Flight cancellations(取消) and loss of luggage can ruin even the best-planned holiday. The key to a stress-free trip is having a backup plan.
Fly non-stop. The worst problems involve connections, so it is important to take non-stop flights whenever possible. If you do have to make a connection, try to route through a southern city, where snowstorms and de-icing delays will be less likely. Always allow at least two to three hours for flight connections.
Check the weather. Check the weather in your connecting city, not just the arrival and departure city. If your departure flight is cancelled because of weather, you can go home or back to your hotel. Airlines promise to get you on the next available flight, not the next flight. That could be several days later on a sold-out holiday weekend.
Go early. The earlier in the day you fly, the better your chance of getting rebooked the same day after a missed connection. It will also put you ahead of stranded(滞留的) passengers who arrive later.
Rebook immediately. As soon as your flight is delayed or cancelled, get on the phone and rebook your flight instead of waiting at the ticket counter. If your rebooking is delayed, call or ask your travel agent to find a seat on another carrier, and then ask your original carrier to endorse your ticket to the new airline. Airlines are not required to do this but often do. Learn more at www. dot. gov/ airconsumer/ fly-rights.
Ship bags. A few days before your flight, ship suitcases or holiday gifts to your destination by a documented express service. It’s preferable to losing bags because of re-routed flights and sometimes cheaper than paying airline overweight bag fees.
Know your rights. Airlines are not required to compensate passengers for delayed or cancelled flights, but it never hurts to ask for goodwill vouchers(折扣) for meals, taxis or a room.
1.When making a flight connection, it’s common that you’ll___________.
A. stop in the south B. choose a good city without snowstorm

2.The suggested way for you to rebook your flight is___________.
A. through the phone B. by waiting at the ticket counter

3.The underlined word “compensate” in the last paragraph can be replaced by “___________”.
A. pay B. ask C. host D. treat
4.What’s the best title of the passage?
A. The Worst Problem in the Trip.
B. The Preparation Before the Flight Trip.
C. How to Book the Plane Ticket.
D. How to Plan the Holiday.

In a study published in the U. S. journal Science, researchers from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences(CAAS) and the University of Florida identified the chemical combinations and genetic recipe for better tomato flavor(味道).
“In recent years, consumers often complain that the modern tomato is less flavorful than it once was” said co-principal researcher Sanwen Huang. “Our results provide a practical road map for breeding tomato varieties with better flavor.”
For the study, a 170-person consumer group was created to evaluate 160 tomatoes representing 101 varieties, based on qualities such as “overall liking” and “flavor degree”. The results pointed to dozens of chemical compounds of interest, and further research using a statistical model discovered 33 flavor compounds connected with consumer liking, such as glucose(葡萄糖). The reason why modern tomatoes don’t taste good anymore is that a total of 13 of these flavor-associated compounds “were significantly reduced in modern varieties,” their paper wrote. Moreover, the researchers found that smaller fruit tended to have greater sugar content, suggesting that “selection for more sizable tomatoes has cost sweetness and flavor”.
Based on this knowledge, Huang and Professor Harry Klee of the University of Florida studied the whole genomes of 398 varieties of tomato, identifying about 250 positions of genes on a chromosome(染色体), which controlled tomato flavor.
“We’re just fixing what has been damaged over the last half century to push them back to where they were a century ago,” said Klee in a statement. “We can make the supermarket tomato taste noticeably better.” Klee said new tomato varieties with better flavor could be ready in three to four years. In addition, “the genes and pathways identified here in the tomato almost certainly point to pathways worth researching for improvement of flavor quality in other fruit crops,” they wrote.
1.According to the text, the study ________.
A. was carried out just through a survey
B. was conducted by Chinese researchers themselves
C. was completely focused on the genes of different tomatoes
D. was done with the background of declining flavor of tomatoes
2.The researchers have found that ________ in the study.
A. bigger tomatoes are much sweeter
B. some genetic positions affect the taste of tomatoes
C. some chemical compounds make tomatoes less tasty
D. a total of 13 flavor-associated compounds make tomatoes appealing in taste
3.What is the influence of the study according to the text?
A. The study lays the foundation for further researches to improve other fruit crops’ flavor.
B. The study makes it possible for us to have noticeably more tasty tomatoes next year.
C. The study provides a road for where to plant tomatoes with better flavor.
D. The study has fixed all the genes of existing tomatoes.

