One Canada, Two Languages

Canada is one of the few nations in the world to have two official languages: English and French. There are 10 provinces in the country but only one of these-Quebec is known as “French Canada”.This is because it was founded by French explorers while British adventurers discovered the rest.?

Canada left the British empire(帝国)in 1867 to become an independent country, and English and French have been recognized as the official languages ever since.?

Most people speak English as their first language and the two national television networks broadcast in English throughout the country.Apart from in Quebec and a few places on the east coast, French television is very rare.?

The same goes for traffic signs and menus. For example, outside of Quebec, there are only a few places where you'll see traffic signs in French. In restaurants, it's almost impossible to find French on the menu unless you are in the heartland(中心地带)of French Canada. However, all products sold in Canada must, by law, have labels(标签)and instructions in both languages.?

In Canada's English speaking provinces, official bilingualism(双语)means that students can choose to complete a special French language course.Under this programme, they are taught most of their subjects in French.?

If a student begins the course in kindergarten(幼儿园)or Grade One, it is likely that all their lessons will be in French. However, if they start at junior high school, 25 per cent of the teaching will continue to be in English.?

One blue sky above us,

One ocean lapping at our shore,

One earth so great and round,

Who could ask for anything more?

Pete Seeger

In fact, nobody has the right to ask for anything more.If we humans fail to keep a balance between our needs and the needs of the natural world, our great round Earth will no longer be fit to live on.

There are many reasons for keeping this balance.

For one, if we continue to over-fish the seas, certain species will disappear. The kinds of fish that we humans catch feed on smaller ones, and if all these killers disappear, the smaller fish will overwhelm(泛滥)the sea.Edible(可食的)fish-as well as many fishermen's livelihoods-will disappear.

And if we continue to clear land, cutting down trees, the animals, which use trees as a food source and for shelter, will suffer from a disturbance. Many of them will eventually die out.

Since we love the beauty and grace of deer and moose running in our woods, protection against over-hunting is also a must.If hunters break our laws and kill animals when it is not time, then these species won't be there any more-for beauty or hunting.

Finally, if man keeps polluting and littering the waters-fresh and salt-nonbiodegradable substances(非降解物质)will build up and make the water unfit to support underwater lives.Again, many people who make their living from the sea will no longer be able to.

We need this balance to keep the beauty of our world for ourselves and for our children and grandchildren. For if that beauty disappears, everything man can hope to achieve will be lost forever.

One in five US teenagers have some degree of hearing loss,  according to researchers who said the
problem is growing."Teenagers really underestimate how much noise they are exposed to" Dr Josef
Shargorodsky said.____
The study,  published in the Journal of the American Medical Association,  compared national surveys between the early 1990s and the mid2000s.In the first survey,  about 15 percent of teenagers had some
degree of hearing loss.____Most of the hearing loss was in one ear only. While it was usually slight,
one in 20 adolescents had more pronounced (显著的) problems-up 50 percent since the first survey.
Hearing loss is very common in the elderly,  Grimes said,  but she added that it was concerning to see
it come into the younger age groups. In babies and young children,  hearing problems are known to delay
language development,  which in turn influences performance in other areas.Slight hearing loss,  for instance,  makes it difficult to distinguish between highfrequency consonants like "s" and "f"
____The science is less clear for adolescents,  but it is easy to imagine how being hard of hearing could
influence learning,  said Grimes."We know from a lot of data that noisy classrooms are one of the biggest
challenges to learning."
The reasons for the rise are still uncertain. When asked about noise exposure-on the job,  from
firearms or recreational activities,  for instance-the teenagers didn't indicate any change. But Shargorodsky said,  "We knew from before that it is difficult to ask this age group about noise exposure-they
underestimate it."____Although it's not clear that these devices are to blame,  Grimes said it was still a
good idea to turn down the volume. But she pointed out the advice would likely fall on deaf ears. She said
the American Academy of Hearing had also contacted Steve Jobs,  the CEO of Apple,  about adding a
volume limiter on iPods,  but never heard back.

1. In which place should the sentence "Few people would call it noise when they listen to music on their
MP3 players,  for instance." be put?

A. ①

B. The sounds like "s" and "f" are hard to distinguish by babies.
C. The number of teenagers with hearing problems is decreasing.
D. Babies and teenagers are also facing problems of hearing loss.

