D.the radio programs many start a bit early or late.

分析 本文描述了美国人和南美人对时间的不同态度.

解答 24.C 细节理解题.由第三行people there think that it is important to know the time.
由第七行he would not care for arriving on time可知他们认为准时是不重要的.故选A.
27.D 细节理解题.第八行even the radio programs may not begin right on time,可知他们的广播节目播出不准时.故选D.

12.Some of us were born clever and some stupid.Intelligence is developed by our environment and our experience.Why?To some extent our intelligence is given to us at birth,and no amount of education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence.On the other hand,a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings.Thus the limits of person's intelligence are fixed at birth,whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment.This view,now held by most experts,can be supported in a number of ways.
It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with.The closer the blood relationship between two people,the closer they are likely to be in intelligence.Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from population,it is likely that their degree of intelligence will be completely different.If,on the other hand,we take two identical twins,it will be very likely that they are as intelligent as each other.Relations like brothers and sisters,parents and children,usually have similar intelligence,and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.
Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments.We might send one,for example,to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring.We would soon find differences in intelligence developing,and this indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part.This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other,but who are not related at all are likely to have similar degree of intelligence.
29.Which of these sentences best describes the writer's point in Paragraph 1?C
A.To some extent,intelligence is given at birth.
B.Intelligence is developed by the environment.
C.Intelligence is influenced both by birth and the environment.
D.Some people are born clever and others born stupid.
30.The underlined phrase"at random"meansA.
A.aimlessly
B.frequently
C.purposely
D.independently
31.The best title for this article would beB.
A.What Does Intelligence Mean?
B.On Intelligence
C.We Are Born with Intelligence
D.Environment Plays a Part in Developing Intelligence.

When you think of documentaries,you may think of them as long,boring programs.But documentaries can be wonderful and bring stories from the real world into our homes.With fascinating footage(影片片段) and stories,documentaries encourage us to think about interesting issues we wouldn't necessarily know about.
So,what makes a good documentary, and what should we pay attention to when we watch one? Here,we offer a few easy strategies to help you get the most out of watching documentaries.

Think critically
Listen to what the people in the documentary are saying and ask yourself the following questions:If you were debating with someone or introducing a new concept, would you say the things the people in the documentary are saying?Do the arguments make sense?
Check the sources
If you're sitting at the computer and can't think of anything to do,why not look up the points the documentary made and see if they are accurate? You could even read more about what is presented in the documentary.
Who are the creators?
The creators or financial backers of a film will usually be involved with how the subject matter is presented.For instance,as the documentary 2016:Obama's America was directed in large part by a conservative writer,it's not surprising that it's critical of President Obama from the beginning.

A.non-fictional
B.controversial

3.BEIJING changed the office hours of many institutions starting April 12 in the hope of reducing traffic jams during rush hour.
The new policy asked 800,000 employees to replace their former working schedule of 8:30 am to 5:30 pm with the new working hours of 9 am to 6 pm.
This is just one part of the Beijing municipal government's plan to fight traffic jams.Starting April 1,daytime parking fees in 13 downtown areas were raised to encourage less driving. On April 2,the government announced limitations launched after the Beijing Olympics would be extended until April 2012.These ban Beijing's 5.8 million drivers from driving one workday each week. The ban is based on the last number of the car license plate.
A multi-billion yuan fund has also been set up to build more underground ring roads in heavily populated areas.Major roads above ground will also be expanded.
According to Beijing's traffic authorities, key projects include repairing major ring roads and expanding the subway network. The city will also create more taxi stops and bike rental stations, probably under the hundreds of overpasses (天桥) citywide.

17.Daniel Anderson,a famous psychologist,believes it's important to distinguish television's influences on children from those of the family.We tend to blame TV,he says,for problems it doesn't really cause,overlooking our own roles in shaping children's minds.
One traditional belief about television is that it reduces a child's ability to think and to understand the world.While watching TV,children do not merely absorb words and images (影像).Instead,they learn both explicit(明确的) and hidden meanings from what they see.Actually,children learn early the psychology of characters in TV shows.Furthermore,as many teachers agree,children understand far more when parents watch TV with them,explaining new words and ideas.Yet,most parents use an educational program as a chance to park their kids in front of the set and do something in another room.
Another argument against television is that it replaces reading as a form of entertainment.But according to Anderson,the amount of time spent watching television is not related to reading ability.TV doesn't take the place of reading for most children; it takes the place of similar sorts of recreation,such as listening to the radio and playing sports.Things like parents'educational background have a stronger influence on a child's reading."A child's reading ability is best predicted by how much a parent reads."Anderson says.

Traditional wisdom also has it that heavy television-watching lowers IQ (智商) scores and affects school performance.But here,too,Anderson notes that no studies have proved it.In fact,research suggests that it's the other way around."If you're smart young,you'll watch less TV when you're older,"Anderson says.Yet,people of lower IQ tend to be lifelong television viewers.
For years researchers have attempted to show that television is dangerous to children.However,by showing that television promotes none of the dangerous effects as conventionally(传统地) believed,Anderson suggests that television cannot be condemned without considering other influences.

A.Radio-listening
B.Television-watching
C.Parents'reading list
D.Parents'educational background
59.Anderson believed thatC.
A.the more a child watches TV,the smarter he is
B.the younger a child is,the more he watches TV
C.the smarter a child is,the less likely he gets addicted to TV
D.the less a child watches TV,the better he performs at school
60.What is the main purpose of the passage?D
A.To advise on the educational use of TV.