Why do some parents tend to hold back their disabled children from experiencing life? Even when they are grown, the parents will not allow certain things to happen. It's true that they do have a certain amount of responsibility in protecting their severely disabled adult child, but at what point do they become overly protective?
Parents want to create a safe haven, a place where they know that nothing bad will happen to their beloved child. This seems to be a respectable and notable act in caring for a person with a disability, but it can have a side effect. When protecting their child from suspected hardships, not wanting anything bad to happen to them, they very well may be preventing good things from happening to them.
In life we all make mistakes, it is how we are able to grow and strengthen our character. Parents may feel that in certain instances their child will get hurt or mistreated in some way, so they build walls in their own minds convincing themselves of the need to shelter. However, the disabled, yes even the “severely disabled” deserve to make personal mistakes as well. Even more, they have the right to succeed.
Parents should do everything and anything within their power to see their disabled children lead a somewhat “normal” life. Parents should help their children, not hold them down. This could make them think they are unworthy and that their parents do not believe in them.
Whatever it may be, let them at least try. If they want to attend college, so be it. Parents should find out all they can, and be involved in every detail. Get to know the aides, experience it with them. If they want to dare and someday marry, so be it. Don't shut them out and form bad or critical opinions about them just because you are afraid. Unite as a family and make it work.
1.What side effect will it have when the parents overprotect their disabled children?
A. Their children will never grow up in the future.
B. Their children will find no shelter when they grow up.
C. Their children will become less confident when facing troubles.
D. Their children will less likely meet with good things.
2.What attitude does the author hold towards the parents who overprotect their disabled children?
A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Critical. D. Uninterested.
3.The suggestions in the last paragraph imply that ________.
A. parents should be a bridge, not a brick wall
B. parents should act as their children’s best friends
C. parents should encourage their children to get married
D. parents should live in harmony with their disabled children
4.What is the best title of this passage?
A. Living Within Parents’ Power
B. Letting Your Disabled Child Succeed
C. Getting out of a Brick Wall in Their Life
D. Helping Your Disabled Child out of Trouble

Which is much more significant to you when you are finding a job? Working experience or an advanced-degree? Well, I believe diverse people have different answers. 1. Here are following reasons:
Above of all, most of jobs don’t require such a high degree, which means just some few works, such as, theoretical physics, archaeology, or literature, need high academic qualification. 2. For example, when you are offering a department manager post, there is a man who has already been a manager for three years but only have a master’s degree and a no-experienced person with doctor’s degree, which one would you choose? Definitely the first one for the manager don’t acquire a doctor’s degree but rich working experience.
3. For instance, Bill Gates, who was the richest man in the world and also one of the most successful merchant. What a wise choice when he decided to abandon studying so that he can gain more working experience instead of a doctor’s degree. Or Steve Paul Jobs, who discontinue his study at his age of nineteen in order to become a personnel of a computer company just like Bill Gates. 4.
5. Maybe you shouldn’t have to gain an advanced or highest degree, but that doesn’t mean nothing. Probably a bachelor’s degree is still necessary in this fierce-competition society.
All in all, I think rich working experience is much more important than the advanced-degree.
A. However, a degree is still required for most people.
B. Meanwhile, rich working experience will draw more attention.
C. Secondly, plenty of experience will bring you success much earlier.
D. In my view, either working experience or advanced-degree counts.
E. As for me, I will say working experience without hesitation.
F. As a matter of fact, more people with rich working experience become successful.
G. From all of these, we can see that advanced-degree isn’t so necessary as working experience.