3. Which of the following is TRUE?

A. The reasons of the hearing loss are known to the researchers.
B. The surveys have been carried out for at most 15 years.
C. The reasons for the rise are clear to the researchers.
D. The results of the surveys have been published in a newspaper.

4. The American Academy of Hearing contacted the CEO of Apple in order to________.

A. share the surveys with the CEO of Apple

One of the strongest arguments for the raising of the school leaving age(ROSLA)has been that it will
bring us some way nearer to"equality of opportunity".
Many people like to think of our present system of schooling as providing plenty of steps up the
ladder of success for clever children. It would be good to think that no one who is really bright can be
missed out when the state system is obviously so complete. It is obvious, for instance, that many children
from less wealthy homes reach university or do well in other ways.
Unfortunately we now have plenty of proofs that many children of every level of ability do much less
well than they could. For instance, during the years of national military service it was possible to test the
intelligence(智力)of all male 18 - to - 20 - year - olds. Half of those soldiers who were placed in the two
highest ability groups had left school at 15.
It has also been shown that the percentage of working class children going to university is almost the
same now as it was in 1939. One study of 5,000 children from birth to 21 years old shows that up to half
the bright pupils from working class homes left school when they reached 16 years old. Moreover, there is no difference in intelligence between the sexes, but far more boys than girls stay in education after 16.
It is clear from this and many other proofs that many children are still leaving school too early to benefit from the prizes-money, social respectability, and interesting jobs-which higher education gives. It is clear
too that the reasons why such children leave have much to do with their social background. Their parents
often need the extra money another money-earner would bring in; they don't value education for itself
because their own was probably dull and unhappy. It is not so much that they force their sons and
daughters to leave school, rather that they tend to say, "it's up to you".
1. It is hoped that ROSLA will give all children         .
A. a more enjoyable time at school
B. the same chances in society
C. the right to a better school
D. higher scores in intelligence tests
2. People would like to think that        .
A. equal numbers of poor and wealthy children reach university
B. those with the least money get the best education
C. intelligent children are always selected by the system
D. only really clever children do well
3. Working class children are thought to be at a disadvantage because       .
A. many of the clever ones leave school early
B. fewer go to university than ever before
C. more than half leave school when they are 16
D. fewer boys than girls stay at school after 16
4. Many children leave school early because        .
A. their social background makes them unhappy
B. they have to give something to their family's income
C. their school is a dull and unhappy place
D. their parents don't allow them to make their own decisions
5. This article shows that equal opportunity in education        .
A. is a thing of the past
B. has not yet been achieved
C. is there for those who deserve(值得拥有)it
D. has greatly improved our society

One of my longestrunning battles (战役)with my kids is about manners specifically about whether it's
necessary to send handwritten thankyou notes for gifts.I told my children it was a must so they have
continued throughout their teens to write the notes, but they always grumble (发牢骚)that I'm out of step
with the times.
If a BabyCenter's survey is a guide,I'm not alone.A surprisingly large number of parents still insist
(坚持)that their children practice some oldfashioned manners such as putting pen to paper to say thank
you,and treating adults with respect.
Among the reasons, the one provided most often by parents, according to BabyCenter's report,is that
they see so many badly behaved kids around them that they're determined to raise their children differently, and meanwhile, many parents agree that"the world is a more  freewheeling place, and they want to give their kids a stronger moral compass (道德的罗盘)to guide them".
This creates a particular challenge for parents for the reason that they have to find a sitter, nanny or
other childcare providers who will insist on the manners they consider most important but the fact is that it
is very difficult to find the right person.
Perri Klass wrote recently in the New York Times about her annoyance at a rude, demanding boy
Perri Klass wrote,"I do pass judgment"on kids with bad manners "and so do other pediatricians
(儿科医生)who do the same work as me" since rude kids make them wonder whether the kids' families
are moral. The whole "manners"concept (观念)might seem a bit oldfashioned, she says, until you accept it as a hotbutton childdevelopment social skills.

3.What made the parents pay attention to their children's manners?

A.The latest fashion.
B.The author's suggestion.
C.BabyCenter's new survey.

A.Because they can't stay with their children all the time.
B.Because their children dislike the oldfashioned manners.
