the society is making progress and people's life goals have become more practical. One researcher says, “Everybody has his/her own life goal, which will be surely different from people to people. If one is poor, one's life goal will be to earn more money; if one doesn't have a diploma, studying hard to get a diploma will become his life goal; and if one doesn't have love, his life goal will be to look for it. But if one has no life goal, he will idle away (虚度) his lifetime. {007}”
